Chapter 5: The Man Claire Was Running From

I couldn’t breathe.

The words blurred in front of my eyes.

I had spent two years believing Claire was my future.

My wife.

The mother of my children.

The person I would grow old beside.

But now I was holding proof that I had never been her destination.

I had been her escape route.

“Daniel,” Claire whispered.

I lowered the letter.

“Finish the sentence.””

She looked away.

“Please.””

“No.””

My voice surprised even me.

“No more please. No more secrets.””

My father placed a hand on my shoulder.

“Read it.””

So I did.

The letter continued.

“I was never supposed to marry Daniel Evans. I was supposed to marry Michael because Michael was easier to control.””

My jaw tightened.

“But Michael started asking questions. He started noticing things. Daniel was different. Daniel trusted people.””

I stopped reading.

Trusted people.

That was what she saw in me.

Not kindness.

Weakness.

Claire stepped forward.

“That was years ago.””

I looked at her.

“You wrote this before you met me.””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

“Then why did you choose me?””

She swallowed.

“Because I thought you were different.””

I laughed once.

A painful sound.

“Different how?””

She didn’t answer.

My mother did.

“Because he loved you.””

Claire looked at her.

And that was when I realized something.

My mother wasn’t angry anymore.

She was disappointed.

The kind of disappointment only comes from watching someone hurt the person you love.

Evelyn took a seat.

“I tried to stop this wedding.””

I looked at her.

“How?””

She pointed toward the box.

“I sent letters.””

My father frowned.

“To Daniel?””

“No.””

She looked at me.

“To Claire.””

Everyone stared.

“She ignored them.””

Claire crossed her arms.

“Because you were judging me.””

Evelyn shook her head.

“Because I knew you.””

A phone suddenly rang.

Everyone turned.

It was Marcus.

He looked at the screen.

Then his face changed.

“What?””

I watched him answer.

“Yes, I’m here.””

A pause.

Then:

“Are you sure?””

My father looked concerned.

“What happened?””

Marcus ended the call slowly.

“The man in the photograph.””

My eyes moved to the picture.

“Michael?””

Marcus nodded.

“He’s alive.””

Claire froze.

“What?””

The entire room changed.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I knew this day would come.””

I looked at Claire.

“You thought he was dead?””

She didn’t respond.

That was enough.

Marcus opened his folder.

“He contacted my firm this morning.””

“Why?””

Marcus looked directly at me.

“Because he heard about your wedding.””

Claire’s face went pale.

“What did he say?””

Marcus hesitated.

“He said Claire knows exactly why he disappeared.””

Nobody spoke.

The ballroom felt colder.

My father stepped closer.

“Where is he?””

Marcus checked his phone.

“He’s outside.””

Claire immediately moved.

“No.””

It was barely a whisper.

But everyone heard it.

I stared at her.

“You don’t want him here.””

She looked at me.

“Daniel, you don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

She shook her head.

“I can’t.””

The doors opened.

A man stood outside.

Older than the photograph.

Tired.

Broken.

But alive.

He looked into the ballroom.

His eyes landed on Claire.

Then on me.

And he said:

“I’m sorry I’m late.””

Claire started crying.

“Michael…”

He stepped inside.

“I came because Daniel deserves to know the truth.””

I watched Claire’s face.

She wasn’t afraid of losing me anymore.

She was afraid of what Michael would say.

The man walked toward us slowly.

Then he pulled a small envelope from his jacket.

“I kept this because I hoped she would change.””

He handed it to me.

“What is it?””

Michael looked at Claire.

“The original agreement Claire made before she ever met you.””

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a contract.

And at the bottom was a line that made my hands go numb.

A payment amount.

A signature.

May you like

And one name beside it.

Claire’s father.
