Chapter 6: The Woman at the Door
Daniel didn't remember saying goodbye to Margaret.
He barely remembered getting Noah into the car.
All he could hear was Vanessa's voice repeating the same words.
They know where she is.
Who was Claire? Where had she been hiding? And why had the police suddenly found her after all these years?
Daniel drove toward home with both hands tight on the steering wheel.
Noah sat quietly beside him, holding the stuffed dog against his chest.
"Dad?""
Daniel glanced at him.
"Yeah, buddy?""
"Are we going home?""
"Yes.""
"Is Mom going to be there?""
Daniel hesitated.
"Vanessa will be there.""
Noah looked down.
"Do I have to stay with her?""
"No.""
The answer came so quickly that Noah looked up in surprise.
Daniel reached over and squeezed his shoulder.
"You don't have to stay anywhere you feel unsafe. I'll make sure you're taken care of.""
Noah nodded, but he didn't look convinced.
When they arrived, two police vehicles were parked outside the house.
Rebecca stood near the front steps, speaking with a uniformed officer. Lily and Sophie were visible through the living room window, sitting close together on the sofa.
Daniel parked and hurried toward his sister.
"What's happening?""
Rebecca's expression was grave.
"Vanessa called me after the officers arrived. She said they wanted to ask questions about some missing-person case.""
"Claire?""
Rebecca blinked.
"How did you know?""
Daniel glanced toward Noah.
"Not here.""
Rebecca nodded and took Noah inside.
"Come on, sweetheart. I've got some cookies in the kitchen.""
Noah followed her, casting one last worried look at his father.
Daniel approached the officers.
One of them, Detective Harris, introduced herself and showed him her badge.
"Mr. Bennett, we're investigating a report concerning Claire Brooks, who disappeared several years ago.""
Daniel kept his expression neutral.
"What does that have to do with my family?""
"We understand your late wife was Claire's sister.""
"That's correct.""
"And we have reason to believe your current wife may possess information relevant to the investigation.""
Daniel glanced toward the house.
"She's inside.""
Detective Harris nodded.
"We'd like to speak with her. We also need to ask whether you have any documents or recordings related to Claire's disappearance.""
Daniel considered lying.
He could protect Vanessa from immediate scrutiny by saying he knew nothing. He could keep Emily's letter hidden until he understood more.
But he remembered the recording.
If you keep digging, he may lose more than a mother.
Emily had been afraid.
And Noah had spent weeks being taught to fear the same woman.
Daniel reached into his jacket and removed the flash drive.
"My late wife recorded a conversation with Vanessa shortly before she died.""
Detective Harris's expression sharpened.
"May we listen to it?""
"Yes. But I want my attorney present before I make a formal statement.""
"That's entirely reasonable.""
The detective accepted the drive and signaled to her partner.
As they entered the house, Daniel remained on the front steps for a moment, staring at the windows.
He had built his career on recognizing risks before they became disasters.
Yet the greatest threat to his family had been sitting across from him at the dinner table.
Inside, Vanessa was pacing the living room.
When she saw Daniel, she stopped.
"Finally.""
He didn't respond.
She glanced at the detective.
"Can we speak privately?""
Detective Harris shook her head.
"We'd prefer to conduct the conversation with everyone present.""
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
"Am I under arrest?""
"Not at this time.""
"Then I don't have to answer questions.""
"That's correct," the detective replied.
"You may decline to answer. However, we'd like to understand your relationship with Claire Brooks.""
Vanessa crossed her arms.
"I barely knew her.""
Daniel watched her carefully.
"That's not what Emily's recording suggests.""
Vanessa's face drained of color.
For a moment, she looked genuinely frightened.
Then she recovered.
"Emily was sick. She was confused. You know how much medication she was taking.""
Daniel felt his jaw tighten.
"Don't use her illness to dismiss what she said.""
"I'm not dismissing anything. I'm explaining that you shouldn't trust a recording made by someone who was dying.""
Detective Harris made a note.
"Mrs. Bennett, when did you last speak to Claire Brooks?""
Vanessa stared at the detective.
"I don't remember.""
"Was it before or after she disappeared?""
"I said I don't remember.""
The detective nodded.
"Do you know where Claire is now?""
Vanessa's eyes flicked toward Daniel.
"No.""
Daniel recognized the glance.
It wasn't confusion.
It was calculation.
He stepped closer.
"Vanessa, if you know something about Claire, tell the truth.""
She turned on him.
"You have no idea what you're asking me to do!""
"Then explain it.""
"I can't!""
The words burst out before she could stop them.
