Chapter 2: The Secret Inside The Paper
The first thing I saw inside the envelope was a photograph.
Not a letter.
Not an explanation.
A photograph.
My hands went numb.
It was a picture of Nia and Andre sitting together at a restaurant.
At first, I didn’t understand why my mother would give me something so ordinary.
Then I noticed the date.
Three months earlier.
The same week Nia told me she had been visiting her sick aunt.
I looked at the picture again.
They weren’t sitting like friends.
Andre’s hand was resting over hers.
And Nia was smiling at him in a way I hadn’t seen in years.
A way she used to smile at me.
The crowd around us disappeared.
The wedding decorations.
The guests.
The flowers scattered across the ground.
Everything became background noise.
“Marcus,” Nia said softly.
I looked up.
Her face was pale.
“It’s not what you think.””
That sentence.
Those five words.
I had heard them before.
Usually right before someone explained something that was exactly what I thought.
I held up the photograph.
“Then explain it.””
Nia glanced at Andre.
That was all I needed to see.
The hesitation.
The fear.
The silent conversation between them.
Andre stepped forward.
“Marcus, you’re making this worse.””
I laughed once.
A short, empty sound.
“I’m making this worse?””
He looked uncomfortable.
“Yes.””
I turned toward him.
“You just said if I opened the envelope, you’d both be finished.””
The guests murmured.
Somebody behind me whispered, “Wait…”
Andre’s face changed.
Just slightly.
But enough.
My mother noticed too.
She always noticed everything.
“Nia,” she said, “tell him the truth.””
Nia’s eyes filled with tears.
But I couldn’t tell if they were tears of guilt or frustration.
“You have no idea what your mother has been doing,” Nia said.
I looked at my mother.
“What does she mean?””
My mother didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she reached into the envelope and handed me another piece of paper.
This time, it was a printed email.
The sender’s name caught my attention.
Nia.
The recipient?
Andre.
My heart sank before I even read the first line.
I forced myself to continue.
He still believes everything I tell him.
I stopped breathing.
The email continued.
I just need more time before the wedding. Once we are married, it will be harder for him to leave.
My hands shook.
“No,” Nia whispered.
I looked at her.
“Did you write this?””
She stepped closer.
“Marcus, listen to me.””
“Did you?””
Silence.
That was the answer.
My mother looked away.
I had spent months defending Nia.
Whenever my mother questioned her, I said she was being unfair.
Whenever my friends mentioned how distant Nia seemed, I told them they didn’t understand her.
I had built an entire story in my head.
And now that story was collapsing.
Nia reached for my arm.
“Marcus, I can explain.””
I moved away.
The hurt on her face almost convinced me.
Almost.
Then Andre spoke.
“We need to leave.””
I turned toward him.
“We?””
Nia looked at him quickly.
“Don’t.””
But Andre had already said too much.
He ran a hand through his hair.
“This was never supposed to happen today.””
My chest tightened.
“What wasn’t?””
Nobody answered.
The guests watched us like they were watching a movie they couldn’t turn off.
My best friend Daniel, who had been standing near the chairs, finally walked over.
“Marcus,” he said quietly, “you need to hear the rest.””
I looked at him.
“The rest?””
He nodded.
“There’s more.””
My mother closed her eyes.
“I didn’t want to hurt you on your wedding day.””
I stared at the envelope.
“What else is in there?””
My mother hesitated.
Then she said the one sentence that made my blood run cold.
“Proof that Nia didn’t just lie to you about Andre.””
A silence fell.
“What does that mean?””
My mother looked directly at me.
“It means she lied about why she wanted to marry you.””
Nia suddenly moved forward.
“Stop.””
Her voice wasn’t angry anymore.
It was desperate.
“Marcus, don’t listen to her.””
I looked at my bride.
The woman I was supposed to marry in minutes.
“Why?””
Her lips trembled.
“Because if you know the truth, everything changes.””
I held the envelope tighter.
“What truth?””
Nia looked at Andre.
Andre looked at the ground.
And then my mother pulled out one final document.
A document with a name at the top.
My name.
May you like
And underneath it was a sentence that made my entire body go cold.
