Chapter 8: The Uncle Who Knew Everything
Danielle stared at her phone.
The fire alarm continued screaming.
Marcus pulled her toward the hallway.
“Answer it!””
She shook her head.
“What?””
“Answer the call. Put it on speaker.””
Danielle accepted.
“Hello?””
A familiar voice came through.
“Danielle, sweetheart. Where are you?””
Her throat tightened.
“Uncle Robert?””
“Yes. I've been trying to reach you.””
She looked at Richard.
He was watching her with frightened eyes.
“Why are you calling?””
There was a pause.
Then Robert said, “Because your husband has made a terrible mistake.””
Marcus leaned closer.
“What mistake?””
Robert laughed softly.
“Hello, Marcus.””
Marcus's expression hardened.
“You're involved with Daniel?””
“Don't be dramatic. I'm trying to prevent another tragedy.””
Richard suddenly shouted from behind them.
“Robert! You son of a bitch!””
The voice on the phone went silent.
Then Robert said quietly, “Richard. I thought you were supposed to be dead.””
Richard stepped toward the phone.
“Not dead enough for you, apparently.””
Robert sighed.
“Always the same, Richard. You never knew when to stop interfering.””
Marcus looked toward the emergency exit.
“We need to leave.””
Robert continued speaking.
“Marcus, listen carefully. Your father is lying to you. He always has.””
Marcus tightened his grip on the phone.
“What did you do to my grandmother's company?””
Robert chuckled.
“Your father made plenty of mistakes. But Daniel was the one who cleaned them up.””
Richard shook his head.
“Don't listen to him!””
Robert ignored him.
“Danielle, do you remember the blue room?””
Danielle's blood ran cold.
“Yes.””
“Your mother used to take you there when you were little. Didn't she?””
Danielle remembered a small room in her childhood home.
The walls had been painted pale blue.
There had been a wooden cabinet, a little desk, and a window overlooking the garden.
Her mother had called it her quiet room.
But after her mother died, Robert had sold the house.
“Why are you asking?””
“Because there's something in that room that belongs to me.””
Richard shouted, “He's lying! Your mother left evidence there!””
Robert's voice turned sharp.
“Richard, shut your mouth.””
Then the call ended.
Marcus stared at Danielle.
“Do you still remember the address?””
She nodded.
“My mother's old house. It's outside the city.””
“Then we're going there.””
A crash echoed from the main entrance.
One of the officers working at the facility shouted for everyone to move.
Marcus grabbed the envelope.
Victoria helped Richard stand.
They rushed toward the emergency exit.
Outside, cold rain hit their faces.
The black SUV had disappeared.
But a second vehicle was waiting near the rear gate.
A silver sedan.
The driver lowered his window.
“Mr. Brooks?””
Marcus stepped forward cautiously.
“Who are you?””
“My name is Samuel. I'm Patricia's brother.””
Victoria recognized him.
“Samuel?””
He nodded.
“Patricia sent me. She said you needed help.””
Marcus looked at the car.
“Where is she?””
“Safe. Noah is with her.””
Danielle stepped closer.
“Can we see him?””
Samuel looked at her for a moment.
Then he nodded.
“If you come with me.””
They climbed into the car.
As Samuel drove away, Marcus called the police and reported the attempted attack.
Richard sat in the front passenger seat, staring at the rain-covered window.
Victoria sat beside Danielle.
For the first time since the morning, nobody was arguing.
After twenty minutes, Samuel pulled into a quiet residential neighborhood.
A small white house stood at the end of the street.
A woman opened the door before they reached the steps.
Patricia Miller.
She looked exhausted.
Her hair was tied back, and dark circles rested beneath her eyes.
“Marcus?””
He nodded.
Patricia stepped aside.
“Come in.””
A little boy sat on the living room carpet, building a tower with colorful blocks.
When he looked up, Marcus stopped breathing.
Noah had his eyes.
His smile.
Even the small dimple on his left cheek.
“Hello,” the boy said.
Marcus crouched.
“Hi, buddy.””
Noah tilted his head.
“Are you my dad?””
Marcus's eyes filled.
He nodded.
