Chapter 8: The Confession in the Conference Room
Khalil stared at the document.
Denise's name appeared beneath Claire's signature, followed by a clause appointing her as the temporary custodian of Ariana's inheritance if the trust administrator determined that the assets had been unlawfully accessed.
The clause was clear.
If Khalil was implicated in financial misconduct, Denise would become the temporary custodian until the matter was resolved.
Khalil looked up.
“Why would Claire choose you?””
Denise lowered herself into a chair.
“Because she didn't trust anyone else.””
The words cut deeper than Denise intended.
Khalil pushed the document away.
“You're telling me my wife believed I might steal from my own daughter?””
“No,” Denise said quickly.
“She believed someone might use your identity to make it look as if you had.””
“Who?””
Denise looked toward the door.
Khalil followed her gaze.
Tiffany stood in the doorway.
She had arrived without warning, wearing sunglasses and carrying a leather folder. She removed the glasses slowly, revealing eyes that were red but dry.
“Me, apparently,” she said.
Marcus stood.
“This is a private meeting.””
“I'm Khalil's wife.””
“And this concerns a disputed trust and a potential financial investigation,” Marcus replied.
“You may want independent legal advice before discussing it.””
Tiffany ignored him.
She looked at Denise.
“You finally found the courage to show him the letter?””
Denise's face tightened.
“You knew about the clause.””
“Of course I knew about it. Claire told me she was changing the arrangements.””
“Then why did you pretend you didn't know anything about the trust?””
“Because I knew how it would look!””
Tiffany dropped her folder onto the table.
“I was trying to keep everything from collapsing. My business had failed. Creditors were threatening legal action. I was terrified, and Claire refused to help me.””
Khalil stared at her.
“You forged my signature.””
“I didn't forge anything.””
“The signature on the transfer is not mine.””
“Then perhaps someone else forged it.””
“Who?””
Tiffany looked at Denise.
Denise's hands began trembling.
Marcus stepped between them.
“We're not going to resolve this by trading accusations. Tiffany, if you have documents relevant to the investigation, leave them with me. Otherwise, you need to go.””
Tiffany laughed bitterly.
“You think you can frighten me with legal language?””
“No,” Marcus said.
“I'm advising you not to make your situation worse.””
For a moment, Tiffany looked ready to argue.
Then she opened her folder.
Inside were bank statements, copies of emails, and several pages of handwritten notes.
She slid them across the table.
“Ask Denise about these transfers.””
Khalil looked down.
The documents showed money moving between the shell company and Denise's account over several months. Some transfers were small. Others were large enough to make Khalil's stomach tighten.
“Did you receive this money?”” he asked Denise.
Denise nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because Tiffany said she needed help managing the payments. She told me the money came from a private investment.””
“Did you know it belonged to Ariana's trust?””
Denise looked at her hands.
“Not at first.””
“And afterward?””
She swallowed.
“I knew something was wrong.””
Tiffany folded her arms.
“There. Now you know the truth. Denise helped move the money, and I was the only one trying to prevent a scandal.””
Khalil turned toward her.
“You transferred money out of my daughter's trust and then used Denise as a shield.””
“I never took anything for myself.””
“Where did the money go?””
Tiffany didn't answer.
Marcus examined the statements.
“These records show that a significant portion was transferred to a company connected to Tiffany's former business. We need the underlying bank records before drawing conclusions.””
Tiffany looked at him sharply.
“Those payments were legitimate.””
“Then you should have no difficulty explaining them to investigators.””
Her face hardened.
“You don't understand how these things work.””
Marcus closed the folder.
“I understand that money appears to have moved without proper authorization.””
Tiffany turned toward Khalil.
“You're going to let a stranger destroy our marriage?””
Khalil's voice was quiet.
“You destroyed it when you threatened my daughter.””
“Your daughter has hated me from the beginning!””
“She was a child who lost her mother.””
“And I was a woman trying to build a life with a man who never stopped loving his dead wife!””
The room fell silent.
Tiffany's chest rose and fell rapidly.
Then she looked at Denise.
“You know what the worst part is? I tried to make this work. I tried to give Ariana a normal home. But Claire left her with money, memories, and a father who would always put her first.””
Khalil stood.
“She should come first.””
Tiffany stared at him.
“You can't mean that.””
“I mean that she is my daughter, and I should have protected her. Instead, I let you convince me she was the problem.””
For the first time, Tiffany had no immediate answer.
Denise began to cry again.
“I should have told you sooner, Khalil. I should have gone to the police when Claire died. But Tiffany said if I exposed the transfers, I'd lose everything. She told me the money would be returned before anyone noticed.””
Khalil turned toward her.
“Why didn't you return it all?””
Denise closed her eyes.
“Because I used some of it.””
Tiffany looked at her sharply.
Denise continued before her sister could interrupt.
“I had debts of my own. I told myself I'd repay every cent. I thought if I kept quiet for a few months, I could replace the money and no one would ever know.””
Khalil stared at her in disbelief.
“You helped steal from a child.””
“Yes,” Denise whispered.
“And I've hated myself for it ever since.””
Tiffany shook her head.
“Don't act like a victim now.””
Denise looked up.
“I am not a victim. I am guilty of staying silent, and I'm prepared to face the consequences.””
She reached into her handbag and placed a small digital recorder on the table.
