Chapter 7: The Secret My Mother Left Behind

My father's hands were trembling.

I had never seen him look so frightened.

He stood beside the dining room window, holding Vanessa's letter in one hand and staring at the photograph of my mother on the fireplace.

"Emma, sweetheart, sit down.""

I slowly pulled out a chair.

"What does Mom have to do with this?""

Dad sat opposite me.

"Before your mother died, she left something for you. Something she wanted you to receive when you turned eighteen.""

I frowned.

"What thing?""

"An inheritance.""

I stared at him.

"Mom left me money?""

He nodded.

"Your grandfather established a trust in your mother's name. When she passed away, the assets were transferred into a separate account for your future.""

I tried to understand.

"How much?""

Dad hesitated.

"Originally, it was worth approximately $240,000. There was also a small property your mother inherited from her parents.""

My mouth fell open.

"Two hundred and forty thousand?""

"Yes.""

I looked at the photograph of my mother.

"Why didn't you tell me?""

"Because I wanted you to grow up without feeling that money defined your life. Your mother wanted you to have a normal childhood. She specifically asked me not to discuss the inheritance until you were old enough to understand what it meant.""

I looked down at my hands.

"Does Vanessa know about it?""

Dad nodded slowly.

"She found out about the trust shortly after we married. I explained that the money belonged to you and was protected for your future.""

My stomach tightened.

"And she was angry?""

"She asked whether we could use some of it to improve the house. I told her no.""

I remembered something.

"Is that why she always hated me?""

Dad's eyes softened.

"I don't know, sweetheart. But I should have investigated sooner.""

He opened his briefcase and removed a folder.

Inside were several financial documents.

"After Vanessa's letter, I contacted the trust administrator this morning. I wanted to confirm that everything was still in order.""

He placed a statement in front of me.

My eyes moved across the page.

There were several withdrawals listed.

$12,000.

$8,500.

$15,000.

And another for $20,000.

I looked up.

"Dad, what are these?""

His expression hardened.

"That's exactly what I'm trying to find out.""

He picked up his phone and called someone.

"Good morning, Mr. Harris. This is Daniel Carter. I need an urgent review of my daughter's trust.""

He listened.

"Yes. There are transactions I don't recognize.""

Another pause.

"Can you confirm who authorized them?""

His face changed.

"You're telling me someone attempted to access the account?""

He stood.

"When?""

I watched him pace across the room.

"Send me the authorization records immediately. And freeze any pending transactions until we establish who has legal authority.""

He ended the call.

I could barely speak.

"Did Vanessa take my money?""

Dad sat beside me.

"We don't know yet. But we're going to find out.""

That afternoon, we met with the trust administrator, Mr. Harris, at his office.

He was a middle-aged man with silver hair and a serious expression.

He placed several documents on his desk.

"Mr. Carter, the trust has remained largely untouched for years. However, someone recently submitted a request to transfer a portion of the funds.""

Dad leaned forward.

"Who submitted it?""

Mr. Harris adjusted his glasses.

"Mrs. Carter.""

"Vanessa?""

"Yes. She claimed she was acting with your authorization.""

Dad's expression darkened.

"She never had my authorization.""

Mr. Harris nodded.

"That's why the transfer was flagged. The signature on the document did not match the signature we have on file.""

I stared at the paperwork.

"Did she get any money?""

"Fortunately, the transfer was stopped.""

I released a breath I hadn't realized I was holding.

But Mr. Harris wasn't finished.

"There's another issue.""

Dad looked at him.

"What?""

"Mrs. Carter also requested information about the property held in the trust. She asked whether it could be sold before Emma turns eighteen.""

Dad slowly leaned back.

"She wanted to sell my daughter's property?""

Mr. Harris nodded.

"She was informed that she had no authority to do so.""

I felt sick.

All those years, I had thought Vanessa simply didn't like me.

I had never imagined that she might have been interested in something my mother had left behind.

On the drive home, Dad kept both hands firmly on the steering wheel.

I stared out the window.

"Dad?""

"Yes?""

"Did she marry you because of Mom's money?""

He glanced at me.

"I don't want to believe that.""

"But why would she try to take it?""

He sighed.

"Sometimes people become so focused on what they think they're entitled to that they forget what belongs to someone else.""

When we arrived home, Uncle Michael was waiting in the driveway.

He had a folder under his arm.

"Daniel, we need to talk.""

Dad stepped out of the car.

"Did you find something?""

Michael nodded.

"Richard isn't just Vanessa's financial adviser.""

Dad's expression changed.

"What do you mean?""

Michael opened the folder.

"He runs a company that has been struggling financially. And according to records I've been able to verify, Vanessa recently transferred money to one of his business accounts.""

Dad stared at him.

"How much?""

Michael handed him a printed statement.

"Twenty-seven thousand dollars.""

I watched my father's face turn pale.

"That money came from my household account?""

Michael nodded.

"Some of it did.""

Dad looked toward the house.

Then he whispered, "She wasn't just neglecting Emma.""

He turned toward me.

"She was stealing from the family.""

But Uncle Michael shook his head.

"There's something worse, Daniel.""

He opened another document.

It was a photograph of a signed agreement.

And at the bottom was Vanessa's signature.
