Chapter 18: The Confession In The Empty House

The address was not my mother’s house.

It was my childhood home.

The first house I ever lived in.

The place where my father taught me to ride a bicycle.

The place where my family looked perfect.

Until now.

I arrived just before midnight.

The house stood empty.

Dark windows.

Silent rooms.

A ghost of a life I thought I understood.

My mother was inside.

Sitting in the living room.

She looked older than she had that morning.

Much older.

“Marcus.””

I didn’t sit.

“What did you do?””

She looked at the floor.

“I made a mistake.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

She wiped her eyes.

“It’s not.””

I waited.

Finally, she said:

“After your father disappeared, I helped him.””

I frowned.

“You helped him?””

“Yes.””

“Disappear?””

She nodded.

My anger returned.

“You let me believe he died.””

“I did.””

“Why?””

“Because he asked me.””

I shook my head.

“You always say that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then why did you sound guilty?””

She looked toward the old staircase.

“Because I made a choice.””

“What choice?””

She took a breath.

“Your father wanted to expose the person responsible. But he needed time.””

“For what?””

“To find proof.””

“And?””

“And he needed someone close to the person to help him.””

I felt a chill.

“Who?””

My mother looked at me.

“Me.””

I froze.

“You were working with Dad?””

“Yes.””

“Against who?””

She hesitated.

“Against Thomas.””

My biological father.

I stepped back.

“That makes no sense.””

“Thomas wasn’t the enemy when we started.””

“Then what happened?””

My mother’s eyes filled with tears.

“He discovered the account.””

“The founder’s account.””

“Yes.””

“And he wanted it?””

She nodded slowly.

“He believed it should belong to you.””

I stared.

“Then why is everyone blaming him?””

“Because someone framed him.””

“Who?””

My mother looked toward the hallway.

The same hallway where I used to run as a child.

Then she whispered:

“Your father’s closest friend.””

My stomach tightened.

“Daniel?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

A silence.

Then:

“Your uncle.””

I frowned.

“I don’t have an uncle.””

My mother looked terrified.

“You do.””

The front door suddenly opened.

We both turned.

A man stepped inside.

Older.

Gray hair.

A familiar face from photographs I had never understood.

My mother stood.

“You shouldn’t be here.””

The man smiled.

“I was wondering when Marcus would finally learn the truth.””

I stared.

“Who are you?””

He looked at me.

Then said:

“I’m your father’s brother.””

My mother whispered:

“Richard.””

May you like

The man smiled.

“And I’m the reason your father disappeared.”” :::
