Chapter 9: The Truth About My Mother's Last Promise
My father didn't respond immediately.
He simply stared at Vanessa.
"What exactly are you threatening to tell people?""
Vanessa smiled faintly.
"Perhaps you should think about that before refusing my settlement.""
Dad stepped away from the door.
"Michael, call Mr. Bennett.""
Vanessa's expression changed.
"Why are you calling a lawyer?""
"Because you've just threatened to make allegations about my late wife in exchange for money.""
She laughed.
"You're being dramatic.""
"No. I'm documenting everything.""
Madison and Tyler stood near the staircase, looking confused.
I moved closer to them.
"Come upstairs with me.""
Vanessa immediately turned.
"Madison, Tyler, stay here.""
Dad raised his hand.
"Let the children go upstairs. This is an adult conversation.""
Vanessa stared at him.
Then she released a frustrated breath.
"Fine.""
I took Madison's hand and led her upstairs.
Tyler followed.
Once we reached my bedroom, Madison sat on the bed.
"Mom is really angry," she whispered.
I nodded.
"Does she tell you what's happening?""
Madison shook her head.
"She just says Dad has become selfish.""
Tyler looked up.
"Are we going to live here again?""
I smiled sadly.
"I hope so.""
Madison hugged me.
"I don't want you to hate us.""
I wrapped my arms around her.
"I could never hate you.""
A few minutes later, we heard Uncle Michael arrive.
Then we heard several voices downstairs.
I couldn't make out every word, but one sentence was clear.
"Vanessa, you need to explain why you believe you're entitled to $150,000.""
It was Mr. Bennett.
I sat beside Madison and listened.
Downstairs, Vanessa's voice became defensive.
"Daniel promised to provide for me when we married.""
Mr. Bennett answered calmly.
"Providing for your household is not the same as giving you ownership of another person's inheritance.""
"That girl has more money than she'll ever need!""
I closed my eyes.
Madison looked at me.
"She's talking about your money again.""
I nodded.
Then Vanessa said something that made me stand.
"Emma's mother wasn't as innocent as everyone thinks.""
I heard my father respond.
"Don't you dare.""
Vanessa continued.
"She made promises. She manipulated everyone around her. You think she left you everything because she loved you?""
Dad's voice became cold.
"Stop talking about my wife.""
"Why? Because you don't want people knowing the truth?""
Mr. Bennett interrupted.
"Mrs. Carter, if you have evidence of wrongdoing, you may present it through the proper legal process. But making accusations to pressure your husband into paying you money is inappropriate.""
There was a long silence.
Then Dad spoke.
"Vanessa, what do you know about my wife's final days?""
I opened my bedroom door slightly.
Vanessa answered.
"I know she made sure you would never have anything that belonged to her.""
Dad laughed bitterly.
"That's what you think?""
He walked toward the fireplace.
I heard him open a drawer.
Then he returned with a small wooden box.
I recognized it immediately.
It had belonged to my mother.
Dad placed it on the dining table.
"Your mother left this with me," he said, looking toward the staircase.
I slowly came downstairs.
Madison and Tyler followed.
Dad opened the box.
Inside was a collection of old photographs, a gold necklace, several letters, and a small envelope bearing my name.
He held the envelope carefully.
"This was written by your mother shortly before she died.""
My eyes filled with tears.
"Can I read it?""
Dad nodded.
I took the letter.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
My beautiful Emma,
If you're reading this, it means you're old enough to understand how much I love you.
I cannot promise that life will always be easy. I cannot promise that everyone you meet will treat you kindly.
But I want you to remember something.
You never have to become smaller to make someone else feel important.
You deserve a home where you are welcomed, a family where you are respected, and a life where you never have to beg for love.
The things I leave behind are only meant to help you build that life. They are not the reason you are valuable.
You are my greatest treasure.
Love always, Mom.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
Tears rolled down my cheeks.
Dad placed a hand on my shoulder.
"She wanted you to know that.""
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
"That's very touching. But it doesn't change the fact that I deserve compensation.""
Mr. Bennett shook his head.
"Mrs. Carter, this is not a compensation matter.""
Vanessa pointed at Dad.
"Three years! I gave three years of my life to this marriage!""
Dad looked at her.
"And I gave you my trust.""
He picked up another document from the wooden box.
"This is the original trust agreement. It clearly states that Emma is the sole beneficiary. It also confirms that no spouse or household member has any right to access the assets.""
Vanessa stared at it.
"That's impossible.""
Mr. Bennett examined the document.
"Actually, it's quite clear.""
Then Dad removed a final envelope.
It contained an old photograph of my mother standing beside a woman I recognized as my grandmother.
Behind the photograph was a handwritten note.
Dad read it aloud.
"Daniel, if anything happens to me, please make sure Emma is protected. I know you will love her, but I worry that one day someone might make her feel like she doesn't belong because she carries my name.""
Dad stopped.
His voice broke.
I reached for his hand.
Vanessa stared at the photograph.
For the first time, she had nothing to say.
Then Madison stepped forward.
"Mom?""
Vanessa turned.
"What?""
Madison's eyes were wet.
"Why did you give Emma that old shirt?""
Vanessa looked at her daughter.
"Madison, not now.""
"But why?""
Tyler joined her.
"She didn't do anything wrong.""
Vanessa's face reddened.
"Both of you, go upstairs!""
Madison shook her head.
"No. I want to know.""
She looked at me.
"Emma shared her birthday cake with me when I didn't have any friends. She helped me with homework. She gave me her favorite bracelet when I lost mine.""
Vanessa stared at her.
Madison continued.
"Why did you treat her like she wasn't part of our family?""
Nobody moved.
My father looked at Madison with sadness.
Then he gently said, "You don't have to be afraid to ask questions, sweetheart.""
Vanessa grabbed her handbag.
"I'm leaving.""
Mr. Bennett stood.
"Mrs. Carter, before you go, I need to inform you that any further attempt to access the trust or sell the property will be formally challenged.""
She ignored him.
She walked toward the door, but Madison didn't follow.
"Madison," she called.
Her daughter looked at me.
Then she looked at her mother.
"Can I stay here tonight?""
Vanessa froze.
"What did you say?""
"I want to stay with Dad and Emma.""
Tyler stepped forward.
"Me too.""
Vanessa looked between them, her face filled with disbelief.
"You would choose them over your own mother?""
Madison started crying.
"I don't want to choose anyone. I just want us to stop fighting.""
Vanessa opened the door.
But before she left, she turned toward my father.
"You're going to regret this, Daniel.""
He looked at her.
"Perhaps. But I'll never regret protecting my daughter.""
The door closed.
For the first time in months, our house was quiet.
Dad hugged me.
Madison and Tyler joined us.
We stood together in the dining room, holding one another.
Then Dad's phone rang.
It was Mr. Bennett.
He had stepped outside to make another call.
"Daniel," he said, "I've just received something from the bank.""
Dad straightened.
"What is it?""
"A document connected to Vanessa's attempted transfer.""
"What does it show?""
Mr. Bennett paused.
Then he said:
"It appears Richard wasn't simply helping her move money. He may have been preparing to use your daughter's property as security for a business loan.""
Dad looked at me.
I felt my stomach drop.
Because the property my mother had left me wasn't just something Vanessa had wanted to sell.
May you like
She had nearly used it to secure a debt that didn't belong to our family.
And now, my father was determined to find out exactly how far the two of them had gone.
