Chapter 15: The Room Beneath the House

The basement door had been locked for twenty years.

That was the first thing my father told us.

The second thing was worse.

“I don’t have the key.””

James looked at him.

“Then how did someone get inside?””

Nobody answered.

The police arrived within minutes.

The entire house was searched again.

But this time, they weren’t looking for an intruder.

They were looking for a place someone had hidden.

The basement was beneath the old part of the house.

A section my parents had stopped using after renovations.

I remembered it vaguely.

A dark hallway.

A strange smell.

A door I was never allowed to open.

As a child, I thought every family had rooms they weren’t allowed to enter.

I was wrong.

Detective Harris examined the lock.

“Someone forced it.””

The door opened slowly.

The air inside was cold.

Dust covered everything.

Old boxes.

Broken furniture.

Memories nobody wanted.

James held my hand as we walked inside.

Then I saw it.

The lighthouse painting.

The same one from the video.

My legs almost gave out.

“She was here.””

James looked at me.

“Who?””

“Emma.””

The room became silent.

On the floor was a blanket.

A baby bottle.

And a stuffed rabbit.

Emma’s rabbit.

I covered my mouth.

Detective Harris immediately began searching.

“Everyone stay back.””

But I couldn’t.

Because on the wall were photographs.

Hundreds of them.

My entire life.

My first birthday.

My first day of school.

My wedding.

Emma’s birth.

I felt sick.

Someone had been watching me.

Recording me.

Collecting me.

My father looked around.

“I didn’t know.””

I turned toward him.

“You said that before.””

He looked broken.

“I swear.””

Then James found something.

A box hidden behind a shelf.

Inside were documents.

Letters.

And a notebook.

Detective Harris opened the notebook carefully.

The first page had one name.

*Victor Hale.*

The second page had another.

*Richard Walker.*

My father went pale.

“What is that?””

I looked at him.

“You tell me.””

Detective Harris read silently.

Then his expression changed.

“What?””

He looked at us.

“This isn’t from Victor.””

“Then who?””

He turned the notebook around.

The final page had a signature.

A name.

Margaret Walker.

My mother.

Nobody moved.

James looked at me.

“Claire…”

I shook my head.

“No.””

But I knew.

I knew before anyone said it.

The secrets were deeper than I imagined.

My mother had not just known.

She had written.

I grabbed the notebook.

The first line of her entry made my hands shake.

*I thought if I controlled every part of Claire’s life, I could keep her safe.*

The next sentence was worse.

*But then Lauren became pregnant again, and I knew the past was coming back.*

I stopped reading.

Lauren.

Pregnant again?

Everyone looked at me.

And suddenly, I understood.

Emma wasn’t just connected to my past.

She was connected to a secret that started before she was even born.

I turned the page.

There was one final entry.

Written three days before Christmas.

*Victor has found out about Emma.*

*But he is not the person I fear most.*

My heart pounded.

May you like

The final sentence was underlined.

*The real danger is the person who has been protecting us all along.*
