Chapter 10: The Photograph That Changed Everything

I stared at the photograph until my fingers went numb.

A baby wrapped in a white hospital blanket.

A tiny pink face.

A hospital bracelet around a fragile wrist.

Me.

The back of the photograph had only four words.

*The night you disappeared.*

My first thought was that Victor had sent it.

My second thought was that someone wanted me to believe that.

Because after everything I had learned, I no longer trusted simple answers.

“Claire?””

James was standing beside me.

I handed him the photo without speaking.

His expression changed as he read the words.

“Where did you find this?””

“In Emma’s crib.””

His jaw tightened.

“Impossible.””

“I know.””

He immediately reached for his phone.

“I’m calling Harris.””

I looked toward the nursery.

Emma was asleep again, unaware that her tiny room had become the center of a war between people from a life she had never known.

A life I had never known.

When Detective Harris arrived, he studied the photograph carefully.

“Who else knew where you kept this blanket?””

“Nobody,” I said.

He looked at me.

“Are you sure?””

“Yes.””

Then his eyes moved toward the hallway.

Toward Daniel.

Daniel stood frozen.

“You know something,” Harris said.

Daniel didn’t answer.

“Mr. Reed.””

Daniel looked at the photograph.

“I’ve seen this before.””

My heart dropped.

“Where?””

He swallowed.

“At the hospital.””

Everyone became silent.

I stepped closer.

“You were there.””

“Yes.””

“Tell me exactly what happened.””

Daniel looked at Lauren.

She nodded slowly.

“Tell her.””

Daniel sat down.

“The night you were born, I was outside your hospital room.””

My stomach twisted.

“Why?””

“Because Lauren called me.””

Lauren looked down.

“I was scared.””

Daniel continued.

“She told me Victor had found out about the baby.””

I frowned.

“But you said Victor wasn’t there until later.””

“He wasn’t supposed to be.””

Daniel’s voice lowered.

“He followed me.””

Detective Harris leaned forward.

“Why would Victor follow you?””

Daniel looked at the table.

“Because he knew about the adoption.””

I looked at Lauren.

“You told him?””

“No.””

Her voice cracked.

“He found out.””

Daniel nodded.

“He believed the baby was his.””

A chill ran through me.

“He thought I was his?””

“Yes.””

The room felt smaller.

“He wasn’t your father,” Lauren whispered.

I looked at her.

“But he thought he was.””

She nodded.

“And he became obsessed.””

Daniel took a shaky breath.

“The night Claire was born, Victor came to the hospital.””

“What happened?””

“He argued with Lauren.””

“About me?””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked at me.

“He said nobody could take you away from him.””

My skin crawled.

“Then what?””

“I tried to stop him.””

“You fought him?””

“Yes.””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“I was angry. I was scared. I made a terrible decision.””

“What decision?””

He looked at me.

“I took you.””

The room went silent.

Again.

The same confession.

But this time, I needed the truth.

“For seven minutes.””

Daniel nodded.

“For seven minutes, I carried you toward the exit.””

“Why?””

“Because Victor had threatened you.””

I shook my head.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Then why did nobody tell me?””

Daniel looked at my mother.

“Because Margaret and Richard thought hiding the truth would protect Claire.””

My mother closed her eyes.

I looked at her.

“Mom?””

She whispered:

“We found out later that Victor had followed Daniel.””

I froze.

“What?””

She nodded.

“When Daniel took you, Victor followed him.””

My heart pounded.

“What happened?””

My father answered this time.

“He caught up with him.””

I looked at Daniel.

“What did he do?””

Daniel’s face became pale.

“He tried to take you.””

The room went quiet.

“And?””

Daniel looked at his hands.

“And I stopped him.””

A thousand questions rushed through my mind.

Then one stood above the rest.

“How did the adoption happen?””

Nobody answered immediately.

Finally, my father said:

“Because after that night, everyone agreed you needed to disappear.””

My eyebrows pulled together.

“Disappear?””

“From Victor.””

Detective Harris looked at the photo again.

“Then this photograph…”

My father nodded.

“Was supposed to be destroyed.””

I turned.

“By who?””

My father’s face changed.

And I knew before he spoke.

“Lauren.””

Everyone looked at her.

She began crying.

“I couldn’t destroy it.””

“Why?””

She looked at me.

“Because it was the only proof I had that you were real.””

My anger weakened.

Only for a second.

Then my phone buzzed.

A new message.

From Victor.

I opened it.

There was no text.

Only a location.

An address.
