Chapter 2: The Secret Inside the Exhaust Hood

Danielle grabbed her phone with trembling fingers.

What do you mean? she typed.

The message showed as delivered.

No reply.

Ethan stood beside the bedroom door, holding the photograph.

“What's going on?”” he asked.

Danielle ignored him and hurried into the kitchen.

The exhaust hood was still open. Its metal casing had been removed, exposing a dark cavity filled with wires and dust.

She stared at it.

“Marcus knows something,” she whispered.

Ethan folded his arms.

“Obviously. But why would he tell you to check the hood?””

Danielle looked at the photograph again.

“Because he knows about Daniel.””

Ethan's expression hardened.

“Your brother-in-law?””

“Don't say his name so loudly.””

“Why? Is he going to appear through the ceiling?””

“Ethan!””

He raised both hands.

“Fine. But you need to tell me what's happening.””

Danielle placed the photograph on the counter.

“Daniel and I made a mistake.””

Ethan laughed without humor.

“A mistake? You told me your marriage was over.””

“It was.””

“Then why did you spend the last month telling me Marcus was working late, traveling, and barely paying attention to you?””

“Because I needed someone to talk to!””

Ethan shook his head.

“Danielle, you hired me to repair a kitchen hood. I didn't come here to become part of your family disaster.””

She looked away.

There was a time when Danielle had believed her marriage was perfect.

Marcus was successful, generous, and attentive. He had bought her the house, helped her open her small interior-design business, and never complained about her spending.

But three months earlier, things had changed.

Marcus began taking mysterious phone calls outside.

He started locking his office computer.

And he stopped telling her where he went after work.

Danielle had suspected another woman.

Daniel had been the one to comfort her.

Marcus's older brother had always been charming. He knew how to make people laugh, remembered birthdays, and could make a simple conversation feel intimate.

One evening, after Marcus canceled their anniversary dinner for a business meeting, Daniel showed up with flowers.

He told her she deserved better.

One conversation became several.

Several conversations became secret meetings.

And eventually, Danielle crossed a line she could never uncross.

But she hadn't expected to fall into another trap.

Daniel had promised to leave his wife.

Instead, he'd started asking Danielle for money.

First, it was a few thousand dollars for an emergency.

Then it was more.

Last week, he'd asked her to transfer $40,000 from the joint savings account.

She refused.

He became furious.

Now she was beginning to wonder whether the photograph was connected to that demand.

Ethan tapped the black envelope.

“There's something else inside.””

He turned it upside down.

A tiny silver key dropped onto the counter.

Danielle picked it up.

“What does this open?””

Ethan examined it.

“I don't know. It was taped inside the metal casing.””

Danielle looked toward the front door.

“Maybe Marcus hid something.””

“Or somebody else.””

She slipped the key into her pocket.

“Help me put everything back.””

Ethan stared at her.

“Are you serious?””

“Please. If Marcus comes back and sees this, he'll know.””

Ethan sighed and began collecting the screws.

They had barely reattached the metal panel when a car horn sounded outside.

Danielle froze.

A black SUV had stopped in front of the house.

Daniel stepped out.

He wore a navy suit and carried a leather briefcase.

Danielle's stomach tightened.

“What is he doing here?”” Ethan whispered.

“I don't know.””

Daniel knocked three times.

“Danielle! Open the door.””

She looked at Ethan.

“Go upstairs.””

“I'm not getting involved in this.””

“Then leave through the back.””

Ethan grabbed his toolbox.

“I'm leaving. But I'm telling you right now, whatever this is, it isn't going to end well.””

He slipped through the back door.

Danielle took a deep breath and opened the front door.

Daniel walked inside without waiting for an invitation.

“Where's Marcus?””

“Why?””

“Because I need to speak with him.””

Danielle folded her arms.

“He's at work.””

Daniel looked toward the kitchen.

“Who's been working on the exhaust hood?””

“A plumber.””

“Which plumber?””

