Chapter 9: The Warehouse Trap

The old Bennett warehouse had been empty for nearly five years.

Daniel's company had used it to store construction materials before moving its operations to a newer facility on the outskirts of the city. The building was scheduled for demolition, and only a handful of people still had access to its security system.

At 8:17 p.m., Daniel received another message.

Bring the original agreement. Come alone.

He showed it to Detective Harris.

“Absolutely not,” she said.

“I'm not going to walk into a trap without a plan.””

“Then don't walk into it at all.””

Daniel looked through the living room window. Rebecca was sitting with Noah, Lily, and Sophie, helping them assemble a puzzle.

Noah had insisted on keeping his bedroom door open. Every few minutes, he checked whether Daniel was still downstairs.

“I need to know who's behind this,” Daniel said.

“And we need to make sure you don't become another victim.””

Detective Harris explained that her team could establish surveillance around the warehouse. Daniel would not be expected to enter the building without officers nearby.

“Do you have a copy of the agreement?”” she asked.

“Yes.””

“Bring that. Keep the original here.””

Daniel nodded.

Before leaving, he went upstairs to speak to Noah.

The boy was sitting on the bed, holding his stuffed dog.

“Are you going somewhere?””

Daniel sat beside him.

“I need to help the police with something.””

“Is it about Mom?””

Daniel knew which mother he meant.

“It's about making sure everyone is safe.””

Noah looked frightened.

“Can you stay?””

The question stopped Daniel.

He could hear Emily's voice in his memory, reminding him that Noah had never needed a perfect father. He had needed one who showed up.

Daniel sat back down.

“I'm going to make a phone call first. Then I'll decide what to do.””

He called his business partner and asked him to meet the police at the warehouse as a witness. He also contacted his attorney and explained the threat.

By the time he finished, Detective Harris had arranged a surveillance team and a secure communication line.

Daniel returned to Noah's room.

“I'm staying until you're asleep,” he promised.

Noah relaxed slightly.

“Can you tell me a story?””

Daniel smiled.

“What kind?””

“The one Mom used to tell me. About the little fox who got lost.””

Daniel swallowed.

He knew the story. Emily had invented it one night when Noah was afraid of the dark. The fox wandered away from its den, met a storm, and spent the night hiding beneath a fallen tree. In the morning, it followed the sound of its mother's voice home.

Daniel told the story slowly, adding the familiar details.

When he finished, Noah's eyes were closed.

Daniel kissed his forehead.

“Goodnight, buddy.””

He waited another ten minutes before leaving the room.

Then he headed for the warehouse.

At 9:06 p.m., Daniel's SUV rolled into the deserted industrial lot.

Rain tapped against the windshield. The building's broken exterior lights cast long shadows across the pavement.

Detective Harris spoke through the discreet earpiece he wore.

“Stay near the entrance. Our team has the perimeter covered.””

Daniel stepped out with a folder tucked beneath his coat.

The warehouse door stood open.

Inside, a single overhead light flickered above a metal table.

A man stood beside it.

Daniel recognized him immediately.

Michael Cole.

Vanessa's former husband.

The man had appeared in company photographs years earlier, when he and Vanessa were briefly involved in a failed property partnership. Daniel had assumed Michael moved out of state after the business collapsed.

“What do you want?”” Daniel asked.

Michael smiled without warmth.

“The agreement.””

Daniel held up the folder.

“First, tell me why you're threatening my family.””

“Your family?”” Michael laughed.

“You mean the family Vanessa built while you were busy playing grieving widower?””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Don't talk about Emily.””

“Why not? She was the one who started this mess.””

Michael stepped closer.

“She believed she could fix everything by keeping secrets. She believed money and lawyers could make people behave. But she was wrong.””

Daniel studied him.

“Where is Vanessa?””

“Not your concern.””

“She sent you here.””

Michael's smile widened.

“Vanessa doesn't send me anywhere. We have an arrangement.””

Daniel felt a chill.

“What arrangement?””

Michael tapped the folder.

“You give me the agreement, and I tell you where Claire was hiding.””

Daniel's pulse quickened.

“Claire is with the police.””

“Is she?”” Michael asked.

“Then perhaps you should ask them why they haven't told you everything.””

Daniel kept his expression neutral.

“I'm listening.””

Michael leaned against the table.

“Claire didn't simply disappear. She left because she knew she was in danger. Vanessa helped her leave, but only after Claire agreed to surrender her parental rights to Lily.””

Daniel stared at him.

“That's not what Claire told us.””

“Claire tells whatever story makes her feel better.””

Michael pulled a folded document from his pocket.

“Here's the problem. The adoption arrangements were never finalized, and Vanessa realized she could use that uncertainty to her advantage. She married you, became Lily's stepmother, and gained access to a household where the truth could remain buried.””

Daniel felt sick.

“Why?””

Michael's eyes narrowed.

“Because your first wife had discovered something about the trust.””

The warehouse seemed to grow colder.

“What did Emily discover?””

Michael glanced toward the ceiling.

