Chapter 3: The Truth Nobody Expected
The sentence stayed in my mind like a scream.
Once Daniel marries me, his mother will no longer be a problem.
I read it again.
And again.
The words didn’t change.
Claire was standing ten feet away, but suddenly she felt like a stranger.
“Daniel,” she whispered.
I looked up.
“Did you write this?””
She didn’t answer immediately.
That was enough.
My father stepped beside me.
“Everyone deserves the truth.””
Claire looked around the room.
“Do you have any idea what you’re doing?””
My father’s expression hardened.
“Yes. I’m stopping my son from making a mistake.””
She laughed bitterly.
“You think you know everything.””
“No,” my father said.
“But I know enough.””
I looked back at the letter.
The handwriting continued.
“Dad, Daniel still thinks this marriage is about love. He doesn’t understand that his family has always held him back.””
My chest tightened.
Held him back?
My mother had worked two jobs when I was a child.
My father had repaired old cars every weekend to pay for my college.
They weren’t holding me back.
They were the reason I moved forward.
Claire walked toward me.
“Daniel, listen to me.””
I didn’t move.
“Tell me this isn’t true.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I was angry.””
“That’s not an answer.””
She looked down.
“I felt like your family controlled you.””
“My family?””
“Yes.””
She pointed toward my mother.
“Your mother always made you feel responsible for her.””
My mother looked hurt.
“I asked my son for love, not control.””
Claire ignored her.
“I wanted us to start our own life.””
I held up the letter.
“By removing my family?””
She didn’t respond.
That silence answered everything.
Marcus opened another file.
“There’s more.””
I looked at him.
“How much more?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“Claire’s father contacted my firm two months ago.””
My eyebrows tightened.
“Why?””
“To discuss protecting certain assets after the marriage.””
My stomach dropped.
“What assets?””
Marcus looked at Claire.
“Daniel’s inheritance.””
The room went completely still.
I turned toward Claire.
“My inheritance?””
She quickly shook her head.
“That wasn’t my idea.””
“Then whose idea was it?””
She looked away.
My father closed his eyes.
“I knew something was wrong when Claire kept asking questions about your grandfather’s trust.””
I remembered.
The late-night conversations.
The questions about my family.
The sudden interest in my financial future.
I had mistaken it for planning our life together.
Maybe it was planning her life.
Claire started crying.
“I loved you.””
I looked at her.
For a moment, I wanted to believe her.
Because love was easier than betrayal.
But then I remembered my mother standing in the rain.
I remembered the fake message.
The missing invitation.
The lies.
“Love doesn’t hide my mother from my wedding.””
She covered her face.
The guests slowly began leaving.
The beautiful ceremony we planned was gone.
But strangely, I didn’t feel destroyed.
I felt awake.
My mother walked toward me.
“I’m sorry this happened today.””
I hugged her.
“No, Mom.””
My voice broke.
“I’m sorry I didn’t believe you.””
She held me tightly.
My father stood beside us quietly.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He didn’t answer.
He looked at Claire.
Then at me.
“Daniel… there’s one more person who needs to speak.””
The ballroom doors opened again.
A woman in her sixties walked inside carrying a small box.
Claire immediately froze.
“Grandma?””
The woman looked directly at me.
“I’m sorry, Daniel.””
She placed the box on the table.
“Your wedding was supposed to reveal the truth about Claire.””
I stared at the box.
“Who are you?””
The woman opened the lid.
Inside was a photograph.
A photograph of Claire.
And another man.
A man I had never seen before.
May you like
The woman whispered:
“Because that man was the reason Claire chose you in the first place.””
