Chapter 5: The Woman Who Knew Emily's Secret
Margaret Ellis lived in a modest brick house on a quiet street lined with maple trees.
At nine the next morning, Daniel pulled into her driveway with Noah sitting beside him. He had considered leaving his son with Rebecca, but Noah had refused to let go of his father's hand when Daniel mentioned the possibility.
"I don't want to be alone," Noah had whispered.
So Daniel brought him along.
Margaret opened the front door before Daniel could knock a second time.
She was in her late sixties, with silver hair tied loosely at the back of her head. The moment she saw Noah, her eyes filled with tears.
"Oh, my goodness," she whispered.
Noah stepped closer to Daniel.
"Hello," he said politely.
Margaret knelt.
"You look so much like your mother.""
Noah studied her face.
"Did you know her?""
"I loved her very much.""
Daniel watched Margaret struggle to compose herself. She reached for a tissue from her pocket, then stepped aside.
"Please come in.""
The living room smelled of coffee and old books. Framed photographs covered one wall, and Daniel recognized Emily in several of them—laughing at a beach, standing beside a birthday cake, holding a newborn Noah.
He stopped in front of a photograph of Emily with a young woman Daniel had never seen.
"Who is that?""
Margaret followed his gaze.
"Emily's younger sister.""
Daniel turned.
"Emily had a sister?""
Margaret stared at him.
For several seconds, she seemed unable to decide what to say.
Then she nodded.
"Yes. Her name was Claire.""
Daniel sat down slowly.
"Emily never told me she had a sister.""
"She wanted to. More than once.""
"Why didn't she?""
Margaret folded her hands.
"Because Claire made a mistake years ago, and Emily believed she had to protect her from the consequences.""
Daniel felt the room grow smaller.
"What kind of mistake?""
Margaret looked toward Noah.
"Perhaps the boy should have something to eat first.""
Noah's eyes widened at the word eat.
Daniel noticed.
"Would you like breakfast, buddy?""
Noah nodded hesitantly.
Margaret led him to the kitchen and prepared scrambled eggs, toast, and strawberries. She placed a full plate in front of him, then set a second plate beside it.
"There's plenty," she assured him.
"You can have more whenever you want.""
Noah picked up his fork.
He ate the first few bites quickly, then slowed down and glanced at Daniel.
"Can I finish all of it?""
Daniel felt a painful knot form in his chest.
"Of course.""
Margaret turned away, wiping her eyes.
When Noah finished, she brought him a glass of orange juice and a small bowl of strawberries.
"Would you like to help me feed the birds in the garden afterward?""
Noah nodded.
Margaret waited until the boy was outside before returning to the living room.
Then she sat across from Daniel and opened a wooden cabinet.
Inside was a thick folder tied with a faded blue ribbon.
"Emily gave me this two months before she died," Margaret said.
"She told me not to open it unless you came to me.""
Daniel stared at the folder.
"What's in it?""
"Medical records, financial documents, and a signed statement from Emily.""
"About Claire?""
Margaret nodded.
"And about your family.""
She placed the folder on the coffee table.
Daniel opened it.
The first document was a birth certificate.
The name at the top belonged to Claire Brooks.
Below it was the name of a child.
*Lily Bennett.*
Daniel stopped breathing for a moment.
"No.""
Margaret sat very still.
"Daniel, Lily is your biological daughter.""
He looked up.
"What are you talking about? Lily is Vanessa's daughter.""
"Vanessa gave birth to Lily. But she isn't Lily's biological mother.""
Daniel stared at the certificate, trying to make the words fit together.
"That's impossible.""
Margaret slid another document toward him.
It was a medical report from a fertility clinic, dated several years earlier. The names of the intended parents were Daniel Bennett and Emily Brooks.
Daniel remembered the appointments. The painful conversations. The doctor who had told them that their chances of having another child were extremely low.
He remembered Emily crying in the car afterward and telling him they could still have a wonderful life with Noah.
But he had never known about Claire.
Margaret spoke gently.
"Emily and Claire were estranged for years. When Claire became pregnant and found herself unable to care for a child, she reached out to Emily. Your wife wanted to help her sister, but she also wanted another child.""
