Chapter 3: The Rules She Thought Would Break Him

The document was three pages long.

My father read every line without saying a word.

Vanessa stood in front of him with her arms folded, looking unusually confident.

"What exactly is this?"" he finally asked.

"It's simple," she replied.

"If you're going to spend your money on your daughter, then I want the same arrangement for my children.""

Daniel looked down again.

The agreement proposed that he would pay all expenses for Madison and Tyler, including clothing, education, activities, and personal purchases.

In return, I would receive nothing from Vanessa.

Nothing.

Not food prepared by her, not clothing, not transportation, and not even a share of household supplies.

My father slowly placed the paper on the table.

"You want to make a child responsible for the financial consequences of an argument between adults?""

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

"Don't twist my words. Your daughter is your responsibility. My children are mine.""

"Then why are you asking me to pay for your children?""

"Because we're married!""

Daniel leaned back.

"Interesting. So when you want something, we're one family. But when my daughter needs something, suddenly we're strangers.""

Vanessa's lips tightened.

"That's not fair.""

He pointed toward the document.

"This agreement says she won't be entitled to anything from you, even basic household support.""

"I didn't write that to hurt her.""

"Then why did you write it?""

She looked away.

I was standing near the staircase, holding a glass of water.

I hadn't intended to listen, but I couldn't make myself walk away.

Vanessa noticed me.

"She's listening again.""

Dad turned around.

"She's allowed to be in her own home.""

Vanessa gave a bitter laugh.

"See? This is exactly the problem. Everything revolves around her now.""

I placed my glass on the nearest table.

"Vanessa, I don't want to cause problems.""

She looked directly at me.

"Then stop causing them.""

My father immediately stood up.

"Don't speak to her like that.""

Vanessa pointed at me.

"She gets everything now! New clothes, new shoes, special treatment. Meanwhile, my children are being punished because you suddenly feel guilty.""

Dad's jaw tightened.

"Your children are not being punished. They have everything they need.""

"Then why did Madison have to wait for her new tablet?""

"Because I haven't decided whether she needs one.""

Vanessa stared at him.

"She needs it for school!""

"Then send me the school's requirements. I'll pay for an appropriate device.""

Vanessa opened her mouth, but no words came out.

My father folded the document.

"I'm not signing this.""

She snatched it from his hand.

"Fine! But don't expect me to keep doing everything around here.""

Daniel nodded.

"Then let's discuss household responsibilities fairly.""

For the first time, Vanessa looked uncertain.

The following Monday, Dad made an announcement over breakfast.

"From now on, I'll be handling the children's clothing and school expenses directly.""

Madison looked up.

"Does that mean I can't buy anything anymore?""

"No, sweetheart," Dad said gently.

"It means we'll discuss what you need before buying it.""

Tyler frowned.

"What about my new gaming console?""

"We'll see.""

Vanessa dropped her spoon.

"Daniel, you cannot suddenly change everything!""

He took a sip of coffee.

"I can change how I spend my own earnings.""

She glared at him.

"You're embarrassing me in front of the children.""

"No. I'm explaining the household budget.""

Then he turned toward me.

"Sweetheart, your new school shoes are arriving today. Make sure you try them on before we remove the tags.""

I smiled.

"Okay, Dad.""

Vanessa looked at me as if my smile were an insult.

Later that afternoon, I returned from school and found Madison sitting on the stairs.

She was holding one of her new dresses.

"Hey," I said softly.

She didn't answer.

"Are you okay?""

She looked at me.

"Mom says Dad doesn't love us anymore.""

I sat beside her.

"That's not true.""

"Then why is he buying you everything?""

I considered my answer.

"Because he realized I needed things too. It doesn't mean you don't matter.""

Madison looked down at her dress.

"Mom says you're trying to take her place.""

My stomach tightened.

"I don't want to take anyone's place.""

She stared at me for a moment.

Then she whispered, "I know.""

Before I could say anything else, Vanessa appeared at the top of the stairs.

"Madison! Why are you sitting with her?""

Madison quickly stood up.

"Nothing, Mom.""

"Come here.""

She grabbed her daughter's hand and pulled her toward the hallway.

I remained seated, wondering how long this situation could continue.

That evening, my father returned home carrying two large grocery bags.

He placed them on the kitchen counter.

"Where's everyone?""

"In the living room," I replied.

He looked at me.

"Have you eaten?""

"Not yet.""

"Good. Let's make something together.""

We prepared chicken, roasted potatoes, and vegetables.

Dad let me season everything, even though I accidentally added too much pepper.

He laughed.

"Your mother used to do exactly that.""

I smiled.

"Really?""

"Every single time. Then she'd insist the recipe was supposed to be spicy.""

For a moment, the kitchen felt warm again.

Then Vanessa walked in.

She opened the refrigerator and frowned.

"Why did you buy all this food?""

"Because the refrigerator was nearly empty," Dad answered.

"There's food for my children in there too.""

"Yes. That's generally how groceries work.""

She slammed the refrigerator door.

"Don't be sarcastic.""

Dad continued chopping vegetables.

Vanessa noticed the new clothes hanging over a chair.

"Must be nice to have money thrown at you.""

I lowered my head.

Dad put down the knife.

"Vanessa, we're not doing this again.""

She stepped closer.

"You've spent more on her in one week than you used to spend on the entire household.""

"Because she had years of needs that were ignored.""

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

"You're making me sound like some terrible woman.""

Dad looked straight at her.

"I'm asking you to look at the evidence instead of blaming a child.""

She stormed out.

I thought that would be the end of it.

I was wrong.

The next morning, my father received a call from the school.

I was in my room when he walked through the front door earlier than usual.

He looked furious.

"Where's Vanessa?""

I came downstairs.

"She's in her bedroom.""

He walked straight toward the staircase.

"Vanessa! Come downstairs. Now!""

She appeared a minute later, holding her phone.

"What happened?""

Dad held up a printed email.

"Why did you tell the school that I refused to pay my daughter's activity fees?""

Vanessa blinked.

"What?""

"The school contacted me because someone called pretending to be you. They were told I had withdrawn financial support for her education.""

Vanessa's face went pale.

"I don't know what you're talking about.""

Dad showed her the email.

"The school also received a request to remove her as an authorized emergency contact.""

My heart began pounding.

I looked at Vanessa.

"Why would you do that?""

She turned toward me.

"Stay out of this.""

Dad stepped between us.

"Who made that call?""

Vanessa's eyes moved from the email to my father's face.

Then she said something that made the blood drain from mine.

"I was only trying to make you understand what happens when you choose one child over the others.""

Dad stared at her.

"You used my daughter's education to punish me?""

Vanessa folded her arms.

"Maybe now you'll finally listen.""

My father took a slow breath.

Then he pulled another sheet of paper from his briefcase.

"There's something you don't know, Vanessa.""

She frowned.

"What?""

He placed the document on the dining table.

And when she read the name printed at the top, her hands began to shake.

Because it wasn't a household budget.

May you like

It was a record of every dollar he had transferred to her over the last three years.

And the final page contained a transaction she had never expected him to discover.
