Chapter 9: The Vault
The hallway outside was filled with smoke.
Ava coughed as Daniel pulled her toward the emergency stairs.
“Where are we going?””
“The basement.””
“My family is upstairs!””
“They'll follow.””
“We can't leave them.””
Daniel stopped.
“Ava, listen to me.””
He pointed toward the stairwell.
“If those people reach the vault before us, your father's evidence disappears forever.””
Ava stared at him.
Then she heard Lily's voice from above.
“Ava!””
She turned.
“Lily!””
Her sister appeared through the smoke, followed by Thomas and Robert.
Lily ran toward her.
“I thought you were trapped!””
Ava hugged her.
“Are you okay?””
“I'm fine.””
Robert looked at Daniel.
“You.””
Daniel stared back.
“You knew.””
Robert's voice was cold.
“You knew this was coming.””
Daniel nodded.
“I did.””
“Why didn't you tell us?””
“Because if I told you, they would know.””
Thomas stepped between them.
“Enough. We need the vault.””
They descended.
The basement was dark and flooded with water from a broken pipe.
At the far end stood a steel door.
Ava looked at Daniel.
“That's it?””
He nodded.
“Use the key.””
Ava inserted it.
Nothing happened.
She turned it.
Still nothing.
“What am I doing wrong?””
Daniel pointed to a fingerprint scanner.
“Your grandfather wanted two keys.””
“Where's the second?””
Robert stepped forward.
“I have it.””
Ava looked at him.
Robert reached into his coat.
He pulled out a small brass key.
Ava stared.
“You had it this whole time?””
Robert nodded.
“Your grandfather gave it to me.””
“Why?””
“To protect you.””
Ava looked at him.
“You keep saying that.””
Robert's eyes filled with tears.
“This time, it's true.””
He inserted the second key.
The door opened.
Inside was a vault.
Metal cabinets lined the walls.
Boxes covered the floor.
Thomas immediately began searching.
“Financial records.””
Lily opened another box.
“Photographs.””
Maya found a stack of letters.
“Ava.””
Ava walked over.
Maya handed her the top envelope.
Her name was written on it.
She opened it.
Inside was a letter from her grandfather.
*Ava,*
*If you have reached this room, then you chose not to let money decide who you are.*
Ava's eyes blurred.
*That makes you stronger than I ever was.*
She continued reading.
*The fortune is yours, but it is not your inheritance.*
Ava frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Thomas looked over.
*Your real inheritance is the truth.*
Ava lowered the letter.
Her father opened another box.
Inside were court records.
His original trial documents.
Bank transfers.
Witness statements.
Everything needed to prove he had been framed.
He stared at the evidence.
After eighteen years, his hands finally stopped shaking.
“I can clear my name.””
Thomas nodded.
“You can.””
Lily opened another box.
Inside was a diary.
She flipped through it.
Then stopped.
“Dad.””
Her father looked at her.
“What?””
She handed him the diary.
His face changed as he read.
“What is it?””
He looked at Ava.
“Your grandfather knew about the third heir.””
Ava frowned.
“Maya?””
“No.””
Everyone looked at him.
He turned the diary toward them.
A single page had been marked.
*Eleanor's daughter must never discover who she is.*
Maya stared.
“Who is Eleanor's daughter?””
Ava's heart sank.
“We thought it was you.””
Maya shook her head.
“I don't know.””
Daniel suddenly stepped forward.
“That's not what the diary says.””
Everyone turned.
Daniel pointed to a line near the bottom.
*Eleanor's daughter is already inside the family.*
Ava's stomach tightened.
“What?””
Daniel continued reading.
“She was placed there after Eleanor died.””
Thomas took the diary.
His eyes widened.
“There are no names.””
“Then how do we know who she is?””
Daniel looked at Ava.
“Because your grandfather left another clue.””
He reached into the final box.
Inside was a photograph.
Ava took it.
It showed three women standing outside a hospital.
Denise.
Eleanor.
And another woman.
Ava stared at the third woman.
She recognized her immediately.
Her breath stopped.
“No.””
Lily looked over her shoulder.
“What?””
Ava whispered:
“I know her.””
Robert stepped closer.
“Who is she?””
Ava turned the photograph around.
The woman was wearing a hospital badge.
Beneath her picture was a name.
*Dr. Rachel Carter.*
Maya suddenly covered her mouth.
“My mother.””
Ava looked at her.
“What?””
Maya's face went pale.
“My mother is Rachel Carter.””
The room fell silent.
Maya's mother had died when Maya was ten.
Or so everyone believed.
Ava looked at the photograph again.
Then at Maya.
“If that's your mother…”
Thomas slowly finished the thought.
“Then Maya isn't Eleanor's granddaughter.””
Maya stared at him.
“What am I?””
Before anyone could answer, footsteps echoed outside the vault.
One.
Two.
Three.
Then a man's voice came through the steel door.
“You've found it.””
Daniel stepped backward.
Ava gripped the photograph.
The voice continued.
“Now open the vault.””
Robert looked at Ava.
“Don't.””
The man outside laughed.
“You have something that belongs to me.””
Ava whispered:
“Who are you?””
A pause.
Then the voice answered:
“Ask your mother.””
Everyone turned toward Denise.
She had gone completely still.
The voice came again.
“Ask Denise why she switched the babies.””
Ava's world seemed to stop.
She looked at her mother.
“Switched… what babies?””
Denise began to cry.
And from the other side of the vault door came the sound of a gun being cocked.
Then the stranger said:
“Tell her, Denise.””
A long silence followed.
Finally, Denise whispered:
“I didn't give you the wrong daughter.””
May you like
She looked at Ava.
“I gave your grandfather the wrong twin.””