The room went silent.
Detective Harris closed her notebook.
"Why can't you?""
Vanessa's breathing quickened.
"Because you don't understand what happened.""
"Then help us understand.""
Vanessa looked toward the staircase.
For a moment, Daniel thought she might finally confess.
Instead, she grabbed her handbag from the sofa.
"I'm done with this conversation.""
Detective Harris stepped between Vanessa and the front door.
"Mrs. Bennett, you are free to leave, but we would appreciate your cooperation.""
Vanessa stared at her, then slowly lowered the bag.
Daniel noticed her right hand trembling.
"Where is Claire?"" he asked again.
Vanessa looked at him with an expression he had never seen before.
Hatred mixed with fear.
"You're going to destroy everything.""
"No," Daniel replied.
"I'm trying to protect the children.""
She laughed bitterly.
"You always say that. You protected Noah, you protected Emily, and now you think you can protect Lily, too. You have no idea what you're protecting them from.""
Detective Harris leaned forward.
"Mrs. Bennett, what does that mean?""
Vanessa pressed her lips together.
Then a small voice came from the hallway.
"Mom?""
Everyone turned.
Lily stood beside the staircase, clutching a stuffed rabbit.
Vanessa's face changed immediately.
"Sweetheart, go upstairs.""
Lily didn't move.
"Why are the police here?""
Vanessa forced a smile.
"Everything is fine.""
"Did you do something bad?""
The question seemed to strike Vanessa harder than any accusation Daniel had made.
She crouched.
"No, baby. Mommy hasn't done anything bad.""
Lily looked at Daniel.
"Then why is Daddy angry?""
Daniel knelt beside her.
"Your dad is trying to understand something important, sweetheart. You haven't done anything wrong.""
Lily glanced between them.
"Is Noah in trouble?""
"No," Daniel said.
"Noah is safe.""
Vanessa stood abruptly.
"That's enough. Lily, go upstairs.""
This time, Lily obeyed.
As she disappeared, Daniel noticed a small piece of paper slipping from her pocket. It fluttered onto the floor near the staircase.
He picked it up.
It was a child's drawing.
Three stick figures stood beneath a yellow sun. One was labeled Lily, another Sophie, and the third Noah.
Above them, in uneven letters, Lily had written:
MY FAMILY.
Daniel stared at the drawing.
For the first time, he wondered whether Vanessa's cruelty toward Noah had been only one part of a much darker pattern.
Detective Harris approached him quietly.
"Mr. Bennett, I think we should speak privately.""
They stepped into the hallway.
The detective lowered her voice.
"We received a new piece of evidence this morning. A woman contacted our department claiming to have information about Claire's disappearance.""
Daniel's pulse quickened.
"Who?""
"She hasn't provided a full statement yet. But she gave us a name that appears in several documents connected to your family.""
Daniel swallowed.
"What name?""
The detective opened her notebook.
"Vanessa Cole.""
Daniel frowned.
"That's Vanessa's maiden name.""
"Yes. And according to the information we received, she wasn't merely acquainted with Claire.""
Detective Harris paused, watching his face.
"She was the last person known to have seen Claire before she vanished.""
Daniel felt the floor shift beneath him.
Behind them, Vanessa began shouting at the officers, demanding that they leave her house.
The detective continued.
"There's something else. The woman who contacted us claims Claire left behind a child before she disappeared.""
Daniel stared at her.
"Claire had Lily.""
"Yes. But that's not the child she was referring to.""
His mouth went dry.
"Then who?""
Detective Harris looked down at her notes.
"She said Claire had another child. A son. And she believes that boy may still be living under a different name.""
Daniel's mind raced through everything Margaret had told him.
Claire's disappearance. Vanessa's threats. Emily's warning.
Then he remembered the sentence from the letter.
Please don't blame Noah for any of them.
Daniel turned toward the living room, where his son sat beside Rebecca, eating a cookie.
For the first time, he wondered whether Emily's warning had been about something that happened before Noah was born—or something that was still happening now.
The detective touched his arm.
"Mr. Bennett, we need to establish Noah's biological family history as soon as possible.""
Daniel looked at her sharply.
"Why Noah?""
Before she could answer, a uniformed officer hurried in from the front porch.
"Detective, there's a woman at the door.""
"Who is she?""
The officer glanced toward Vanessa, then back at the detective.
"She says her name is Claire Brooks.""
From across the room, Vanessa dropped her handbag.
It struck the floor with a heavy thud.
May you like
And when the front door opened, Daniel heard a woman's trembling voice say the words that would change everything.
"Where is my son?""
