Chapter 2: The Name in the Envelope

Nobody moved.

The morning sunlight still washed over the driveway, bright and cheerful, making the scene feel almost absurd.

Pink balloons bounced gently above the Mercedes.

A birthday cake sat untouched on the patio table.

And Ava stood there holding a letter that had just destroyed everything she thought she knew about her family.

Maya slowly lowered her phone.

“Your father is alive?””

Ava couldn't answer.

Robert stepped toward the stranger.

“Who are you?””

The man reached into his jacket and produced a business card.

“Thomas Hale. Attorney.””

Robert took the card.

“Attorney for whom?””

Thomas looked at Ava.

“Her father.””

Denise suddenly appeared at the front door.

Her face had gone white.

“Thomas.””

Everyone turned.

Thomas nodded.

“Mrs. Brooks.””

Denise's eyes locked onto the envelope.

“You weren't supposed to come here.””

“I was told to deliver it personally.””

“You should have given it to me.””

Thomas shook his head.

“Your instructions were very clear. It had to go directly to Ava.””

Denise hurried down the steps.

“Give it to me.””

Ava pulled the envelope against her chest.

“No.””

Denise stopped.

“Ava, please.””

“Why?””

“Because you don't understand.””

“Then explain it.””

Denise looked at Robert.

Robert's expression had changed completely.

“What is going on?””

Denise said nothing.

Maya stepped forward.

“Mom, you told us Dad died when Ava was five.””

Denise closed her eyes.

“I know what I told you.””

Ava stared at her.

“You lied?””

“I protected you.””

“From what?””

Denise's voice cracked.

“From him.””

Ava opened the envelope.

Inside were several documents.

The first was a legal agreement.

The second was an old photograph.

Ava's hands shook as she lifted it.

A younger Denise stood beside a man with dark hair.

Between them was a little girl.

Ava.

She recognized herself immediately.

But there was something else.

On the back of the photograph, someone had written:

*To my daughter, Ava. I never stopped looking for you.*

Ava's breath caught.

“No.””

Maya moved closer.

“What does it say?””

Ava handed her the photograph.

Maya read it.

Her face changed.

“Mom…”

Denise began crying.

Robert looked at her.

“You told me he died.””

“I thought he was dead.””

Thomas interrupted gently.

“He wasn't.””

Robert turned toward him.

“Then where has he been?””

Thomas hesitated.

“Prison.””

Ava's eyes widened.

“What?””

Thomas continued.

“He was convicted eighteen years ago.””

Denise shook her head.

“He was innocent.””

Robert stared at his wife.

“You said he abandoned you.””

“He didn't.””

“You said he was dangerous.””

“He wasn't.””

“You told me he died.””

Denise covered her face.

“I was afraid.””

Robert's voice became quiet.

“Afraid of what?””

Denise didn't answer.

Ava looked down at the remaining documents.

There was a court order.

A custody agreement.

And another name.

*Evelyn Brooks.*

Ava frowned.

“Who is Evelyn?””

Denise froze.

Thomas looked at her.

“You didn't tell her?””

Denise whispered, “No.””

Ava's stomach tightened.

“Tell me what?””

Thomas opened his briefcase.

“Your father has requested a paternity confirmation and a formal meeting.””

Ava laughed nervously.

“He's my father. Why would he need a paternity confirmation?””

Thomas looked at her.

“Because there is another woman claiming to be his biological daughter.””

Silence.

Maya's eyes widened.

“Another daughter?””

Ava stared at Denise.

“Mom?””

Denise looked like she was about to collapse.

Robert caught her arm.

“Sit down.””

“No,” Ava said.

Her voice was suddenly firm.

“I want the truth.””

Denise looked at her daughter.

“You're not ready.””

“I've been ready for eighteen years.””

“You don't know what you're asking.””

“I know exactly what I'm asking.””

Ava held up the photograph.

“Why did you make me believe my father was dead?””

Denise finally broke.

“Because he wasn't supposed to find you.””

Ava stared at her.

“Why?””

Denise whispered one sentence.

“Because your father wasn't the one who was supposed to die that night.””

Maya's eyes widened.

“What does that mean?””

Before Denise could answer, a car horn sounded from the street.

Everyone turned.

A black sedan had stopped outside the house.

A man stepped out.

He was older now, his hair streaked with gray.

But Ava recognized his face from the photograph.

The man slowly walked toward the driveway.

Thomas straightened.

“Mr. Brooks.””

Ava couldn't breathe.

The stranger stopped several feet away.

His eyes filled with tears.

He looked directly at her.

“Ava.””

Her knees nearly gave out.

She whispered the only word she could manage.

“Dad?””

He nodded.

Then he looked at Denise.

And his expression hardened.

“Where is she?””

Denise began trembling.

Ava frowned.

“Where is who?””

Her father didn't answer immediately.

He looked toward the house.

Then toward the street.

May you like

Finally, he said:

“The other girl.””
