Chapter 5: Denise Finally Speaks

“Sit down, Tiffany.””

Khalil's voice was so controlled that Ariana almost wished he would shout.

Tiffany stood at the foot of the staircase, gripping her handbag.

“I'm not going to sit here while my sister betrays me.””

Denise wiped her cheeks.

“You betrayed yourself, Tiffany.””

Tiffany turned on her.

“You ungrateful woman. After everything I've done for you, this is how you repay me?””

Denise's shoulders stiffened.

“You haven't done anything for me except remind me what you can take away.””

Khalil moved between them.

“Enough. Both of you.””

He placed the legal agreement on the coffee table.

“I want to know what this is, why Claire was involved, and why my wife's name is on a note about transferring control of my daughter's trust.””

Tiffany laughed without humor.

“It's a legal document. That's all.””

“Then explain it.””

“Claire inherited money from her parents. She wanted to control every penny, even after she married you. She didn't trust anyone.””

Khalil frowned.

“That isn't true.””

“You weren't there when she discussed the arrangements with us.””

“Then why was she being pressured to sign something?””

Tiffany's eyes narrowed.

“Because she was being unreasonable.””

Denise shook her head.

“No. Claire was protecting Ariana.””

Tiffany lunged toward the document.

Denise grabbed it first.

“Don't you dare!””

The sisters faced each other across the coffee table.

For years, Khalil had seen them together at holidays, birthdays, and family gatherings. Tiffany was always the confident one, the woman who organized everything and spoke for everyone. Denise had seemed quieter, more willing to let her sister take charge.

Now he saw something else.

Denise wasn't simply afraid of Tiffany's temper.

She was afraid of what she had helped Tiffany do.

“Tell him,” Denise said.

Tiffany's voice dropped.

“You'll regret this.””

“Maybe I should have regretted it three years ago.””

Khalil looked at Denise.

“What happened three years ago?””

Denise sat down, pressing her hands against her knees.

“Claire's parents left her a substantial inheritance. Most of it was placed in a trust. When Ariana turned eighteen, she would become eligible to receive the assets designated for her future. Until then, Claire controlled the trust with an independent financial administrator.””

Khalil nodded slowly.

He remembered Claire explaining the arrangement shortly after Ariana was born. He had never been particularly interested in the details. Claire had managed the family's investments, and he trusted her completely.

“What does Tiffany have to do with it?”” he asked.

Denise glanced at her sister.

“Tiffany was having financial problems.””

Tiffany scoffed.

“I was starting a business.””

“You were borrowing money from people you couldn't repay,” Denise replied.

“You were using credit cards to cover other credit cards. When the business failed, you hid the debt from everyone.””

Khalil stared at his wife.

“Is that true?””

Tiffany lifted her chin.

“I had a difficult period. That doesn't make me a criminal.””

“No,” Denise said.

“But asking Claire to transfer control of the trust so you could use the assets as collateral was wrong.””

Khalil looked at the agreement again.

“You wanted to borrow against Ariana's inheritance?””

“I was going to repay it,” Tiffany snapped.

“With what?”” Denise demanded.

“You had no income, no successful business, and creditors calling you every day.””

“I had a plan!””

“You had a fantasy!””

Tiffany slammed her handbag onto the coffee table.

“Watch your mouth!””

Ariana jumped.

Khalil immediately moved closer to his daughter.

“Don't shout at her,” he told Tiffany.

“I'm not shouting at Ariana!””

“You're shouting in front of her. And I'm done watching you frighten her to control a conversation.””

Tiffany looked as though she had been physically struck.

Denise drew a shaky breath.

“Claire refused to sign. She told Tiffany that the trust existed for Ariana, and she wouldn't risk her daughter's future to rescue someone else's finances.””

Khalil's fingers curled around the edge of the document.

“And then?””

“Two days before Claire died, Tiffany called me. She said Claire was being stubborn and needed to understand the consequences of refusing.””

Ariana felt cold.

“Did Tiffany hurt Mom?””

Denise looked at the girl.

“I don't know what happened in the car that night.””

Tiffany seized on the answer.

“Exactly! You don't know anything!””

Denise continued, louder this time.

“But I know what happened before it. Tiffany asked me to help her get Claire to a meeting. She said if Claire wouldn't cooperate voluntarily, we needed to find another way.””

Khalil stared at her.

“What meeting?””

“A meeting with a lawyer who was willing to prepare documents transferring temporary control of the trust.””

“Was I supposed to know about it?””

“No,” Denise whispered.

“Why?””

“Because Claire had already told you she was worried about Tiffany's debts. Tiffany knew you would stop the meeting if you found out.””

Khalil turned toward his wife.

Tiffany was standing perfectly still.

“You told me you barely knew Claire before we met,” he said.

“I knew her through Denise.””

“You visited her at the hospital.””

“Everyone visited people at hospitals, Khalil!””

“Why?””

“Because I wanted her to sign the documents!””

