Chapter 2: The Lie at the Dinner Table
Khalil knew something was wrong the moment he stepped into the dining room.
Three plates were set on the table, but no food had been served. Tiffany stood beside the kitchen island, arranging silverware that was already perfectly straight. Ariana sat in a chair near the window, her hands folded in her lap.
Her eyes were red.
Her backpack rested against her legs.
“What's going on?”” Khalil asked, loosening his tie.
Tiffany turned with a tired sigh.
“I'm glad you're home. We've had another difficult afternoon.””
Ariana immediately looked up.
“Dad—”
“Let me explain first, sweetheart,” Tiffany interrupted gently.
That gentle voice was the one Khalil trusted. It was the voice she used when guests visited, when neighbors stopped by, and whenever she wanted to appear patient with a girl who supposedly made her life difficult.
Khalil put his briefcase down.
“All right. Explain what?””
Tiffany touched his arm.
“I tried to reorganize Ariana's bedroom so my sister could stay with us next week. I thought it would be a nice opportunity for Ariana to donate some old things she doesn't need anymore.””
Ariana's fingers tightened around the edge of her backpack.
“Mom's things aren't old junk,” she said.
Tiffany closed her eyes briefly, as though gathering patience.
“There it is.””
Khalil looked between them.
“What does that mean?””
“It means I can't suggest anything without Ariana accusing me of attacking her mother's memory.”” Tiffany's voice trembled slightly.
“I found an old photograph, and she started screaming at me. Then she grabbed my arm.””
“I didn't!””
“Ariana,” Khalil warned.
The warning hurt more than the accusation.
Ariana stared at him.
“You weren't even here.””
“I don't need to be present for every argument to know when someone's behaving badly.””
“But you don't know what happened!””
Tiffany lowered her head.
“See? This is what I live with every day.””
Khalil rubbed his forehead.
He had spent the last three years trying to rebuild a stable home after Claire's death. When he met Tiffany, she'd seemed to bring light back into his life. She cooked his favorite meals, remembered his appointments, and spoke about Ariana as though loving his daughter was the most natural thing in the world.
But lately, the house had become a place of whispered complaints and closed doors.
Tiffany always said she was trying.
Ariana always said Tiffany was lying.
And Khalil, exhausted by work and terrified of failing his daughter, had begun choosing the explanation that required the least immediate conflict.
“Where's your phone?”” he asked Ariana.
She swallowed.
“Tiffany took it.””
Tiffany's head snapped up.
“I did no such thing.””
Ariana looked at her in disbelief.
“You put it in your pocket upstairs!””
“That's enough,” Khalil said.
“No, Dad! She has it right now!””
Tiffany slowly reached into her pocket.
She removed Ariana's phone and placed it on the table.
“There. I found it upstairs when I went to check on her. I was bringing it down to you because I thought we needed to discuss her behavior.””
Khalil looked at the phone, then at his daughter.
“Why would she need to discuss your behavior with me?”” Ariana asked.
“Because you have been making threats,” Tiffany replied.
“What threats?””
“You know exactly what I'm talking about.””
“No, I don't!””
Tiffany turned toward Khalil.
“Yesterday, she told me that if I ever touched her mother's things again, she'd make sure you divorced me.””
Khalil went quiet.
Ariana stared at Tiffany.
“I never said that.””
“Then perhaps you should listen to yourself before denying it.””
Tiffany slid the phone across the table toward Khalil.
“There's a recording on here. She told me she was collecting evidence against me.””
Ariana felt the room tilt.
Tiffany had discovered the files, but she didn't know which recordings Ariana had backed up or whether she'd already sent one to her father.
She was bluffing.
Ariana had to believe that.
“Dad, don't listen to her,” Ariana said quickly.
“Listen to the recording. Just listen to it.””
Khalil picked up the phone.
Tiffany's expression softened into concern.
“I don't want to punish her, Khalil. She's hurting. I know that. But grief doesn't give her permission to destroy our marriage.””
“Play it,” Ariana insisted.
Khalil looked at the screen.
A recording file was open.
He pressed the play button.
For a second, there was only a faint rustle.
Then Tiffany's voice emerged.
“If you tell Khalil what happened, I'll make sure he sends you away.””
Khalil's eyebrows drew together.
The recording continued.
“I'll tell him you stole money. I'll tell him you threatened me. And do you know what he'll believe?””
