Chapter 4: The Night She Tried to Stop My Wedding
I didn’t speak for several seconds.
The noise around me disappeared.
Cars passed on the street. People laughed outside the coffee shop. A woman nearby dropped a spoon onto a table.
But all I heard was Daniel’s voice.
“She tried to stop our wedding.””
I gripped my phone tighter.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel exhaled slowly.
“I should have told you years ago.””
“That sentence keeps getting worse every time you say it.””
“I know.””
“Daniel, tell me the truth.””
There was a long silence.
Then he said, “The night before our wedding, Megan came to my hotel room.””
My heart sank.
The world suddenly felt colder.
“She came to your hotel room?””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“I didn’t know at first.””
I closed my eyes.
I wanted to believe there was some innocent explanation.
But I already knew better.
“She told me she needed to talk.””
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“She said you were making a mistake.””
I swallowed.
“She said what?””
“She said you were rushing into marriage. That you were too emotional. That maybe you didn’t really know what you wanted.””
My fingers tightened around the phone.
“And you believed her?””
“No.””
His answer came immediately.
“I didn’t.””
I looked down at the sidewalk.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because she made it sound like she was worried about you.””
I laughed bitterly.
“She was never worried about me.””
“I know that now.””
I walked toward my car but didn’t get inside.
“What else did she say?””
Daniel hesitated.
And that hesitation hurt.
“There’s more.””
I closed my eyes.
“Of course there is.””
“She said…”
He stopped.
“Say it.””
“She said if you and I were meant to be together, I wouldn’t have doubts.””
I frowned.
“That doesn’t even make sense.””
“I know.””
“What else?””
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“She asked me if I ever wondered what it would be like to be with someone who already understood me.””
My stomach twisted.
“Someone like her?””
“Yes.””
I leaned against the car door.
For years, I had thought Megan was simply outgoing.
Friendly.
Maybe too comfortable sometimes.
But this wasn’t friendliness.
This was someone slowly trying to create a space for herself inside my marriage.
“Did she touch you?””
Daniel went silent.
That was enough.
“Daniel.””
“No.””
The word came quickly.
“No. She tried.””
“Tried?””
“She hugged me.””
I felt a sharp pain in my chest.
“A hug?””
“It wasn’t normal.””
“What happened?””
“I stepped away.””
“And then?””
“She got angry.””
“Angry?””
“Yes.””
Daniel took a breath.
“She said, ‘You’re going to regret choosing her over someone who actually sees you.’”
I stared at the ground.
The sentence felt like a knife.
Not because Megan had said it.
Because Daniel had carried it alone for years.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
“That you would think I had encouraged it.””
I didn’t answer.
Because part of me understood.
And part of me was furious.
“You made a decision for me.””
“I know.””
“You protected her secret instead of protecting our marriage.””
“I know.””
His voice cracked.
“I’m sorry.””
I sat in my car.
For several minutes, neither of us spoke.
Then Daniel said something that changed the entire situation.
“There’s something else.””
I almost laughed.
“Another thing?””
“I found out later that Ryan knew.””
“Megan’s husband?””
“Yes.””
“How?””
“He confronted her after the rehearsal dinner.””
I sat up.
“What?””
“After she came back from trying to talk to me, Ryan noticed something was wrong.””
“And?””
“Apparently, it wasn’t the first time.””
The silence between us grew.
“What do you mean?””
Daniel sighed.
“Ryan told me last night.””
My hand froze.
“He talked to you?””
“After you went inside.””
“When?””
“When you were speaking with Claire.””
I remembered Ryan’s exhausted expression.
The way he looked at Megan.
Like he had been carrying a secret too.
“What did he say?””
Daniel answered carefully.
“He said Megan had a pattern.””
“A pattern of what?””
“Getting close to people’s relationships.””
I felt sick.
“Why would he stay?””
“I don’t know.””
I looked through my windshield.
The street was moving normally.
People were living normal lives.
And I was sitting there realizing my best friend had been trying to replace me in my own marriage.
“Where is she now?”” I asked.
“Megan?””
“Yes.””
“I don’t know.””
I ended the call.
Then I sat there.
Thinking about every moment.
Every birthday.
Every holiday.
Every time Megan had looked at Daniel.
Every time she had called him funny.
Every time she had said, “You’re lucky.””
Maybe she didn’t mean me.
Maybe she never had.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Claire.
*I found something. You need to see this.*
Attached was a photo.
I opened it.
My breath caught.
It was a screenshot of a conversation.
Between Megan and someone else.
The first message was from Megan.
*I know he loves her, but love isn’t everything. People change.*
The reply was from another number.
*You really think you can replace her?*
Megan responded:
*I don’t need to replace her. I just need him to realize what he’s missing.*
My hands started shaking.
Then Claire sent another message.
*There’s more. Look at the date.*
I looked.
The date was six months before my wedding.
Before I married Daniel.
Before Megan stood beside me in my wedding dress.
Before she smiled and called me her sister.
And underneath the screenshot was one final message.
*I think tonight will be the night he finally sees me.*
I stared at the words.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
“Hello?””
A man’s voice spoke.
“Is this Emily?””
“Yes.””
“This is Ryan.””
I sat up.
“What happened?””
His voice was quiet.
“I need to tell you the truth about my wife.””
May you like
A pause.
“And I think you’re going to want to hear what she did after your wedding.””