The words exploded from Tiffany before she could stop them.

Silence followed.

Her mouth remained open.

Denise stared at her.

Khalil didn't move.

Tiffany looked from one face to another, realizing what she had just admitted.

Then she began to speak quickly.

“I mean, I wanted her to consider them. I never threatened her. I never hurt her. I was trying to solve a financial problem before it ruined everyone's lives.””

“Whose lives?”” Khalil asked.

“Mine. Yours. Ariana's!””

“You wanted to take money from my daughter's trust.””

“I wanted to borrow it!””

“Without telling me?””

“Because you would have said no!””

“Because it wasn't yours!””

Tiffany's composure shattered.

“You have no idea what it was like!”” she shouted.

“I was drowning, and Claire had enough money to save me ten times over. She could have helped me, but she chose to sit on her fortune while I begged for a chance to rebuild my life.””

Denise stood.

“Claire wasn't responsible for your debts.””

“She could have prevented everything that happened afterward!””

Khalil's eyes narrowed.

“What happened afterward?””

Tiffany froze.

Denise's face went white.

Ariana looked at both women.

“Dad?””

Khalil didn't take his eyes off Tiffany.

“What do you mean, everything that happened afterward?””

Tiffany grabbed her handbag.

“I'm leaving.””

“No,” Khalil said.

She turned toward him.

“You cannot order me to stay in this house.””

“I'm not ordering you to do anything. I'm telling you that we're not finished.””

“I'm finished!””

She reached for the front door.

Denise's voice stopped her.

“You still haven't told him about the phone call.””

Tiffany's hand froze on the doorknob.

Khalil slowly turned toward Denise.

“What phone call?””

Denise began trembling.

“The call Tiffany made to Claire on the night she died.””

Tiffany spun around.

“You swore you would never tell anyone about that!””

Denise flinched, but she didn't retreat.

“I kept that promise long enough.””

Khalil took one step forward.

“What did you say to Claire that night?””

Tiffany shook her head.

“Nothing. It was a normal conversation.””

Denise's voice broke.

“It wasn't normal. You were screaming at her. I could hear everything because you had me on a second line.””

Khalil stared at her.

“Why were you on the call?””

“Because Tiffany asked me to listen. She said she needed me to convince Claire to sign the papers.””

Ariana covered her mouth.

Denise looked at Khalil, tears streaming down her face.

“Claire told Tiffany she was going to call you. She said she would tell you everything about the trust, the debts, and the threats. Tiffany panicked.””

“What did Tiffany say?””

Denise looked toward her sister.

Tiffany's face had become almost colorless.

“She told Claire that if Claire went to you, she'd make sure Claire regretted it.””

Khalil's voice was barely audible.

“And Claire?””

“She said she wasn't afraid of Tiffany anymore.””

Denise swallowed hard.

“Then Claire said she was leaving to come home. She wanted to talk to you in person.””

Khalil felt the air leave his lungs.

Claire had been driving home that night.

He remembered calling her twice. He remembered the unanswered calls, the police officer at his door, the way the world had stopped making sense.

He had never known there had been an argument before the accident.

“Did Tiffany cause the crash?”” he asked.

Denise shook her head desperately.

“I don't know. I swear to you, I don't know.””

Tiffany seized the opportunity.

“See? She has nothing! She's inventing a story because she's jealous and bitter.””

Denise turned toward her.

“I have the original voicemail.””

Tiffany stopped breathing.

Khalil stared at Denise.

“You have what?””

“The message Claire left me after the call. She said she was scared. She said Tiffany had threatened her. I saved it because I thought I might need it someday.””

Tiffany stepped away from the door.

“Denise, please.””

It was the first time Ariana had heard Tiffany beg.

Denise reached into her handbag.

But before she could remove her phone, Tiffany rushed forward and grabbed her wrist.

“Don't!””

Khalil pulled Tiffany away.

“Get your hands off her!””

Tiffany stumbled backward.

Denise retrieved her phone with shaking fingers.

“I should have given this to the police years ago,” she whispered.

She opened an old voicemail folder.

One message was dated the night Claire died.

Khalil reached for the phone, but Denise held it close to her chest.

“I need you to understand something,” she said.

“This message doesn't prove Tiffany caused the accident. But it proves Claire was afraid of her before she ever got into that car.””

Then Denise pressed play.

Claire's voice filled the room.

“Khalil, if you ever hear this, please don't let anyone convince Ariana that her mother abandoned her. I love you both. And if Tiffany tells you this was all an accident, you need to ask her why she—”

The message cut off.

Denise stared at the screen.

Khalil's face went rigid.

“Why she what?””

Denise tried to replay the message, but the recording ended at the same place.

Tiffany slowly lowered herself onto the sofa.

Her hands were shaking.

May you like

And when Khalil looked at her, she whispered the words that made Ariana understand just how deep the secret went.

“Claire was never supposed to leave that message.””
