Chapter 5: The Friend Who Knew Too Much

Ryan asked me to meet him that afternoon.

Not at a restaurant.

Not somewhere public.

He chose a quiet park near the edge of town.

Somewhere with empty benches and enough distance from other people.

When I arrived, he was already there.

He looked different from the night before.

Less like a tired husband.

More like someone who had finally decided to stop carrying a secret.

“Thank you for coming,” he said.

I sat across from him.

“I almost didn’t.””

“I understand.””

“No, I don’t think you do.””

Ryan looked down.

“I probably don’t.””

I studied his face.

He wasn’t defending Megan.

He wasn’t making excuses.

That was unexpected.

“How long have you known?””

He rubbed his hands together.

“About Megan?””

“Yes.””

“Years.””

The answer hurt.

“Years?””

He nodded.

“She has always needed to be the person everyone chooses.””

I looked away.

“She was my best friend.””

“I know.””

“No. You don’t.””

Ryan looked at me.

“I know because I watched her do the same thing to other people.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Other people?””

“Yes.””

“Who?””

He sighed.

“Friends. Coworkers. Even family members.””

I waited.

“She doesn’t always do something obvious.””

“What do you mean?””

“She doesn’t walk in and say, ‘I want your life.’”

He looked toward the trees.

“She makes people feel special first.””

That sentence stayed with me.

Because it was true.

Megan had always been good at that.

She remembered birthdays.

She sent thoughtful messages.

She made people feel like they mattered.

Then, slowly, she crossed lines.

“You knew she was interested in Daniel?””

Ryan nodded.

“Yes.””

“How?””

“Because she told me.””

My heart stopped.

“She told you?””

“Not directly.””

“Then how?””

Ryan looked embarrassed.

“Two years ago, we had a fight.””

“About what?””

“About Daniel.””

I stared at him.

“What?””

“She told me I was insecure.””

Ryan gave a humorless smile.

“She said I was imagining things.””

“And you believed her?””

“No.””

His answer was immediate.

“I knew my wife.””

He looked down.

“She said Daniel was different.””

I felt a chill.

“What does that mean?””

“She said he was the kind of man women regret losing.””

My jaw tightened.

“Did she ever say she loved him?””

Ryan looked away.

“Yes.””

The word hit me harder than I expected.

“When?””

“Not directly.””

“Ryan.””

He sighed.

“She said she wished she had met him first.””

I looked at him.

“When did you hear that?””

“The night of your wedding rehearsal.””

Everything inside me went still.

“The same night?””

“Yes.””

I remembered Megan disappearing.

I remembered searching for her.

I remembered finding her crying near the parking lot.

I remembered holding her and asking what was wrong.

She had looked at me and said:

“I’m just overwhelmed.””

I thought she was emotional because my wedding was coming.

I thought she loved me.

I thought she was happy for me.

“She told you?”” I asked.

Ryan nodded.

“She told me she had feelings for Daniel.””

I felt nauseous.

“And you stayed?””

He looked ashamed.

“I thought I could fix it.””

“You thought you could fix your wife wanting someone else?””

“I thought I could make her realize she was wrong.””

“And did she?””

Ryan gave a sad smile.

“No.””

The wind moved through the trees.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Ryan reached into his pocket.

“I have something.””

He handed me his phone.

There was a recording.

My eyes went to him.

“What is this?””

“The reason I called you.””

I pressed play.

At first, there was only background noise.

Then Megan’s voice.

My blood turned cold.

“I’m not saying I want to hurt her.””

A man’s voice responded.

Ryan’s.

“Then what do you want?””

Megan laughed softly.

“I want him to see what life could be like.””

“When?””

“Eventually.””

“That’s insane.””

“No.””

Her voice was calm.

“That’s patience.””

I stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

“You really think Emily won’t notice?””

Megan laughed.

“Emily trusts me more than anyone.””

A pause.

“She’ll defend me even when I’m standing right in front of her taking something.””

I lowered the phone.

I couldn’t listen anymore.

“When was this recorded?””

Ryan looked away.

“The week before your wedding.””

I stared at him.

“You had this for years?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His eyes filled with regret.

“Because I was afraid.””

“Of her?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

He swallowed.

“Because I knew if I exposed her, she would destroy everything around her.””

I thought about Megan’s messages.

The accusations.

The way she made herself the victim.

Ryan was right.

She didn’t just cross boundaries.

She controlled the story afterward.

I handed the phone back.

“What happened after the wedding?””

Ryan looked at me.

“You really don’t know?””

“No.””

He took a deep breath.

“The night you and Daniel left for your honeymoon, Megan sent him a message.””

My heart started racing.

“What message?””

Ryan looked at me.

“She congratulated him.””

“That’s it?””

“No.””

He paused.

“Then she wrote…”

He pulled out his own phone.

“I saved this too.””

He showed me the message.

My eyes moved across the screen.

*I hope someday you realize the person who understands you was standing beside you the whole time.*

I felt sick.

Then another message appeared.

*I’m not giving up.*

I looked up.

“She sent that after my wedding?””

Ryan nodded.

“And Emily?””

I looked at him.

“What?””

His face was serious.

“She didn’t stop after that.””

The park suddenly felt too quiet.

“What else did she do?””

Ryan looked at me.

“She has been waiting for one thing.””

“What?””

“For you and Daniel to have a problem.””

My phone buzzed.

A message.

From Daniel.

*Emily, call me. It’s urgent.*

Then another message appeared.

*Megan just showed up at our house.*

I stood up immediately.

“What happened?””

Ryan’s expression changed.

“She knows we talked.””

My blood ran cold.

“How?””

May you like

He looked at my phone.

“Because Megan always knows when people stop following her rules.””
