Chapter 6: The Evidence Tiffany Couldn't Destroy
Khalil didn't sleep that night.
At two in the morning, he sat alone at the kitchen table with Claire's photograph, the legal agreement, and Denise's phone arranged in front of him.
Ariana had finally fallen asleep upstairs, exhausted from the confrontation. Before closing her bedroom door, she'd asked him one question.
“Dad, if Mom knew Tiffany was dangerous, why didn't she tell you sooner?””
He hadn't known how to answer.
Now he stared at the photograph and wondered how many warning signs he'd missed because he had been too eager to believe that the worst part of his life was already behind him.
The front door opened at six-forty.
Khalil stood abruptly.
Tiffany entered carrying a paper bag from a bakery.
She wore a soft gray sweater and had carefully arranged her hair. If he hadn't heard the recordings, he might have believed she was returning from an ordinary morning walk.
She placed the bag on the counter.
“I bought your favorite pastries.””
Khalil didn't move.
“Where have you been?””
“Getting breakfast.””
“For an hour?””
“I needed some air.””
She removed a pastry from the bag and set it on a plate.
“Can we please stop fighting?””
Khalil looked at her.
“You threatened Claire on the night she died.””
Tiffany's fingers paused over the plate.
“I didn't cause her death.””
“I didn't say you did.””
“But you're thinking it.””
“I'm thinking that you lied to me about everything.””
Tiffany pushed the plate toward him.
“I was afraid you'd misunderstand.””
“Then explain it clearly.””
She sat opposite him.
For a moment, her face looked genuinely tired.
“I was in debt. I was ashamed. I thought Claire could help me, and I believed that if I could access the trust temporarily, I could repay everything before anyone knew.””
“You wanted to use Ariana's money.””
“I intended to repay it.””
“You keep saying that as if it changes what you did.””
Tiffany looked toward the staircase.
“I wanted a life with you, Khalil. I wanted to build a family. But every time I tried to move forward, Claire's memory was there, and Ariana treated me as if I had no right to exist.””
“Claire was alive when you threatened her.””
Tiffany's eyes flashed.
“I was angry. People say things they don't mean.””
“Did you tell her to sign the papers or else?””
“I don't remember my exact words.””
“Denise does.””
“Denise is a coward who waited three years to confess.””
Khalil leaned forward.
“Why did you take Claire's jewelry box?””
Tiffany looked down at her hands.
“I didn't.””
“Then why did you panic when I found the photograph?””
“Because I knew you would accuse me of something.””
“Where is it?””
“I don't know.””
Khalil took out his phone.
“I'll call the police and report the missing property.””
Tiffany's head snapped up.
“You wouldn't dare.””
“Watch me.””
She stood so quickly that her chair scraped across the floor.
“You're going to destroy our marriage over a few old recordings and a story Denise invented?””
“I'm going to find out what happened to Claire.””
“And what happens to me?””
Khalil looked at her.
“That depends on the truth.””
Tiffany stared at him for several seconds, then picked up the bakery bag and threw it into the trash.
“Fine,” she said.
“Investigate. Question everyone. Dig up every painful memory you can find. But when you discover that Claire wasn't the saint you remember, don't come crying to me.””
She walked toward the stairs.
Khalil called after her.
“What does that mean?””
Tiffany stopped.
Then she turned around with a strange, bitter smile.
“Ask Denise why Claire needed so much money in the first place.””
Before he could respond, Tiffany went upstairs.
Khalil immediately called Denise.
She answered on the first ring.
“Did Tiffany leave?””
“No. She's upstairs.””
“Then listen carefully. You need to get Ariana out of that house.””
Khalil's grip tightened around his phone.
“Why?””
“Because Tiffany is going to look for the recordings. She knows Ariana has copies.””
Khalil glanced toward the staircase.
“How do you know?””
“Because she called me twenty minutes ago. She said if I didn't retract everything I told you, she would make sure I lost my job and my home.””
“Did she threaten Ariana?””
“She said Ariana was the only thing standing between her and a future with you.””
Khalil's stomach twisted.
“I'm taking Ariana to my brother's house.””
“Good. But there's something else.””
Denise hesitated.
“I found a document in Claire's old files after the funeral. It was a request for an independent audit of the trust. Claire believed money had already been withdrawn without authorization.””
“Was any money missing?””
“I don't know. The audit never happened. Tiffany told me Claire had canceled it.””
Khalil closed his eyes.
“Send me a copy of that document.””
“I will. But Khalil, you need to understand that Tiffany wasn't the only person who had access to Claire's financial records.””
“Who else?””
Denise's answer was almost inaudible.
“You.””
The call ended.
Khalil remained motionless.
For the first time, he wondered whether Tiffany had been lying about more than her own actions. Had she used his name? Had she forged documents? Had she found a way to make him part of something he didn't understand?
He went upstairs to wake Ariana.
