Chapter 7: The Secret I Never Told Him

For a moment, neither Daniel nor I moved.

The phone screen went dark.

Megan was gone.

But her last words stayed in the room.

Ask Emily why she never told you what happened the night of your wedding.

My heart started beating faster.

Daniel looked at me.

Not accusing.

Not angry.

Just confused.

“Emily?””

I looked away.

Because suddenly, after everything Megan had done, there was one thing she had managed to do perfectly.

She had found the one secret I had buried.

The one memory I never wanted to revisit.

“Emily,” Daniel said again.

I sat down slowly.

“I didn’t know she knew.””

“Who?””

“Megan.””

He waited.

“What happened that night?””

I stared at my hands.

The wedding rehearsal dinner.

The night before I became his wife.

The night everyone thought I was the happiest woman alive.

But there was one moment I never told anyone about.

Not my parents.

Not my friends.

Not even Daniel.

Because I was ashamed.

“I saw Megan with someone.””

Daniel frowned.

“With who?””

I took a deep breath.

“Your brother.””

His expression changed.

“My brother?””

“Yes.””

Daniel sat across from me.

“What do you mean?””

“I saw them arguing outside the restaurant.””

He looked confused.

“My brother and Megan?””

I nodded.

“At first, I thought they were just having a disagreement.””

I closed my eyes.

“But then I heard my name.””

The memory came back instantly.

The cold air.

The empty parking lot.

Megan’s voice.

“You’re not going to ruin this for me.””

Daniel leaned forward.

“What did she mean?””

“I didn’t know.””

I looked at him.

“That was the problem.””

The night before our wedding, I had been looking for Megan.

She had disappeared during dinner.

Everyone assumed she was overwhelmed.

I assumed she was emotional because her best friend was getting married.

I found her near the back entrance.

But she wasn’t alone.

She was standing with Daniel’s older brother, Michael.

They were arguing.

“You need to stay away from him,” Michael had said.

Megan laughed.

“You don’t get to tell me what to do.””

“I know what you’re trying to do.””

“And what exactly is that?””

“Destroy their wedding.””

Those words had stopped me.

I should have walked closer.

I should have asked questions.

But then Megan saw me.

Her face changed immediately.

The anger disappeared.

The tears appeared.

Like flipping a switch.

“Emily?””

I remember how quickly she ran toward me.

How she grabbed my hands.

How she told me she was just upset.

“I’m sorry,” she whispered.

“I’m happy for you. I swear.””

And I believed her.

Because I loved her.

Because I trusted her.

Because I wanted to believe my best friend could never hurt me.

“So why didn’t you tell me?”” Daniel asked quietly.

I looked at him.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“That I misunderstood.””

He looked hurt.

“You thought I wouldn’t believe you?””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“I thought I wouldn’t believe myself.””

The room became silent.

Daniel leaned back.

“Why would Michael be involved?””

“I don’t know.””

I grabbed my phone.

“I never told anyone. I didn’t even take a picture.””

“Emily.””

“I know.””

I felt tears forming.

“I should have said something.””

Daniel reached toward me.

This time, I let him hold my hand.

“You didn’t know.””

“But I knew something was wrong.””

He squeezed my fingers.

“And Megan knew that.””

I looked up.

“What?””

“She knew you saw.””

My stomach tightened.

“She knew?””

“Yes.””

Daniel’s face changed as he realized something.

“That’s why she’s bringing it up.””

“To scare me?””

“No.””

He shook his head.

“To distract you.””

I thought about that.

Megan always did that.

Whenever someone got close to the truth, she created a bigger emotion.

Anger.

Drama.

Confusion.

Anything to stop people from looking directly at her.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Michael.

*We need to talk.*

I stared at the screen.

Daniel saw it.

“What does he want?””

“I don’t know.””

“Don’t answer.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

“Because everyone connected to Megan has been hiding something.””

The message came again.

*Please. This is about your wedding night.*

I hesitated.

Then I replied.

*Where?*

Daniel looked at me.

“Are you sure?””

“No.””

I stood up.

“But I’m done being afraid of secrets.””

An hour later, I met Michael in a quiet parking lot.

The same place where I had seen him and Megan years ago.

He looked older.

Tired.

Like he had been carrying guilt for too long.

“I’m sorry,” he said immediately.

I crossed my arms.

“For what?””

“For not telling you.””

“About what?””

He looked away.

“Megan came to me because she wanted help.””

“Help doing what?””

His jaw tightened.

“Getting Daniel away from you.””

I already knew.

But hearing it still hurt.

“How?””

“She wanted me to convince Daniel that he wasn’t ready for marriage.””

I stared at him.

“And you agreed?””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“I refused.””

“Then why hide it?””

“Because Megan begged me not to expose her.””

I laughed bitterly.

“Everyone protected her.””

Michael looked ashamed.

“You don’t understand.””

“Then explain.””

He took a breath.

“Megan wasn’t just interested in Daniel.””

I waited.

“She was obsessed.””

The word hung in the air.

“She kept a notebook.””

I frowned.

“A notebook?””

“Yes.””

“What was in it?””

Michael looked at me.

“Things about your relationship.””

My blood ran cold.

“What things?””

He hesitated.

“Dates. Arguments. Things Daniel liked. Things you didn’t notice.””

I felt sick.

“She was studying us?””

“Yes.””

The parking lot suddenly felt unsafe.

“She wasn’t trying to become his friend.””

Michael shook his head.

“She was trying to become the person he needed.””

Then he said something that made my entire body go cold.

“She had a plan.””

“What plan?””

Michael looked directly into my eyes.

“She told me if she couldn’t have Daniel before the wedding, she would wait until after.””

My phone buzzed.

Another message.

This time from Megan.

*You’re asking the wrong people.*

A second message appeared.

*You still don’t know the biggest secret.*

I looked up.

Michael had seen the messages.

His face went pale.

“Emily.””

“What?””

He whispered:

“She found out.””

“Found out what?””

May you like

He looked terrified.

“That I told you.””
