Chapter 1: The Clothes That Exposed Her Cruelty

My stepmother spent nearly $10,000 buying new clothes, shoes, and accessories for her two children. But when it came to me, she handed me a single worn-out shirt and told me to be grateful.

She thought my father would never find out.

She was wrong.

The Saturday morning everything changed began with a delivery truck pulling into our driveway.

I was standing in the kitchen when my younger stepsister, Madison, came running downstairs in her pajamas.

"Mom! Is my new wardrobe here?"" she shouted.

My stepmother, Vanessa, immediately abandoned the breakfast she was preparing.

"Yes, sweetheart! Everything you picked out has arrived.""

Madison squealed and ran toward the front door.

Her younger brother, Tyler, followed, practically jumping with excitement.

I watched them carry boxes into the living room. There were designer sneakers, expensive jackets, dresses, handbags, and several shopping bags from stores I had only ever seen in advertisements.

Vanessa laughed as she helped them unpack.

"Careful with that dress, Madison. It's the one you wanted for the school dance.""

"Mom, look at these shoes!"" Tyler shouted.

"Those are yours, darling. I bought you two pairs.""

I stood quietly near the doorway.

For a moment, I imagined what it would feel like to have someone buy something special just because they wanted to see me smile.

I hadn't received new clothes in almost two years.

My school shoes had a small hole near the sole. My jeans were faded at the knees, and most of my shirts had become too short.

I had asked Vanessa several times whether I could get a few new things.

Every time, she had the same answer.

"There's no money for unnecessary shopping.""

Yet the living room now looked like a department store.

I approached her carefully.

"Vanessa?""

She didn't look up.

"What?""

"Could I maybe get one new pair of shoes? Mine are starting to fall apart.""

She stopped folding Madison's new sweater and looked at my shoes.

Then she laughed.

"You're still wearing those?""

I lowered my eyes.

"They're uncomfortable, and my socks get wet when it rains.""

Vanessa sighed dramatically.

"Your father gives me money for the household. I can't spend everything on shopping.""

I glanced at the mountain of bags.

"But you just bought—"

"Don't start comparing yourself to my children," she interrupted.

"They need these things.""

I swallowed.

"I need shoes too.""

She placed Madison's sweater on the sofa and walked toward the hallway.

"Go upstairs. I'll see what I can find.""

I waited.

A few minutes later, she returned holding a thin plastic bag.

Inside was a faded blue singlet.

It was old, stretched around the neckline, and had a small tear near the bottom.

She tossed it onto my arms.

"Here. This should be enough.""

I stared at it.

"Is this for me?""

"Obviously.""

"But it's too small.""

"Then lose some weight.""

My face burned.

"Vanessa, I don't think I can wear this to school.""

She folded her arms.

"Nobody is forcing you to wear it. But don't expect me to waste money on you.""

Madison walked past us carrying a pair of new sneakers.

She glanced at the singlet and giggled.

"Mom, is that seriously what she's getting?""

Vanessa laughed.

"Not everyone gets to have everything, sweetheart.""

I stood there holding the little piece of fabric while they returned to unpacking their purchases.

That evening, I sat on my bedroom floor and examined the singlet again.

I wasn't crying because it was old.

I was crying because I remembered how things used to be.

My mother had died when I was eight. Before she passed away, she used to take me shopping every year before school started. She would let me choose my favorite colors, even when we couldn't afford expensive brands.

After her death, my father, Daniel, became my entire world.

He worked long hours as a construction company owner, but he always made time for me.

When he married Vanessa three years later, I was happy.

She smiled at me, hugged me, and promised that I would never feel like an outsider.

"You're my little girl now," she had told me during their wedding reception.

I had believed her.

But after Madison and Tyler were born, everything changed.

Vanessa began treating me like an unwanted guest.

My father noticed some things, but whenever he asked, she always had an explanation.

"Your daughter is difficult.""

"She's becoming a teenager.""

"She doesn't appreciate what I do.""

And because I didn't want to destroy his marriage, I stayed quiet.

That night, I heard the front door open.

My father was home.

"Where's my princess?"" he called.

I quickly wiped my cheeks and walked downstairs.

"Hi, Dad.""

He smiled and opened his arms.

"There's my girl. How was school?""

"Fine.""

He studied my face.

"Why do you look sad?""

"I'm just tired.""

He touched my shoulder.

"Did you get everything you needed for school?""

I hesitated.

Before I could answer, Vanessa appeared from the kitchen.

"Of course she did," she said brightly.

"I've been taking care of everything.""

My father nodded.

"Good. I transferred the household money this morning. There should be enough for groceries, the children's needs, and anything else.""

Vanessa smiled.

"Thank you, honey.""

Then she kissed his cheek.

I watched her, wondering how someone could lie so comfortably.

Later, Dad went upstairs to shower.

I returned to my room, but I accidentally left the singlet on the edge of my bed.

A few minutes later, I heard his footsteps.

"Sweetheart, have you seen my—"

His voice suddenly stopped.

I turned around.

He was holding the faded singlet between his fingers.

"What is this?""

I froze.

"Nothing, Dad.""

He examined the torn fabric.

"Why is this in your room?""

I looked at the floor.

"Vanessa gave it to me.""

His eyebrows drew together.

"She bought you this?""

I shook my head.

"She said it was something she found.""

He looked around my room.

Then he noticed my shoes beside the wardrobe.

The soles were almost detached.

He picked one up.

"How long have you been wearing these?""

I couldn't answer.

"Sweetheart, look at me.""

My eyes filled with tears.

"I didn't want to bother you, Dad.""

His expression changed.

"Bother me?""

I nodded.

"Vanessa said you work hard and that I shouldn't keep asking for things.""

He stood silently for several seconds.

Then he gently took my hand.

"Come downstairs with me.""

In the dining room, Vanessa was arranging flowers in a vase. Madison and Tyler were watching television.

My father placed the singlet on the table.

"Vanessa, where did this come from?""

She glanced at it.

"Oh, that? I gave it to her.""

"Why?""

"Because she needed something to wear.""

Daniel stared at her.

"Something to wear? Is this what you've been providing for my daughter?""

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"Don't make a scene, Daniel.""

He reached into his pocket and took out his phone.

"Then perhaps you can explain something else to me.""

He turned the screen toward her.

It showed the monthly household transfers he had been making.

"Where has all this money been going?""

May you like

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

And when Daniel opened the bank statement attached to the transfer history, his next question made her face turn completely white.