Silence fell over the dining room.
Then came Tiffany's recorded answer.
“Me. I'm his wife. You're just the child he feels sorry for.””
Khalil stopped breathing for a moment.
He looked at Tiffany.
She stared at the phone.
Ariana's eyes filled with tears, but this time she didn't look away.
“Dad,” she whispered, “that's what she says when you're not here.””
Tiffany recovered quickly.
“That is completely out of context.””
Khalil's voice was low.
“What context could possibly make that acceptable?””
“I was angry. Ariana had been provoking me for weeks.””
“By doing what?”” he asked.
“She refuses to accept me! She treats every attempt I make to help her as an insult. I was trying to explain consequences.””
“You threatened to make me believe she stole money?””
“I was frustrated!””
Ariana leaned forward.
“You also said you would throw away Mom's things.””
Tiffany turned toward her.
“Don't you dare twist this further.””
“Stop,” Khalil said sharply.
Both women fell silent.
He replayed the final few seconds, listening to his wife's voice repeat the words that had just changed the room.
You're just the child he feels sorry for.
Khalil had never thought of Ariana that way.
He had worried about her. Sometimes he had been impatient with her. Sometimes he had wished she would stop asking questions he didn't know how to answer.
But she was his daughter.
The only child he and Claire had ever had.
He set the phone down.
“Tiffany, I want you to explain exactly what happened.””
She crossed her arms.
“I already told you.””
“No. You told me a story. I want the truth.””
Her face hardened.
“You're going to take her side over your own wife?””
“I'm asking you a question.””
“And I'm telling you that your daughter has become obsessed with making me look evil.””
Ariana reached for her backpack.
“Dad, there's another recording.””
Tiffany stepped forward.
“No, there isn't.””
Ariana pulled out her old tablet.
“I copied them.””
For the first time that evening, Tiffany looked genuinely afraid.
Khalil turned toward his daughter.
“How many recordings?””
“Six,” Ariana said.
“Maybe more. I started saving them because every time I told you what she did, you said I was misunderstanding her.””
Khalil's face changed.
Ariana had not shouted.
She had not accused him of being a bad father.
That made her words worse.
Tiffany shook her head.
“This is ridiculous. She's been secretly recording private conversations. You can't seriously reward that behavior.””
Khalil looked at the tablet.
“Did you say these things to her?””
Tiffany's lips parted.
Then she glanced toward the hallway.
“No,” she said.
Ariana stared at her.
“You just heard yourself.””
“I said I was angry. That recording proves nothing about what led up to it.””
“Then let's hear the others,” Khalil replied.
Tiffany reached for the tablet.
Ariana pulled it against her chest.
“Don't touch it!””
“Give it to me,” Tiffany snapped.
“No!””
Tiffany grabbed the edge of the tablet.
The device slipped from Ariana's hands and struck the floor.
A sharp crack split the silence.
Ariana gasped and dropped to her knees.
“Mom's tablet!””
Tiffany stepped back, breathing hard.
“I barely touched it.””
Khalil stared at the shattered screen.
Then he looked at his wife.
“Go upstairs, Tiffany.””
She blinked.
“What?””
“Go upstairs. I need a moment with my daughter.””
Tiffany's eyes glistened, but her voice became cold.
“Fine. Comfort her. Tell her she's innocent. But when you discover what she's been hiding from you, don't expect me to apologize for trying to protect this family.””
She walked out of the dining room.
Khalil knelt beside Ariana and helped her lift the tablet.
“I'm sorry,” he said quietly.
Ariana kept her eyes on the cracked screen.
“Are you sorry because she broke it,” she asked, “or because you finally heard her?””
Khalil had no answer.
Ariana carried the tablet to her bedroom.
He followed her and watched as she opened a cloud storage folder on her laptop. Several audio files appeared, each labeled with a date.
“There's something else,” she said.
Khalil pulled a chair beside her.
Ariana clicked a file recorded eleven days earlier.
Tiffany's voice filled the room.
“Denise knows what really happened the night Claire died. If she ever opens her mouth, we'll both lose everything.””
Khalil went completely still.
The recording continued.
Then another voice spoke.
Denise's voice.
And what she said next made Khalil rise so abruptly that his chair toppled backward.
May you like
Because Denise wasn't talking about Ariana.
She was talking about Claire.
