Chapter 7: The Man at the Door
The man standing in my doorway looked like a stranger.
But somehow, I knew him.
Not because I had seen him before.
Because I had spent my entire life carrying pieces of him without knowing it.
The shape of my eyes.
The slight tilt of my head when I was confused.
The way my fingers curled when I was angry.
I hated that I noticed those things.
I hated that a part of me wanted to ask him questions.
Because another part of me wanted to close the door and never see him again.
James moved between us immediately.
“Who are you?””
The man looked at him.
Then back at me.
“My name is Daniel Reed.””
Lauren covered her mouth.
My father stepped forward.
“You need to leave.””
Daniel’s eyes hardened.
“I came here to see my daughter.””
The word hit me like a slap.
Daughter.
I looked at Lauren.
She was crying.
Not because she was surprised.
Because she had known this day would come.
“You knew he was coming,” I whispered.
She shook her head quickly.
“No.””
But Daniel answered.
“She didn’t.””
His voice was calmer than I expected.
Almost too calm.
“I came because I saw the news.””
“What news?”” James asked.
Daniel looked at him.
“The military homecoming article. James Walker returning after nine months overseas. There was a picture of Claire and the baby.””
My stomach dropped.
“You found us because of a picture?””
Daniel looked at Emma’s photo still open on my phone.
“I found you because I never stopped looking.””
James’s expression changed.
“That’s not a good thing.””
Daniel ignored him.
“Claire, I know you have questions.””
I laughed quietly.
“Questions?””
My voice shook.
“I have a lifetime of questions.””
He nodded.
“I know.””
“No, you don’t.””
I stepped forward.
“You don’t know what it feels like to grow up wondering why you never looked like anyone in your family. You don’t know what it feels like to discover everyone has been protecting you from your own life.””
Daniel looked down.
For a moment, he looked ashamed.
Then he said:
“I know more than you think.””
I froze.
“What does that mean?””
He reached into his coat pocket.
James immediately reacted.
“Don’t.””
Daniel slowly pulled out a small envelope.
“No weapon.””
He placed it on the table.
“This is yours.””
I stared at it.
“What is it?””
“Something Lauren wrote before she gave you away.””
Lauren looked up.
Her face changed.
“Where did you get that?””
Daniel looked at her.
“You gave it to me.””
The room became silent.
“You told me if I ever saw Claire again, I had to give her the truth.””
Lauren shook her head.
“No.””
“Yes.””
“No, Daniel. That’s not what happened.””
His expression darkened.
“You don’t remember because you wanted to forget.””
My father stepped between them.
“Enough.””
Daniel looked at him.
“You’re still pretending you saved her.””
Dad’s jaw tightened.
“I protected her.””
“You erased her.””
The words hung in the air.
I looked at my father.
And for the first time, I wondered how many choices had been made for me.
Detective Harris stepped forward.
“Mr. Reed, you need to explain why you have been contacting this family.””
Daniel looked surprised.
“I contacted James because I was worried.””
“Worried about what?””
Daniel looked at me.
“About Lauren.””
Everyone froze.
Lauren whispered, “What?””
Daniel took a breath.
“After Emma was born, Lauren started searching for Claire’s records.””
My eyes moved to my sister.
“My records?””
Lauren looked away.
“I wanted to know more about you.””
“Why?””
She cried harder.
“Because I lost you.””
I felt something twist inside me.
“You had no right to look for me through my daughter.””
“I know.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“I know.””
Daniel continued.
“And when she found out Claire had a daughter, she became convinced something was happening again.””
“What?””
He looked at Lauren.
“You thought Emma was fate.””
Lauren closed her eyes.
“I was grieving.””
“That doesn’t excuse it.””
For the first time, Daniel sounded angry.
“You started collecting information. Photos. Medical records.””
I looked at Lauren.
“Is that true?””
She didn’t answer.
That was answer enough.
James stepped closer to me.
“Claire.””
I couldn’t move.
My sister.
My birth mother.
My father.
Everyone I loved had been hiding pieces of my life.
Then my phone buzzed.
Everyone looked.
Another unknown message.
This time, there was a photo.
Not of Emma.
Not of my house.
Of Daniel.
Standing outside our home.
Taken ten minutes earlier.

Underneath it were six words.