Daniel shook his head.
"Emily never told me.""
"She planned to. But before she could, Claire changed her mind about the adoption.""
"Then how did Lily end up with Vanessa?""
Margaret hesitated.
"That's the part Emily couldn't explain without causing a great deal of pain.""
Daniel leaned forward.
"Tell me everything.""
Margaret took a breath.
"Claire gave birth to Lily and initially agreed to let Emily and you adopt her. The arrangements were handled privately. But shortly before the adoption could be finalized, Claire disappeared with the baby.""
Daniel felt sick.
"Why?""
"She was frightened. She had become involved with a man who promised to support her, and she believed she could raise Lily herself.""
"What does Vanessa have to do with this?""
Margaret looked down at her hands.
"Vanessa was married to Claire's former partner. They had a child together, Sophie. When that relationship ended, Vanessa learned that Claire had a daughter whose adoption had never been completed.""
Daniel frowned.
"How would she know that?""
"Because Vanessa had access to documents from Claire's old apartment. She learned about the adoption arrangement, and she eventually tracked Claire down.""
Daniel stood.
"You're saying Vanessa knew Lily was Claire's daughter before she married me?""
"Yes.""
"Why would she marry me?""
Margaret's face tightened.
"Emily believed Vanessa wanted access to the money and properties you owned. But your wife also believed Vanessa was hiding something about the circumstances surrounding Claire's disappearance.""
Daniel gripped the back of a chair.
"Claire disappeared?""
Margaret nodded slowly.
"She left Lily with someone she trusted and vanished. Emily spent months trying to find her. Before she died, she discovered that Vanessa had been communicating with Claire shortly before she disappeared.""
Daniel stared at the folder.
"Why didn't Emily tell the police?""
"She was gathering evidence. She was afraid of accusing someone without proof, and by then her health was deteriorating. She asked me to preserve everything in case something happened to her.""
Daniel looked toward the garden.
Noah was crouched beside Margaret's bird feeder, scattering seeds with both hands. He looked peaceful for the first time in days.
Daniel turned back.
"Does Lily know?""
"No. She's too young to understand all of this.""
"And Sophie?""
"Vanessa's biological daughter. Emily's notes suggest Vanessa was using both girls to keep control of the situation.""
Daniel's mind raced.
Vanessa had treated Noah as an outsider while showering Lily and Sophie with attention. He had assumed it was simply favoritism.
Now he wondered whether her treatment of the children was connected to a secret she had spent years trying to bury.
Margaret opened the folder to its final section.
"There's one more thing.""
She removed a small flash drive.
"Emily recorded a conversation with Vanessa shortly before she died.""
Daniel's stomach tightened.
"What's on it?""
"I don't know. Emily told me not to listen to it unless you were present.""
Daniel took the drive.
"Can we play it?""
Margaret nodded and brought over a laptop.
The recording began with the sound of a door closing.
Then Emily's voice filled the room.
"Vanessa, I know you contacted Claire.""
A second voice answered.
Vanessa.
"Then you know nothing, Emily.""
"I know you promised to help her.""
"I did help her.""
"By taking her daughter?""
A sharp silence followed.
Then Vanessa spoke again, her voice low and cold.
"You should worry about your own son, Emily. If you keep digging, he may lose more than a mother.""
Daniel went rigid.
The recording continued, but before Emily could respond, the audio crackled and cut off.
Margaret covered her mouth.
Daniel stared at the laptop.
The woman he had married had threatened his first wife.
And whatever had happened to Claire, Vanessa might know more than she had ever admitted.
Daniel closed the laptop and slipped the flash drive into his pocket.
He was going to the police.
But before he could stand, his phone rang.
The caller ID showed Vanessa's name.
He answered.
"What do you want?""
Her voice was shaking.
"Daniel, you need to come home.""
"Why?""
"Because someone has been here asking questions about Claire.""
Daniel went still.
"Who?""
Vanessa whispered three words.
"The police, Daniel.""
May you like
Then, after a pause, she added something that made his blood run cold.
"They know where she is.""
