Chapter 7: The Dead Man in the Photograph
Marcus stared at the photograph until the edges began to blur.
His father.
Standing beside Patricia and Noah.
Alive.
Six years after the family had buried him.
Six years after Marcus had stood beside a closed coffin, listening to relatives whisper about the sudden heart attack that had supposedly taken his father's life.
Six years after Daniel had inherited control of the family business.
“This is impossible,” Marcus whispered.
Victoria took the photograph from his hand.
“That's your father?””
Marcus nodded.
“I saw his body.””
“Are you absolutely sure?””
Marcus looked at her.
“I identified his watch. His wedding ring. Everything.””
Danielle stepped closer.
“Could it be someone who looks like him?””
Marcus shook his head.
“No. That's my father.””
He turned the photograph over.
A date was written in blue ink.
Four months earlier.
Danielle felt a chill.
“Someone has been seeing him recently.””
Marcus pulled out his phone and called the number Patricia had used.
It went straight to voicemail.
He tried again.
Nothing.
“She's not answering,” he said.
Victoria examined the photograph.
“Look at the building behind them.””
Marcus leaned closer.
It was an old brick building with a faded sign.
*RIVERSIDE RESIDENCE.*
Danielle recognized the name.
“Isn't that a retirement facility?””
Marcus nodded.
“Outside Chicago.””
“Then that's where we're going.””
Marcus looked at her.
“Danielle, this could be dangerous.””
“So could everything Daniel has done. I'm tired of sitting in rooms waiting for someone else to explain my life.””
Victoria nodded.
“She's right.””
They left the storage facility together.
The drive took nearly forty minutes.
Nobody spoke much.
Marcus kept glancing at the photograph on his passenger seat. Victoria watched the passing buildings. Danielle sat in the back, staring at the birth certificate with her name on it.
She couldn't stop thinking about Noah.
A little boy who had been dragged into a criminal scheme before he could even understand what a family meant.
When they arrived, Riverside Residence looked nothing like a hospital.
It was a modest private care facility surrounded by tall trees. A security guard sat inside the glass entrance.
Marcus approached the reception desk.
“I'm looking for a resident. His name is Richard Brooks.””
The receptionist typed something into her computer.
Then she stopped.
“I'm sorry. We don't have anyone by that name.””
Marcus showed her the photograph.
“I'm looking for this man.””
The receptionist glanced at the picture.
Her expression changed.
“Please wait here.””
She disappeared through a staff door.
Danielle looked at Marcus.
“She recognizes him.””
“I think so.””
A minute later, a tall woman in a white uniform returned.
“Mr. Brooks?””
“Yes.””
“There's someone who would like to speak with you. But I need you to understand that he doesn't receive visitors without prior approval.””
Marcus stepped forward.
“I'm his son.””
The woman studied his face.
Then she quietly opened the door.
They followed her down a long hallway.
At the end was a private room.
A television played quietly inside.
A man sat beside the window, wearing a gray sweater.
His hair had turned almost completely white.
His shoulders were thinner.
But when he turned around, Marcus recognized him instantly.
“Dad?””
Richard Brooks looked up.
For several seconds, neither man moved.
Then Richard stood.
“Marcus.””
Marcus crossed the room.
“What the hell is going on?””
Richard lowered his eyes.
“I knew you'd eventually find me.””
Marcus stepped back.
“You let us bury you.””
Richard's face tightened.
“I had no choice.””
“You let me mourn you!””
Victoria stood near the doorway, tears running down her cheeks.
Richard noticed her.
“Victoria.””
She shook her head.
“Don't.””
Richard lowered himself into his chair.
“I deserve that.””
Danielle remained silent.
Marcus pointed at the photograph.
“Why were you with Patricia?””
Richard rubbed his forehead.
“Because I was trying to protect Noah.””
Marcus stared.
“From Daniel?””
Richard nodded.
“Daniel became dangerous long before you realized it.””
“Then why did you let him take over the company?””
