Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Smile

Claire had always been the quietest person in our friend group.

She wasn’t someone who exaggerated.

She wasn’t someone who created drama.

That was why the fear in her eyes scared me more than Megan’s anger.

“What did she say?”” I asked again.

Claire looked toward the restaurant window.

Inside, Megan was still talking, but she wasn’t laughing anymore.

“She said…” Claire paused.

Her voice dropped.

“She said, ‘Let’s see how long it takes her to notice.’”

I felt like the ground moved beneath me.

“What?””

Claire nodded.

“I thought I misunderstood her. I hoped I misunderstood her.””

Daniel looked away.

His jaw tightened.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Claire looked at him.

“Because I didn’t know what was happening. I thought maybe it was some stupid joke between friends.””

I laughed once.

But there was no humor in it.

“A joke.””

The word felt disgusting now.

A joke was supposed to make people laugh.

Not make someone question twelve years of friendship.

Daniel stepped closer.

“I should have told you about the messages.””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

The honesty almost hurt more.

I wanted him to deny it.

I wanted him to say Megan was lying.

I wanted the easy version of the night.

But there was no easy version anymore.

“When did she start acting like this?”” I asked.

Daniel looked back at the restaurant.

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not true.””

He closed his eyes.

After a moment, he said quietly, “The first time I noticed was at our anniversary dinner.””

I remembered that night.

Three months earlier.

Megan had joined us because she said she was nearby.

She sat across from us and spent most of the evening complimenting Daniel.

“You’re lucky,” she had told him.

I had laughed.

“She tells me that all the time.””

But now, remembering it, I heard the difference.

It wasn’t friendly.

It was personal.

Daniel continued.

“She kept asking questions about us.””

“Like what?””

He swallowed.

“She asked if we were still happy.””

I frowned.

“That’s normal.””

“Not the way she asked.””

The restaurant door opened.

A waiter stepped outside and quietly told us our table was ready to leave whenever we were.

None of us moved.

Daniel continued.

“She asked me if I ever wondered what life would be like with someone who understood me better.””

My heart sank.

“And what did you say?””

“I told her that was inappropriate.””

I looked at him.

“You never told me.””

“I thought it would only hurt you.””

I shook my head.

“That decision wasn’t yours to make.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

The three of us stood outside in silence.

The streetlights reflected off the wet pavement.

Inside the restaurant, people were slowly finishing their conversations, pretending everything was normal.

But my world had changed in less than ten minutes.

Claire reached into her purse.

“I have something else.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

She pulled out her phone.

“I saved the message because I thought something felt wrong.””

She unlocked the screen.

“I received this from Megan last month.””

I read it.

At first, I didn’t understand.

Then I did.

The message was about me.

*Some people stay in marriages because they are afraid to start over.*

I looked up.

“What is this?””

Claire looked uncomfortable.

“She sent it after you told us about your argument with Daniel.””

My fingers tightened around my phone.

“She was talking about my marriage?””

Claire nodded.

“She said you were lucky to have him because another woman would appreciate him more.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

Not because they were insulting.

Because they revealed something.

Megan wasn’t just crossing boundaries.

She was waiting.

Waiting for a weakness.

Waiting for an opportunity.

I turned toward Daniel.

“Did she ever say anything like this to you?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That was enough.

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

“Yes.””

The pain in his voice was immediate.

“She said she thought you didn’t appreciate me.””

I stared at him.

“And you listened?””

“No.””

“Then why didn’t you tell me?””

“Because I thought telling you would make you hate her.””

I almost laughed.

“She did that herself.””

The restaurant door opened again.

This time, it was Ryan.

Megan’s husband.

He stepped outside slowly.

His face looked exhausted.

Not angry.

Just exhausted.

“Can I talk to you?””

I looked at him.

“About what?””

Ryan glanced at Claire and Daniel.

Then back at me.

“About Megan.””

Nobody spoke.

Finally, I nodded.

Ryan took a deep breath.

“She has done this before.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

He looked down.

“Not with Daniel.””

A pause.

“With other people.””

The silence was heavy.

“What do you mean?””

Ryan rubbed his hands together.

“Megan likes attention. She always has.””

“That’s not enough to explain tonight.””

“No,” he said.

His voice cracked slightly.

“It isn’t.””

He looked through the window at his wife.

“She doesn’t want your husband.””

I frowned.

“Then what does she want?””

Ryan looked at me.

And his answer made my blood run cold.

“She wants to prove she can take anything that belongs to someone else.””

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because suddenly, the night wasn’t about a bad joke.

It was about something much darker.

I looked back through the window.

Megan was watching us.

And when our eyes met, she didn’t look guilty.

She looked angry.

Like she was the one who had been betrayed.

Then my phone buzzed again.

Another message.

This time, from an unknown number.

I opened it.

There was only one sentence.

*Ask Megan what happened the night of your wedding rehearsal.*

My breath caught.

Because I remembered that night.

The night Megan disappeared for twenty minutes.

The night she came back crying.

The night she refused to tell me what was wrong.

I looked at Daniel.

He had seen my face change.

“What is it?””

I slowly turned my phone toward him.

And for the first time that night, Daniel looked genuinely afraid.

“Who sent that?”” he whispered.

I looked back at the message.

Then at the restaurant window.

Megan was still staring at me.

Like she knew a secret I didn’t.

May you like

And I suddenly realized something terrifying.

The woman who claimed to be my best friend had been hiding something from me since the day I got married.
