Chapter 8: The Agreement Emily Never Told Him About
Daniel read the document three times.
It was a private guardianship agreement, drafted shortly before Emily's death. The first page named Noah as the child whose welfare it was intended to protect. The second outlined conditions under which a designated family member could request an independent review of his living arrangements.
At the bottom were the signatures of Emily, Margaret Ellis, and Daniel's former attorney, Thomas Whitaker.
Daniel felt a chill run through him.
“I never signed this.””
Detective Harris nodded.
“That may be important. The document appears to have been prepared for your review, but we haven't established whether it was ever finalized.””
“Why would Emily need an agreement like this?””
Claire wiped her cheeks.
“Because she was afraid of what would happen after she died.””
Daniel turned toward her.
“Afraid of Vanessa?””
Claire nodded slowly.
“Emily believed Vanessa wanted to become the person who controlled the children. She was worried that once she was gone, nobody would notice if Noah was being treated differently.””
Daniel stared at the document.
Emily had known.
She had seen the danger before he had.
And he had dismissed her concerns as anxiety caused by her illness.
“What exactly was Emily trying to protect Noah from?”” he asked.
Claire hesitated.
“Vanessa wasn't always cruel to him. When Emily was alive, Vanessa was careful. She acted like she adored Noah.””
“Then what changed?””
“Emily died.””
The simplicity of the answer made it worse.
Claire continued.
“Vanessa knew you were grieving. She knew you were trying to rebuild your life. She also knew you wanted Noah to have a mother figure. She used that.””
Daniel looked away.
He remembered Vanessa comforting him at Emily's funeral. She had held his hand and promised she would never let him face the world alone.
He had mistaken her performance for compassion.
Detective Harris placed the document in a protective folder.
“We'll need to examine this more closely. Mr. Bennett, I recommend that you preserve every document Emily left behind and avoid confronting Mrs. Bennett about any further evidence until we've completed our initial interviews.””
Daniel nodded.
“Understood.””
The detective glanced toward Noah.
“I'd also like to arrange a meeting with a child specialist. He shouldn't have to answer the same questions repeatedly.””
“Agreed.””
After the officers left, Daniel took Noah upstairs.
The boy sat on the edge of the bed, his stuffed dog resting in his lap.
“Dad?””
“I'm here.””
“Is Claire going to take me away?””
Daniel sat beside him.
“No one is taking you anywhere without making sure you're safe and understanding what you need.””
“But she's my other mom?””
“She gave birth to you, yes. But Emily raised you. She was your mom in every way that mattered, and she always will be.””
Noah rubbed the dog's worn ear.
“Can I still miss her?””
Daniel pulled him close.
“Every day, if you want to.””
Noah leaned against him.
“Then I want to.””
They sat quietly for a while.
Downstairs, Claire was speaking with Rebecca. Daniel could hear occasional snatches of conversation, but he didn't go to listen. He needed to give Noah space to absorb what had happened.
Eventually, Noah looked up.
“Can I ask Claire something?””
“Of course.””
Daniel walked with him downstairs.
Claire immediately stood when she saw them.
“Hello, sweetheart.””
Noah remained beside his father.
“Why didn't you come back sooner?””
Claire's face crumpled.
“I tried.””
“How?””
“I wrote letters. I asked people to help me find you. But I was frightened, and sometimes I let that fear stop me from doing what I should have done.””
“Did you know where I lived?””
Claire shook her head.
“Not at first. When I finally found out, I didn't know whether Emily would let me see you. I thought she hated me.””
“Did she?””
“No.”” Claire swallowed.
“She loved me. Even when she was angry with me, she loved me.””
Noah studied her.
“Did you love me?””
Claire covered her mouth, fighting back tears.
“More than I knew how to explain.””
Noah looked down.
“Then why didn't you find me?””
Claire didn't try to defend herself.
“Because I was a coward.””
The word hung in the air.
Daniel watched his son consider it.
Then Noah asked the question that seemed to hurt Claire most.
“Are you going to leave again?””
Claire knelt, but she didn't reach for him.
“I can't promise you that life will be simple. But I can promise that I won't disappear without telling you the truth. And I won't ask you to call me anything you're not ready to call me.””
Noah nodded slowly.
“Okay.””
It wasn't forgiveness.
It wasn't trust.
It was a beginning.
Later that afternoon, Daniel called Thomas Whitaker, the attorney whose signature appeared on Emily's agreement.
Thomas answered immediately.