“I don't know his last name.””

Daniel stared at her.

“That's careless.””

Danielle frowned.

“Why are you here?””

Daniel lowered his voice.

“Did you find it?””

“Find what?””

“The envelope.””

Danielle's heart skipped.

“What envelope?””

Daniel stepped closer.

“Don't play games with me. The envelope that was hidden inside the exhaust hood.””

She took a step backward.

“How do you know about that?””

Daniel's expression changed.

For the first time, his charming smile disappeared completely.

“Because I put it there.””

Danielle felt the floor shift beneath her.

“You?””

He nodded.

“I needed to make sure you found it before Marcus did.””

“Why would you put something in my kitchen?””

“Because I needed you to understand the situation.””

“What situation?””

Daniel placed his briefcase on the dining table and opened it.

Inside were several printed bank statements, photographs, and documents.

He pushed a photograph toward her.

It showed Marcus entering a hotel with a woman.

Danielle stared.

“Who's she?””

Daniel shrugged.

“Someone he's been seeing.””

Her mouth fell open.

“You're lying.””

“Am I?””

He pulled out another photograph.

This one showed Marcus and the woman sitting together in a restaurant. His hand rested on hers.

Danielle felt something hot rise behind her eyes.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

Daniel laughed.

“Because I wanted to be sure.””

“Sure of what?””

“That Marcus was planning to leave you.””

Danielle looked at the documents.

One page had the heading of a law firm.

Another contained a list of properties and bank accounts.

“What is this?””

Daniel leaned against the table.

“Your husband has been preparing for a divorce.””

She shook her head.

“No. He wouldn't.””

“He already spoke to a lawyer.””

Danielle picked up the bank statement.

A transfer of $250,000 had been made from an account she didn't recognize.

“What account is this?””

Daniel looked at her.

“That's the account he uses to hide money.””

Danielle's fingers began to shake.

“You said you put the envelope here to help me.””

“I did.””

“Then why didn't you just call?””

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

“Because your phone is monitored.””

The kitchen suddenly felt unbearably cold.

“Monitored by whom?””

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he reached into his briefcase and placed a second photograph on the table.

It showed Danielle and Daniel entering the same hotel.

The date was visible.

So was the hotel entrance.

Danielle looked up.

“Who took this?””

Daniel leaned closer.

“Marcus.””

She stepped back.

“No.””

“Yes.””

“That's impossible.””

Daniel gave her a cold smile.

“Your husband has known about us for weeks.””

Danielle's knees weakened.

“Then why did he kiss me this morning?””

Daniel shrugged.

“Maybe he wanted to see how long you'd keep lying.””

A strange silence settled over the room.

Then Danielle's phone rang.

Marcus.

She answered immediately.

“Baby?””

His voice sounded calm.

Too calm.

“Danielle, is Daniel there?””

She looked at the man standing in front of her.

“Why are you asking?””

“Because I just received a notification from the security system.””

Danielle's blood ran cold.

“What notification?””

Marcus paused.

“Someone entered our house through the front door at 10:42 a.m.””

Daniel slowly looked toward the ceiling.

Danielle whispered, “Marcus…”

Her husband continued.

“And before you ask, no, I wasn't talking about the plumber.””

She gripped the phone.

“What are you talking about?””

Marcus's voice dropped.

“I'm talking about the man who has been inside our house for the last twenty minutes.””

Daniel suddenly grabbed his briefcase.

“Hang up,” he mouthed.

But Marcus wasn't finished.

“Danielle, listen carefully. Don't let my brother leave.””

The call ended.

Danielle slowly lowered her phone.

Daniel stared at her.

Then he said something that made her blood run colder.

“Your husband doesn't know the worst part.””

He opened his briefcase again and removed a thick stack of legal documents.

“Because the woman in those photographs isn't his mistress.””

Danielle stared at him.

“Then who is she?””

May you like

Daniel looked toward the front door.

“She's the reason your husband married you in the first place.””
