Chapter 11: The Place Where I Began
I didn’t tell James about the message.
That was my first mistake.
I know that now.
But at the time, I thought I was protecting him.
Funny.
Everyone in my life used that excuse.
I thought I could handle one conversation.
One meeting.
One answer.
I needed to know why Victor had spent my entire life hiding in the shadows.
The address led to an old apartment building on the edge of town.
The kind of place people forgot existed.
The paint was peeling.
The hallway smelled like dust and old wood.
I stood outside apartment 3B for almost five minutes before knocking.
Nobody answered.
Then the door opened.
Victor Hale stood there.
Older than I expected.
Gray at his temples.
But his eyes were exactly like the photograph.
Cold.
Focused.
“You came.””
I should have walked away.
Every instinct told me to leave.
But I stepped inside.
“You wanted to talk.””
He smiled slightly.
“I wanted you to know the truth.””
“I’ve heard enough versions of the truth.””
His smile faded.
“That family has lied to you your entire life.””
“You were part of that lie.””
His expression hardened.
“No.””
He stepped closer.
“I was the only person who fought for you.””
I almost laughed.
“You tried to take me from my mother.””
“I tried to save you.””
“You weren’t my father.””
His face changed.
Pain.
Anger.
Something darker.
“I loved you.””
I shook my head.
“You didn’t know me.””
“I knew everything about you.””
That sentence made my stomach turn.
“What does that mean?””
He walked toward a table.
There were papers everywhere.
Photos.
Documents.
My childhood.
My graduation.
My wedding.
My breath caught.
“You’ve been watching me.””
“I’ve been protecting you.””
I stepped back.
“No.””
He looked confused.
“No?””
“You don’t get to call obsession protection.””
His jaw tightened.
“You don’t understand.””
“I understand enough.””
I pointed toward the photos.
“You followed me.””
“I watched over you.””
“You watched me.””
Silence.
Then he said:
“They took you away.””
“Who?””
“Everyone.””
He looked angry now.
“Lauren gave you up. Daniel tried to steal you. Your parents lied to you.””
I stared at him.
“And what did you do?””
He went quiet.
For the first time, I saw something like guilt.
“I made mistakes.””
“Big ones.””
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“Then why are you doing this?””
He looked at me.
“Because Emma changes everything.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
He walked closer.
“When I saw the picture of your daughter, I knew.””
“Knew what?””
“That history was repeating.””
I felt sick.
“You think Emma belongs to you too?””
“No.””
His answer came quickly.
“She belongs with you.””
I didn’t understand.
“Then why threaten to take her?””
His face changed.
“I didn’t.””
I froze.
“What?””
“I never sent those messages.””
The room went silent.
“You expect me to believe that?””
“No.””
He looked at the papers on the table.
“Because I know who did.””
My heartbeat increased.
“Who?””
Victor picked up one photograph.
A photograph of Lauren.
Taken recently.
At my parents’ house.
“She did.””
I stared.
“No.””
Victor looked at me.
“Your sister isn’t the only person who wanted Emma.””
My phone suddenly rang.
James.
I looked at the screen.
I answered immediately.
“James?””
His voice was tense.
“Claire, where are you?””
I stayed silent.
“Claire.””
I heard panic in his voice.
“Emma is gone.””
Everything stopped.
“What?””
“The nursery window is open.””
My knees weakened.
“No.””
“We’re searching the house.””
I looked at Victor.
And for the first time, he looked genuinely afraid.
Then James said the words that shattered me.
“Claire…”
May you like
A pause.
“There’s a note.””