Her bedroom door stood open.
The bed was empty.
Her backpack lay on the floor, its contents scattered across the rug.
Khalil's heart began pounding.
“Ariana?””
He rushed into the room.
A drawer had been pulled out of the dresser. Claire's old books lay in a heap near the closet. The small ceramic bird was broken into three pieces.
Then he noticed the desk.
Ariana's laptop was missing.
So was the flash drive where she'd stored copies of the recordings.
Khalil ran into the hallway.
“Tiffany!””
No answer.
He checked the bathroom, the guest room, and the bedroom at the end of the corridor.
Then he heard a sound from downstairs.
A key turning in the front door.
He raced to the staircase.
Tiffany stood in the foyer, holding Ariana's laptop and the flash drive.
Beside her stood Ariana.
The girl looked frightened but unharmed.
Khalil rushed down.
“What are you doing?””
Tiffany raised one hand.
“Don't make this worse.””
Ariana stepped away from her.
“She said she was taking me to Denise's house. Then she grabbed my laptop.””
“I was protecting this family,” Tiffany replied.
“By stealing my things?”” Ariana asked.
“By stopping you from spreading lies.””
Khalil reached for the laptop.
Tiffany pulled it against her chest.
“Don't touch it!””
“Give it to me.””
“No.””
He held out his hand.
“Tiffany. Now.””
For several seconds, she stood frozen.
Then she threw the laptop onto the floor.
The screen shattered.
Ariana screamed.
Khalil grabbed Tiffany's wrist before she could reach for the flash drive.
“Have you lost your mind?””
Tiffany twisted free.
“You don't understand! If those recordings get out, everything will be ruined!””
Khalil stared at her.
“What recordings?””
Tiffany went silent.
Ariana slowly lifted her phone.
“Dad, I sent the important ones to Denise yesterday. And I sent them to you, too.””
Khalil looked at his phone.
Three new messages had arrived while he was upstairs.
Each contained an audio file.
Tiffany stared at Ariana's screen.
“You little liar.””
Ariana's voice shook, but she didn't step back.
“You taught me that nobody would believe me unless I had proof.””
Khalil moved between them.
“Don't speak to my daughter like that.””
Tiffany looked at him, then at the flash drive in her hand.
Something changed in her expression.
She understood that destroying the laptop hadn't destroyed the evidence.
Her secrets were no longer confined to a bedroom, a kitchen, or a few recordings hidden on a teenager's phone.
They existed in places she couldn't reach.
Khalil took the flash drive from her hand.
Then he called his brother and asked him to come over.
Tiffany sank onto the staircase.
“You're choosing them over me,” she whispered.
Khalil looked at the broken laptop.
“No. I'm choosing to stop pretending.””
Within twenty minutes, his brother arrived and took Ariana to his house. Khalil promised his daughter he would join her as soon as he had secured the remaining documents and contacted a lawyer.
Before leaving, Ariana hugged him tightly.
“Dad, don't let her convince you I'm the problem.””
Khalil held her for a long moment.
“I won't.””
After the car disappeared down the street, he returned to the living room.
Tiffany was standing beside the window.
“You've made your decision,” she said.
“Not yet.””
She laughed bitterly.
“What else do you need? A confession? A courtroom? Shall I kneel and beg?””
Khalil placed the flash drive on the table.
“I need to know why Claire was auditing the trust.””
Tiffany looked away.
He continued.
“And I need to know why Denise thinks my name is on the missing transactions.””
Her face changed.
“What did Denise tell you?””
“That someone used my authorization.””
Tiffany swallowed.
For a moment, he thought she might finally tell him everything.
Instead, she walked to the fireplace and pulled a small envelope from behind a framed photograph.
She held it out to him.
“Before you decide I'm the only person who lied to you,” she said, “you should read this.””
Khalil opened the envelope.
Inside was a copy of a bank transfer bearing his signature.
The amount was $240,000.
The date was three weeks before Claire died.
And the destination account belonged to a company Khalil had never heard of.
He looked up.
“I never authorized this.””
Tiffany's eyes filled with tears.
“I know.””
“Then why do you have it?””
“Because Claire sent me a copy.””
Khalil stared at the document.
“Why would she send it to you?””
Tiffany's voice dropped to a whisper.
“Because she believed you were the one stealing from Ariana's trust.””
Khalil felt the room close around him.
For three years, he'd mourned Claire while believing he understood the circumstances of her death.
Now he was learning that his wife had threatened her, his sister-in-law had hidden evidence, and his daughter's inheritance might have been stolen under his own name.
But one question remained.
If Claire believed Khalil was involved, why had she left a message asking him to protect Ariana?
Tiffany watched him struggle with the contradiction.
Then she leaned forward and delivered the words that would change everything.

“There's one person who can prove whose signature that really is,” she said.
“And she's the last person you would ever suspect.””
