Chapter 14: The Inheritance Nobody Wanted Me To Have
The old company building looked abandoned.
Broken windows.
Faded signs.
A place that once represented my father’s success now looked like a forgotten grave.
Nia stood outside waiting.
When she saw me, her expression changed.
Relief.
Then guilt.
A complicated mixture I no longer knew how to read.
“You came.””
I stayed several feet away.
“You said you found something.””
She nodded.
“I did.””
Daniel stepped beside me.
Nia looked nervous.
“You brought him.””
“Yes.””
She swallowed.
“Good.””
That surprised me.
“You trust Daniel?””
She looked at him.
“More than I trust my own family.””
Nobody said anything after that.
Inside the building, everything smelled old.
Dust.
Paper.
Memories.
Nia led us upstairs.
“My mother used to bring me here when I was young.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
“She said she was showing me where important people worked.””
She stopped.
“But I think she was teaching me something else.””
“What?””
“How power works.””
We entered an office.
A nameplate still sat on the desk.
Thomas Reed.
I froze.
“My biological father worked here?””
Nia nodded.
“Yes.””
Daniel looked around.
“This was his office.””
I walked inside slowly.
The room felt strange.
Like someone had preserved it.
There were files.
Books.
A locked drawer.
Nia pointed.
“That’s what I found.””
Inside the drawer was a small device.
A recording.
I pressed play.
A man’s voice filled the room.
Thomas.
My biological father.
“Evelyn, if you are listening to this, something happened.””
My hands tightened.
“I know Marcus is safe with you.””
A pause.
“But I need you to know the truth.””
Everyone went silent.
Thomas continued.
“I was wrong to trust them.””
A sound of static.
“Your husband was right. The money was never the goal.””
I looked at Daniel.
The same words again.
“The goal was control.””
Thomas’s voice became weaker.
“They need Marcus because he is the only person who can access the account.””
My heart stopped.
“What account?””
The recording continued.
“Not a bank account.””
A pause.
“The founder’s account.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What?””
Thomas said:
“The account that controls ownership of everything your father built.””
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
Then Nia whispered:
“My mother knew.””
I looked at her.
“How?””
“She helped create it.””
Daniel’s face darkened.
“That’s impossible.””
Nia shook her head.
“She was your father’s accountant.””
I looked at the empty office.
“So my inheritance…”
“Was never money,” Daniel said.
I nodded slowly.
“It was control.””
The pieces finally connected.
The trust.
The marriage.
The wedding.
Nia wasn’t just after wealth.
She was after access.
Someone wanted her close enough to unlock something.
My phone buzzed.
A message.
From Victoria.
*You need to leave immediately.*
Then another.
*They know you found the account.*
Then a third.
A photograph.
It showed Daniel standing beside my father.
But the date was after my father’s official death.
I stared at it.
My blood went cold.
Daniel saw the picture.
His face changed.
“Where did you get that?””
“Victoria sent it.””
Daniel stepped back.
Because he knew.
“What is it?””
He looked at me.
And for the first time since I met him…
he looked afraid.
“Marcus.””
May you like
His voice dropped.
“That picture should not exist.””
