Chapter 6: The Child Hidden Behind Her Own Marriage
Danielle dropped the birth certificate.
“No.””
Her voice was barely audible.
“No, that's not possible.””
Marcus picked up the document and examined it again.
The boy's name was printed clearly.
*Noah Brooks.*
Date of birth: six years earlier.
Mother: Danielle Brooks.
Father: Daniel Brooks.
Marcus looked at his wife.
“Danielle?””
She shook her head violently.
“That's fake.””
Victoria stared at her.
“Do you know this child?””
“No!””
Marcus turned the paper over.
A photograph had been attached to the back.
It showed a little boy sitting on a playground swing, wearing a blue jacket and holding a toy airplane.
Danielle covered her mouth.
She recognized him.
Not because she'd met him.
Because she'd seen that photograph before.
It had been on Daniel's phone.
He had once told her it was a picture of a friend's son.
She remembered asking why the boy looked so much like him.
Daniel had laughed.
“Lots of kids look like me.””
Danielle backed away from the suitcase.
“That's not mine.””
Marcus's voice became cold.
“Then why is your name on the certificate?””
“I don't know!””
“Did you ever have a child before we married?””
“No!””
Victoria picked up the second document.
“There's more.””
Inside the folder were hospital records, payment receipts, and a series of photographs.
The oldest receipt was dated six years earlier.
It showed a payment made to a private maternity clinic.
The amount was $18,500.
The account holder was Daniel Brooks.
Danielle stared at the document.
“I never went to that hospital.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Are you sure?””
“Of course I'm sure!””
She was breathing heavily now.
“Marcus, I have never had a child. You know that.””
He remembered.
They had tried for years to start a family.
They had attended fertility appointments.
They had cried together after negative pregnancy tests.
Danielle had told him repeatedly that she wanted to become a mother.
And now a birth certificate claimed she had given birth to Daniel's child.
It made no sense.
Victoria sat on an overturned storage box.
“Daniel told me he had a son.””
Marcus turned toward her.
“When?””
“About five years ago. He said the child's mother had abandoned him and that he was helping raise the boy.””
“Did he tell you the mother's name?””
Victoria shook her head.
“No. He said she didn't want to be involved.””
Danielle stared at the photograph.
“Where is Noah now?””
Victoria opened another folder.
A handwritten address was clipped to the front.
“According to this, he's living with a woman named Patricia Miller.””
Marcus took the paper.
“I know that name.””
Danielle looked at him.
“Who is she?””
“Daniel's former assistant.””
Victoria frowned.
“She worked for your family business?””
Marcus nodded.
“For nearly ten years.””
Danielle sat down.
Everything was becoming more confusing.
Marcus opened the old video camera.
A small memory card was still inside.
He pressed the power button.
The screen flickered.
A video appeared.
The date was six years earlier.
Daniel was sitting in a hospital room, holding a newborn baby.
A woman lay in the bed.
Her face was partly hidden by the blanket.
Daniel leaned toward the camera.
“If anyone ever watches this, remember that everything was done according to the agreement.””
The woman turned her head.
Her voice was weak.
“Daniel, please. I want to see my son.””
Daniel looked toward the camera.
“That's not part of the deal.””
The woman began crying.
“You promised me.””
Daniel switched off the camera.
The screen went black.
Danielle stared at it.
“Who was that woman?””
Marcus examined the video information.
“Patricia.””
Victoria shook her head.
“Then the birth certificate is fake.””
Danielle looked confused.
“What?””
Victoria explained.
“Patricia was Noah's biological mother. Daniel probably used your name on the paperwork to hide her identity.””
Marcus looked at the documents again.
“But why?””
Victoria pointed to another page.
It was a custody agreement.
Daniel had arranged for Patricia to surrender her parental rights in exchange for regular payments.
But the document contained something strange.
The legal guardian listed was not Daniel.
It was Danielle.
Danielle stood up.
“He put me down as the guardian?””
Marcus nodded slowly.
“Without your knowledge.””
Her hands began to shake.
“So if something happened to that child…”
“You would legally appear responsible,” Marcus finished.
Danielle stared at the papers.
Daniel hadn't simply used her money.
He had used her identity to create an entire false family.
Victoria searched the suitcase again.
“There's another envelope.””
She pulled out a white folder sealed with red tape.
The words on the front were written in Marcus's father's handwriting.
*FOR MARCUS. OPEN ONLY WHEN THE TRUTH IS KNOWN.*
Marcus tore it open.
Inside was a letter.
He read the first paragraph silently.
Then his face changed.
“What's wrong?”” Danielle asked.
Marcus didn't answer.
He read the next page.
His fingers tightened around the paper.
Finally, he lowered it.
“My father knew.””
Victoria stepped closer.
“Knew what?””
Marcus looked at her.
“He knew Daniel had been using false identities and moving money through different accounts.””
Danielle frowned.
“Then why didn't he stop him?””
Marcus continued reading.
“Because Daniel threatened to expose something about the family business.””
Victoria's eyes widened.
“What?””
Marcus looked at the last page.
His voice was barely audible.
“My father was involved.””
The storage unit fell silent.
He read the final paragraph.
*Marcus, if you are reading this, Daniel has probably gone too far. I tried to protect the family, but I made a terrible mistake. The company was built on money that never belonged to us.
Daniel knows where the original records are. Do not trust him. Do not trust anyone who claims to be protecting the Brooks name.*
Marcus folded the letter.
For years, he had believed his father was an honorable businessman.
Now he was discovering that the family fortune might have been built on fraud.
Danielle approached him.
“What are you going to do?””
Marcus looked toward the open storage unit.
“Find Patricia.””
Victoria nodded.
“She may know where Noah is.””
Marcus took out his phone.
Before he could dial, it rang.
An unknown number.
He answered.
“Hello?””
A woman's voice came through.
“Mr. Brooks?””
“Yes.””
“My name is Patricia Miller.””
Marcus looked at Danielle.
“I'm listening.””
There was a long pause.
Then Patricia spoke.
“I heard Daniel was arrested.””
Marcus tightened his grip on the phone.
“How did you hear that?””
“Someone called me.””
“Where's Noah?””
The woman began crying.
“He's safe.””
Marcus closed his eyes briefly.
“Can we meet?””
“I don't know if that's a good idea.””
“Please. We need to talk.””
Patricia hesitated.
Then she said something that made Marcus's stomach drop.
“There's something you need to understand about Noah.””
“What?””
“Daniel didn't put Danielle's name on those documents just to hide my identity.””
Marcus looked at his wife.
“What do you mean?””
Patricia's voice trembled.
“He told me that if anything happened to him, Danielle would be blamed for everything.””
Danielle shook her head.
“Why would he do that?””
Patricia continued.
“Because he has been preparing this for years.””
Marcus stared at the birth certificate.
“Preparing what?””
“To make your wife look like the mastermind behind his entire operation.””
The call ended.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Then Marcus's phone received a text.
It contained an address.
And one final sentence:
*Come alone. Daniel isn't the only one who knows where Noah is.*
Marcus showed the message to Victoria.
She read it twice.
Then she looked at Danielle.
“There's something else.””
Danielle swallowed.
“What?””
Victoria pointed to the folder.
A small photograph had slipped out from between the papers.
It showed a little boy standing beside a woman outside a school.
The boy was Noah.
The woman was Patricia.
But in the background, standing beside a black car, was another familiar figure.
Marcus slowly picked up the photograph.
His face turned white.
It was their father.
The man who had supposedly died six years earlier.
May you like
And beneath the photograph, in the same handwriting as the letter, were four words:
*HE IS STILL ALIVE.*