Richard looked toward the window.
“Because I was afraid.””
He explained that six years earlier, Daniel had discovered financial irregularities in the family business.
Richard had been moving money through several companies to cover losses caused by a failed investment.
Daniel threatened to expose him unless Richard transferred control of the business.
At first, Richard refused.
Then Daniel threatened to reveal that he had been using Victoria's pregnancy to blackmail Marcus.
Richard gave in.
But Daniel wanted more.
He wanted the company, the properties, and access to the family's accounts.
Eventually, Richard realized that his older son had become impossible to control.
“He arranged the accident,” Richard whispered.
Marcus went still.
“What accident?””
“The one that was supposed to kill me.””
Victoria covered her mouth.
Richard continued.
“I survived. But Daniel had already prepared the story. He had a doctor willing to falsify records and a funeral director willing to cooperate.””
Marcus shook his head.
“Why didn't you come to me?””
“Because Daniel told me he had people watching you. He said if I appeared, you would be next.””
Danielle stepped forward.
“Then why didn't you go to the police?””
Richard looked at her.
“Because I was guilty, too.””
Silence.
He reached beneath a drawer and removed a small envelope.
“This contains the original records. Every transfer. Every false company. Every person Daniel paid.””
Marcus took it.
“Is this enough to put him away?””
Richard nodded.
“If the documents are still intact.””
Marcus opened the envelope.
Inside was a small USB drive.
Richard pointed to it.
“The most important evidence is there.””
Victoria stepped closer.
“What about Noah?””
Richard's expression softened.
“He's a good boy.””
“Where is he?””
“Patricia moved him after Daniel began asking questions. She was afraid he'd use the child to control her.””
Marcus looked down.
“I want to meet him.””
Richard nodded.
“You should.””
Then he reached for Marcus's hand.
“There's something else you need to know.””
Marcus waited.
Richard looked toward Danielle.
“Daniel didn't choose Danielle randomly.””
Danielle felt her stomach tighten.
“What does that mean?””
Richard took a slow breath.
“Six years ago, before Marcus married you, Daniel discovered something about your family.””
“My family?””
Richard nodded.
“Your mother worked for our company. She was one of the accountants who uncovered the missing money.””
Danielle stared.
Her mother had died when she was twenty-four.
She had never known much about her mother's employment history.
Richard continued.
“She found evidence that Daniel had been stealing from the company. She confronted him. A few months later, she died in a car accident.””
Danielle grabbed the back of the chair.
“What are you saying?””
Richard looked devastated.
“I'm saying Daniel may have been involved.””
The room seemed to tilt.
Danielle whispered, “No.””
Richard reached for another document.
“Your mother left something behind. Daniel never found it.””
He handed her a small photograph.
It showed Danielle as a child, standing beside her mother in front of a house.
On the back, her mother had written:
If anything happens to me, ask Richard Brooks about the blue room.
Danielle stared at the words.
“What blue room?””
Richard looked toward the door.
“The room Daniel has spent six years trying to find.””
Before anyone could ask another question, the facility's fire alarm began screaming.
The receptionist shouted from the hallway.
“Everyone out! Now!””
Marcus rushed to the window.
A black SUV was parked outside.
Two men stepped out.
One held a camera.
The other held a metal object that looked like a weapon.
Richard's face drained of color.
“They found me.””
Marcus turned.
“Who?””
Richard grabbed his arm.
“Daniel's men.””
A loud crash came from the hallway.
Then the door handle began turning.
Victoria screamed.
Marcus shoved the USB drive into his pocket.
“Everybody move!””
But before they could reach the emergency exit, Richard whispered something that stopped Marcus cold.
“Son, there's one person you haven't considered.””
Marcus turned.
Richard looked directly at him.
“The man who helped Daniel fake my death is your mother's brother.””
And at that exact moment, Danielle's phone rang.
May you like
The caller ID displayed a name she hadn't seen in twelve years.
*UNCLE ROBERT.*
