Chapter 16: The Storage Unit That Changed Everything
The storage unit was located on the edge of the city.
A place nobody would notice.
A place nobody would search.
Which made it the perfect place to hide a secret.
I stood in front of the metal door with the key in my hand.
For fifteen years, I had believed my father was gone.
Now I was standing somewhere he had prepared for me.
Somewhere he wanted me to find.
Daniel stood behind me.
Nia stood beside him.
Nobody spoke.
Because we all understood the same thing.
Whatever was behind that door would change everything again.
I pushed the key into the lock.
The mechanism clicked.
The door rolled upward.
Inside was a small room filled with boxes.
Not money.
Not valuables.
Records.
Photographs.
Tapes.
A lifetime of evidence.
Daniel stepped inside first.
“He knew someone would come after this.””
I followed.
“How?””
“Because your father was never careless.””
I looked around.
My father had planned this.
Every detail.
Every possibility.
There was a wooden box sitting alone on a table.
My name was written on it.
Marcus.
My hands shook as I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
My father’s handwriting.
My chest tightened.
I unfolded it.
*Marcus,*
*If you are reading this, then I failed to tell you the truth myself.*
I stopped.
The words blurred for a moment.
Then I continued.
*First, I need you to know something. I never cared about whether you were my biological son. You were my son because I chose you every day.*
I swallowed hard.
Daniel looked away, giving me privacy.
The letter continued.
*But there is another truth you must know. The person who caused all of this was not trying to destroy me. They were trying to control what I built.*
I looked at the boxes around me.
*The company was never my greatest achievement. My greatest achievement was creating something that could not be controlled by one person.*
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Daniel stepped closer.
The next paragraph made my heart stop.
*The founder’s account was created to prevent corruption. It requires approval from multiple people. But there is one final authority. My child.*
My hands tightened around the paper.
My child.
*The person who controls the account does not inherit wealth. They inherit responsibility.*
I looked up.
“So someone wanted access to this.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
I continued reading.
*If someone tries to force Marcus into activating the account, do not trust them. The account was designed to reveal the person who wants it.*
A cold feeling moved through me.
The wedding.
Nia.
The marriage.
It was never just about money.
My father knew someone would try to get close to me.
The final lines were written differently.
More urgently.
*Marcus, there is one person you must be careful of.*
I stopped.
The name was missing.
The ink had been scratched away.
Someone had removed it.
I looked at Daniel.
“Someone damaged this.””
He nodded.
“They wanted you to find the warning but not the name.””
I searched through the box.
More documents.
More photos.
Then I found a video tape.
A handwritten label.
*For Marcus. Only after the truth begins.*
Daniel found an old player inside another box.
It still worked.
The screen flickered.
Then my father appeared.
Older than I remembered.
Tired.
But alive.
I stopped breathing.
“Marcus.””
His voice.
His actual voice.
Not a recording from years ago.
A message meant for me.
“If you are watching this, then you know something is wrong.””
He looked directly into the camera.
“I wish I could have been there.””
My eyes burned.
“I wish I could have explained everything myself.””
He paused.
“But the person who betrayed me was someone I trusted completely.””
The screen flickered.
My father looked down.
Then said:
“And Marcus, there is something else.””
He leaned closer.
“The person who helped me disappear…”
The video cut.
Static filled the screen.
I stared.
“What happened?””
Daniel checked the equipment.
“The file is damaged.””
“No.””
I hit the table.
“No, it can’t end there.””
Then a sound came from outside.
A car door.
Daniel immediately turned.
“We need to leave.””
I looked toward the entrance.
“How did they find us?””
Nobody answered.
Because we all knew.
May you like
Someone had been waiting for us to find this place.
And they wanted whatever was inside.