Khalil recognized it as the kind of device used for interviews and meetings.
“What is that?””
“An audio recording.””
Tiffany's face changed.
Denise pressed a button.
At first, there was only a soft rustling sound.
Then Tiffany's voice emerged.
“If Claire won't sign the transfer, we use Khalil's authorization. He signs so many documents he won't notice the difference.””
Khalil went rigid.
Denise's recorded voice followed.
“And if the bank investigates?””
“They won't. By the time anyone notices, the money will be back where it belongs.””
“What if Claire tells him?””
A pause.
Then Tiffany answered.
“She won't get the chance to ruin everything.””
The recording continued for several seconds before ending.
Nobody moved.
Tiffany stared at the device as though it were a living thing.
Khalil slowly turned toward her.
“Where did Denise get that?””
Denise's voice trembled.
“I recorded it during a meeting three years ago. I kept it because I was afraid she'd turn against me.””
Tiffany lunged across the table.
“Give me that!””
Marcus caught the recorder before she could reach it.
“That's enough.””
Tiffany backed away, breathing hard.
“You can't use that. You can't prove when it was recorded.””
“That's for the investigators to determine,” Marcus replied.
Khalil looked at Denise.
“Is there more?””
Denise nodded.
“Yes.””
“Then why haven't you given it to the police?””
“Because I was afraid of what else it would reveal.””
Tiffany let out a short, bitter laugh.
“You stupid woman.””
Denise flinched.
Then she lifted her chin.
“No. I was a coward. There's a difference.””
She turned toward Khalil.
“There's one more thing you need to know about Claire's death. I didn't tell you before because I couldn't prove it, and I was afraid you'd think I was trying to destroy your life.””
Khalil waited.
Denise took a shaky breath.
“The night Claire died, Tiffany called me from the roadside. She said Claire had been in an accident. She asked me to go to the house and remove a folder from Claire's desk before the police arrived.””
Khalil's hands went cold.
“Why?””
“Because the folder contained the original trust documents and a letter Claire had written to you.””
“Did you take it?””
Denise looked down.
“Yes.””
Khalil stood so abruptly that his chair struck the wall.
“You went into my house while my wife was dead, and you stole her letter?””
Denise began sobbing.
“I was terrified. Tiffany said the letter would ruin us both. I thought if I gave her the folder, she'd leave me alone.””
“Where is it now?””
“I kept one copy.””
She reached into her handbag and removed a folded sheet of paper.
Khalil took it with shaking fingers.
Claire's handwriting covered the page.
My darling Khalil,
If you are reading this, then something has happened that I was unable to prevent. I need you to know that I have never doubted your love for Ariana. But I have discovered that someone is using your name to access her inheritance.
I believe I know who is responsible.
Please don't confront them until you have the original records. And whatever happens, do not let Ariana be alone with the person who has threatened me.
Khalil stopped reading.
He looked up at Denise.
“Why didn't you give me this?””
“Because I was afraid.””
“Everyone keeps saying that!””
His voice broke through the room.
“Claire is dead. My daughter has spent years being threatened in her own home. Money was stolen from her future, and every one of you stood by while I buried my wife believing I understood what happened!””
Nobody spoke.
Khalil pressed the letter against the table.
Then he turned toward Tiffany.
“Get out.””
Her eyes widened.
“Khalil—”
“Get out of this room.””
“You can't throw me away because of one recording!””
“This is not one recording. It's years of lies.””
Tiffany's face hardened.
“You'll regret this.””
“Perhaps. But Ariana won't have to live in fear of you anymore.””
Tiffany picked up her handbag and walked toward the door.
At the threshold, she turned back.
“You think you've won because Denise finally found her conscience. You haven't. You still don't know what happened the night Claire died.””
Khalil stared at her.
“What are you hiding?””
Tiffany smiled faintly.
“Ask the person who arrived at the accident scene before the police.””
Then she walked out.
Khalil remained standing long after the door closed.
Marcus was the first to speak.
“We need to preserve every document and recording, and we need to contact the appropriate authorities. We cannot assume that the evidence proves who caused the crash.””
Khalil nodded slowly.
But he could barely hear him.
He was thinking about Claire's final letter.
About the person who had arrived before the police.
And about the fact that his wife had known someone was using his name to steal from their daughter.
He took out his phone and called Ariana.
“Sweetheart, I need you to stay with your uncle for now.””
“What's happened?””
“More of the truth has come out.””
“Is Tiffany going to come here?””
“No,” Khalil said firmly.
“She won't be allowed near you without proper safeguards.””
Ariana was silent for a moment.
Then she asked, “Dad, did Mom know she was going to die?””
Khalil closed his eyes.
“I don't know.””
“Then find out.””
When the call ended, Marcus began gathering the documents.
Denise remained seated, her face buried in her hands.
Khalil looked at her.
“I'm not ready to forgive you.””
“I understand.””
“But if you have anything else, anything at all, you tell the truth now.””
Denise slowly raised her head.
“There is one final recording,” she whispered.
“I didn't make it. Claire did.””
Khalil felt his heart pound.
“Where is it?””
Denise reached into her coat pocket and removed a small memory card.
“Claire gave this to me the afternoon she died.””
May you like
She placed it in Khalil's palm.
“And she told me that if she never made it home, I had to make sure you heard what was on it.””
