Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Invitation

The ballroom no longer felt like a place where two people promised forever.

It felt like a courtroom.

Every chair, every flower, every candle suddenly looked like evidence.

The man introduced himself as Marcus, a legal assistant from a firm in the city. He looked uncomfortable, like he wished he had never walked through those doors.

Claire stepped toward him.

“You weren’t supposed to come here.””

Marcus swallowed.

“I know.””

“Then leave.””

He looked at me.

“I can’t.””

My father held the folder.

“What’s inside?””

Marcus hesitated.

“Documents.””

Claire’s voice became sharper.

“Daniel, don’t listen to strangers who show up at your wedding.””

I stared at her.

“Then explain why he’s here.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

That silence hurt more than any confession could have.

My mother sat down at a nearby table. Her hands were shaking.

“I never wanted this day ruined for you, Daniel.””

I looked at her.

“Mom, what happened?””

She looked down.

“I received a message three weeks ago.””

“What message?””

She reached into her purse and pulled out her phone.

She showed me a text.

It was from Claire’s number.

The message was short.

“Daniel doesn’t want you involved anymore. Please respect his wishes.””

I felt like someone had punched the air out of my lungs.

“I never sent this.””

Claire immediately spoke.

“She’s lying.””

My mother looked at her.

“Then why did the message come from your phone number?””

Claire crossed her arms.

“Someone could have hacked it.””

Marcus quietly cleared his throat.

“Actually, we checked.””

Everyone turned.

Claire glared at him.

“What did you check?””

Marcus opened the folder.

“The message was sent from Claire’s device.””

The room erupted with whispers.

I looked at Claire.

“Why?””

She shook her head.

“You’re really going to believe them over me?””

I remembered every conversation.

Every time Claire sighed when I mentioned my parents.

Every time she said my mother was “too old-fashioned.””

Every time she made me feel selfish for wanting my family close.

My father opened the letter again.

“Daniel, there is one more thing you need to know.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He handed me the paper.

I read the words myself.

“Your son was told that I refused to attend his wedding. I never refused. I begged to come.””

My vision blurred.

My mother had begged?

I looked at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

She wiped her eyes.

“Because every time I called, Claire answered.””

My heart stopped.

“She answered my calls?””

My mother nodded.

“She said you were busy. She said you needed space.””

Claire stepped forward.

“That is not what happened.””

My father looked at her.

“Then tell us what happened.””

She stayed silent.

The worst part wasn’t the accusations.

It was that Claire didn’t look shocked.

She looked caught.

Marcus opened another document.

“Daniel, there’s also something regarding the wedding expenses.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

He handed me a paper.

I read the heading.

A joint financial agreement.

My name.

Claire’s name.

And a third person’s signature.

I looked closer.

My blood ran cold.

“Who is this?””

Marcus hesitated.

“That signature belongs to Claire’s father.””

Claire immediately grabbed the document.

“Stop.””

But it was too late.

I had already seen the date.

The agreement was signed six months before she accepted my proposal.

“Claire,” I whispered.

“Why was your father involved in our finances before we were even engaged?””

She looked away.

My mother stood slowly.

“Daniel, there is something else.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She reached into her coat and pulled out an old envelope.

“I found this under my porch yesterday.””

My father took it.

The handwriting on the front was familiar.

Claire’s handwriting.

My stomach twisted.

“Why do you have a letter written by Claire?””

My mother looked at me with tears in her eyes.

“Because she never meant for you to read it.””

Claire suddenly stepped forward.

“Daniel, don’t open that.””

The entire ballroom went silent.

I stared at the envelope in my father’s hand.

Then I slowly reached for it.

I broke the seal.

Inside was only one page.

And the first sentence made my hands start shaking.

“Dear Dad, once Daniel marries me, his mother will no longer be a problem…”