“If you'll let me be.””
Noah considered that.
Then he held up a red building block.
“Can you help me?””
Marcus laughed through his tears.
“Of course.””
Danielle watched from the doorway.
Something inside her broke.
Not because she was jealous.
Because she realized how many innocent people had been hurt by the lies she had helped maintain.
Patricia approached her.
“Danielle?””
She turned.
“I know what you're thinking.””
Danielle lowered her eyes.
“I didn't know about Noah.””
“I believe you.””
Patricia hesitated.
“But Daniel told me you were part of the arrangement.””
Danielle looked up.
“What arrangement?””
Patricia took out a folder.
Inside were copies of emails, payment records, and legal documents.
“Daniel promised me that if I signed away my parental rights, he would make sure Noah had a stable home. He said you wanted a child and couldn't have one.””
Danielle felt sick.
“He told you I wanted to adopt him?””
Patricia nodded.
“He said you knew everything.””
Danielle stared at the documents.
One email had been sent from Daniel's account.
Danielle is fully aware of the situation. She has agreed to act as Noah's legal mother. Keep her name on all records.
Danielle looked at Marcus.
“He planned to use Noah to cover his crimes.””
Marcus nodded.
“It's all part of the same scheme.””
Patricia handed him another document.
“This is the reason I called you.””
It was a photograph of a bank account statement.
The account belonged to a company registered under Danielle's name.
But the listed beneficiary was Robert Miller.
Danielle frowned.
“Robert?””
Patricia shook her head.
“Your uncle.””
The name was familiar.
Her mother's brother was Robert Hayes.
She stared at the account number.
“This money came from my mother's estate.””
Patricia nodded.
“Your mother left a trust for you. Daniel and your uncle moved the money into several accounts.””
Marcus examined the dates.
The first transfer had occurred six years earlier.
The last one had happened only two months ago.
Danielle looked at Patricia.
“How much?””
Patricia swallowed.
“Just under three million dollars.””
The room fell silent.
Danielle sat down.
Her mother had left her money.
Money that could have helped her build her business, support her family, and create a secure future.
Instead, her uncle and Daniel had stolen it.
Marcus placed a hand on her shoulder.
“We'll get it back.””
Danielle nodded, but her eyes remained on the papers.
Then Patricia handed her one final envelope.
“Your mother left this with me.””
Danielle opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
My darling Danielle,
If you're reading this, then someone has finally uncovered the truth. I need you to understand that I never abandoned you. I tried to protect you from people who believed money was more important than family.
Danielle began crying.
She continued reading.
The blue room contains the original trust documents, but it also contains something more important. A recording of the conversation that destroyed our family.
At the bottom was one final sentence.
Your uncle Robert was not working alone.
Danielle looked up.
“Who else was involved?””
Patricia pointed to a name written beneath the letter.
Marcus read it.
Then he slowly turned toward Victoria.
Victoria's face went white.
The name was *Evelyn Hayes*.
Victoria's mother.
The woman who had supposedly died when Victoria was a teenager.
Victoria stood abruptly.
“My mother is dead.””
Patricia shook her head.
“No, Victoria. She isn't.””
Victoria stared at her.
Patricia continued.
“Your mother helped Robert arrange your disappearance seven years ago.””
Victoria began shaking her head.
“No. She visited my grave. She attended my funeral.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“I'm sorry, Victoria.””
She turned toward him.
“You knew?””
Richard nodded.
“Your mother was the one who gave Daniel the information he needed to separate you from Marcus.””
Victoria stumbled backward.
Marcus caught her.
But before anyone could speak, Danielle's phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
It contained a photograph of the white house.
Taken from across the street.
Below it were nine words:
*BRING THE ORIGINAL TRUST DOCUMENTS TO THE BLUE ROOM. ALONE.*
A second message arrived.
*OR NOAH WILL DISAPPEAR LIKE HIS MOTHER DID.*
Marcus immediately stood.
“Get Noah away from the windows.””
Patricia grabbed the little boy.
Victoria looked toward the street.
A black car had stopped outside.
May you like
Its headlights were off.
And someone inside was watching them.