“Daniel. I've been expecting your call.””
Daniel went cold.
“Expecting it?””
Thomas sighed.
“I received a request from Detective Harris this morning. She asked about a guardianship document prepared by my office several years ago.””
“Why did you prepare it?””
There was a pause.
“Emily asked me to.””
“Why didn't you tell me?””
“Because she instructed me not to disclose the contents unless a specific condition was met.””
Daniel gripped his phone.
“What condition?””
“Evidence that Noah's welfare was being compromised after Emily's death.””
Daniel looked toward the kitchen, where Noah was sitting with Rebecca and eating a bowl of soup.
His son had needed help for weeks.
And Emily had somehow anticipated that possibility.
“What else did she tell you?”” Daniel asked.
Thomas lowered his voice.
“She said she had reason to believe Vanessa was concealing information about Lily's biological family. Emily wanted to ensure that if a dispute arose, no child would be used as leverage.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
“So this was never just about Noah.””
“No. It was about all three children.””
Thomas explained that Emily had arranged for independent financial oversight of a small trust intended to support the children if Daniel became unable to care for them. She had also requested that the trust's records be kept separate from the household accounts.
“Why?”” Daniel asked.
“Emily believed someone might attempt to manipulate the children's inheritance. She didn't accuse Vanessa of a crime, but she wanted safeguards.””
Daniel remembered how Vanessa had complained about money, how she had insisted that everything in the house revolve around her daughters, and how furious she had become when he questioned her treatment of Noah.
“Did Vanessa know about the trust?””
“I can't say. But someone attempted to access its records last month using credentials that had been assigned to your household.””
Daniel's blood ran cold.
“Whose credentials?””
Thomas hesitated.
“Vanessa's.””
The call ended shortly afterward.
Daniel stood in the kitchen, staring at the wall.
For years, he had thought his greatest failure was not being home enough after Emily died.
Now he realized that his grief had made him vulnerable to someone who knew exactly how to exploit it.
His phone buzzed.
A message from Detective Harris appeared.
We have obtained a warrant to examine financial records associated with the children's trust. Please do not discuss this investigation with anyone connected to the account.
Daniel put the phone away.
Then Rebecca entered the kitchen.
“Daniel, there's something you should see.””
She held a tablet.
“Lily asked if she could use my phone to call you earlier. She accidentally opened an old message thread while looking for your number.””
Daniel frowned.
“What thread?””
Rebecca turned the screen toward him.
It was a series of messages between Vanessa and an unknown contact.
The oldest was dated six months earlier.
He still doesn't know about the trust.
A reply followed.
Then keep it that way. Once the guardianship issue is settled, we'll have access to everything.
Daniel felt the room tilt.
Another message appeared below it.
And what about the boy?
Vanessa's reply was short.
He won't be a problem much longer.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“Where did this come from?””
“Lily said Vanessa used the messaging app on her old tablet. She thought it was a game.””
Daniel immediately called Detective Harris.
Within minutes, she was back at the house.
She examined the messages and asked Rebecca to preserve the device.
“We'll need to authenticate these,” she said.
“But if they're genuine, they may be significant.””
Daniel looked toward the stairs.
“Lily and Sophie are innocent in all of this.””
“We understand that, Mr. Bennett.””
“And Noah needs to be protected.””
Detective Harris nodded.
“We'll make arrangements.””
As she prepared to leave, Daniel noticed a final message at the bottom of the screen.
It had arrived only minutes earlier.
The police are asking questions. Do what we discussed. Tonight.
Daniel showed it to the detective.
Her expression changed.
“Mr. Bennett, I need you to tell me exactly where Vanessa is right now.””
Daniel's phone rang before he could answer.
It was Rebecca's number.
But Rebecca was standing right beside him.
Daniel answered.
A man's voice spoke from the other end.
“Mr. Bennett, if you want your children to stay safe, you'll bring the original guardianship agreement to the old Bennett warehouse tonight.””
Daniel went still.
“Who is this?””
“You have one hour.””
The line went dead.
Detective Harris immediately called her team.
Daniel looked toward the stairs, where Noah was beginning to drift off on the guest bed.
The message had mentioned children, plural.
Someone knew about Emily's agreement.
Someone knew about the trust.
And someone was willing to threaten his family to get what they wanted.
Daniel had spent his life believing money could solve almost any problem.
May you like
Now he was facing an enemy who seemed to know exactly where money stopped being useful.
And the clock was already running.