“Your company transferred money into a family account years ago. Emily noticed the records didn't match the legal documents. She began asking questions.””

Daniel frowned.

“What transfers?””

Michael's smile disappeared.

“You don't know?””

“No.””

For the first time, Michael seemed genuinely surprised.

Then he recovered.

“Maybe Vanessa was right. Maybe you really were too distracted to notice anything.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Explain the money.””

Michael shook his head.

“Not until I have the agreement.””

Daniel placed the folder on the table but kept his hand on it.

“You said you would tell me where Claire was hiding.””

“I did.””

“She's with the police. I want to know what happened before she disappeared.””

Michael's face hardened.

“Claire found out Vanessa was moving money through an account in Lily's name. She threatened to expose it. Vanessa panicked, and I helped her get Claire out of the city.””

Daniel stared at him.

“You helped her disappear?””

“We gave her money. We arranged transportation. We made sure she wouldn't come back.””

“And you call that helping?””

Michael shrugged.

“She was alive. That's more than most people could say.””

Daniel felt a surge of anger, but he forced himself to remain still.

“Did Vanessa know about the threats made against Noah?””

Michael laughed.

“Vanessa knew everything about Noah.””

Daniel's blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

Michael leaned forward.

“Your son was the one person Emily trusted to inherit the truth. She left records that could expose everything. Vanessa spent years trying to find them.””

Daniel remembered the hidden agreement and the letters Margaret had preserved.

“Where are the records?””

Michael pointed toward the folder.

“That's what I want to know.””

Daniel looked at the document.

It was only a copy.

The original remained safely locked in his home, exactly as Detective Harris had advised.

“You're not getting anything from me until you explain the messages about my son.””

Michael's expression changed.

“You really should have stayed out of this.””

He reached inside his coat.

Detective Harris's voice crackled in Daniel's earpiece.

“Daniel, step away from him. Now.””

Michael pulled out a phone.

Not a weapon.

He turned the screen toward Daniel.

A photograph filled it.

Noah was asleep in the guest bedroom, his stuffed dog tucked beneath his arm.

Daniel's blood ran cold.

“Where did you get that?””

Michael smiled.

“Your house isn't as secure as you think.””

Daniel took a step toward him.

“Who took that picture?””

Michael lowered the phone.

“Give me the agreement, and your son stays safe.””

Daniel's mind raced. The police were outside, but whoever had taken the photograph might still be near his home.

He had to get back to Noah.

“Fine,” he said, pushing the folder across the table.

Michael snatched it.

He opened it, flipped through the pages, and began to smile.

Then he reached the final sheet.

His expression changed.

“This isn't the original.””

“No,” Daniel said.

“It isn't.””

Michael slammed the folder down.

“You think you're clever?””

“No. I think you're frightened.””

Michael lunged toward him.

At that moment, officers poured through the side entrance.

“Police! Don't move!””

Michael tried to run, but two officers tackled him against the metal table. His phone skidded across the floor.

Detective Harris entered seconds later.

“Daniel, are you hurt?””

“No. But someone has been inside my home.””

“We have officers there now.””

Daniel retrieved Michael's phone from the floor.

The photograph of Noah was still on the screen.

Beneath it was a message from an unsaved number.

If Bennett refuses, proceed with the backup plan.

Daniel showed Detective Harris.

She read it, then looked at Michael.

“Who sent this?””

Michael remained silent.

An officer began searching his pockets.

He found a second phone, a set of keys, and a folded piece of paper.

Detective Harris opened the paper.

It contained a list of account numbers, dates, and amounts.

At the bottom was a handwritten note.

Transfer completed. The boy's inheritance is secured.

Daniel stared at the words.

“Whose inheritance?””

Detective Harris looked up.

“Mr. Bennett, we need to examine these records immediately.””

Before she could say more, Daniel's phone rang.

Rebecca.

He answered instantly.

“What's happening?””

Her voice was frantic.

“Daniel, the police are here, but Noah is gone.””

For a moment, the world stopped.

“What do you mean, gone?””

“I went upstairs to check on him. His bed is empty. The back door was open.””

Daniel couldn't breathe.

“Where are Lily and Sophie?””

“Safe with me. The officers are searching the property.””

Daniel looked at Michael, who had finally stopped struggling.

The man smiled faintly.

“You should have brought the original.””

Daniel grabbed him by the collar before the officers pulled him away.

“If anything happens to my son—”

Detective Harris stepped between them.

“We'll find him.””

Daniel looked at the photograph on Michael's phone one last time.

Noah had been asleep when it was taken.

Someone had been watching his son.

And now, while Daniel had been lured to the warehouse, that person had taken him.

As the officers rushed toward the exit, Michael called after them.

“You're looking in the wrong place!””

Everyone stopped.

Detective Harris turned.

“Where is Noah?””

Michael's smile vanished.

He looked directly at Daniel.

“Ask Vanessa where she hid the original birth certificate.””

Then he said the words that made Daniel's heart seize.

“Because the person who took your son isn't trying to kill him, Bennett.””

May you like

Michael swallowed.

“They're trying to prove that he's not legally yours.””
