Chapter 1: The Birthday Surprise
By the time the garage doors opened, Maya Brooks already knew something was wrong.
She had expected balloons, cake, maybe a new phone if her mother was feeling generous.
She had not expected to see two brand-new luxury SUVs sitting side by side in the morning sunlight.
Her mother, Denise, stood proudly beside a silver Toyota Highlander.
Her stepsister, Ava, was practically dancing next to a black Mercedes-Benz GLE, its polished hood reflecting the pink-and-white balloons tied to the front grille.
And Maya?
She stood beside her own red Toyota Highlander with a forced smile.
“Happy birthday, sweetheart,” her stepfather, Robert, said, handing her the keys.
Maya stared at them.
Then she looked at Ava.
Ava lifted her Mercedes key fob and laughed.
“Dad actually surprised me,” she said.
“I had no idea.””
Robert smiled.
“You girls both work hard. You deserve something reliable and beautiful.””
Maya's fingers tightened around the Toyota keys.
“Reliable?””
Robert's smile faded slightly.
“What?””
“You called it reliable.””
Denise immediately stepped closer.
“Maya, don't start.””
Maya looked at her mother.
“I'm not starting anything.””
Ava walked around her Mercedes, admiring the leather interior through the open driver's door.
Maya followed her with her eyes.
“How much was that?””
Ava shrugged.
“I don't know.””
Robert answered casually.
“About ninety thousand.””
Maya's mouth fell open.
“Ninety thousand?””
“Maya,” Denise warned.
“You spent ninety thousand dollars on her?””
Robert's expression hardened.
“I spent what I was comfortable spending.””
“And I'm supposed to be happy with this?””
She pointed at the Highlander.
Nobody spoke.
Even the birds seemed to disappear beneath the sudden silence.
Ava slowly closed the Mercedes door.
“Maya, it's still a brand-new car.””
“I know what it is.””
“Then what's the problem?””
“The problem is that you got a Mercedes.””
Ava blinked.
“And you got a Toyota.””
“Exactly.””
Robert folded his arms.
“Maya, I chose the Highlander because you told me last month you wanted an SUV that was practical.””
“I changed my mind.””
Denise immediately jumped in.
“She shouldn't have to settle.””
Robert looked at his wife.
“Settle?””
“She deserves something better.””
Maya felt a strange surge of victory.
Finally.
Her mother understood.
“I knew you'd say that,” Maya said.
Robert stared at her.
“I thought your birthday was supposed to be about being grateful for what someone did for you.””
Maya laughed bitterly.
“That's easy to say when you aren't the one standing next to the cheaper car.””
Ava's face changed.
“Cheaper?””
Maya pointed at the Mercedes.
“Don't pretend you don't know what this is about.””
Ava looked genuinely confused.
“I didn't ask him for it.””
“But you took it.””
“Of course I took it!””
Denise stepped between them.
“Enough.””
Maya's voice rose.
“No, Mom. I'm tired of being treated like the second daughter.””
Robert's jaw tightened.
“You are not my second daughter.””
Maya froze.
Robert continued quietly.
“You are my daughter because I chose to be your father.””
For a moment, guilt flickered across Maya's face.
Then Ava's phone buzzed.
She glanced at the screen and quickly turned it over.
Maya noticed.
“Who's that?””
“Nobody.””
“Daniel?””
Ava's eyes snapped toward her.
Robert frowned.
“Who's Daniel?””
Ava swallowed.
“No one important.””
Maya gave a small, humorless smile.
“That's funny.””
Ava looked at her.
“What?””
“Because you told me last week Daniel Reed was just some guy from your old college.””
Ava went pale.
Denise looked between them.
“Maya, what are you talking about?””
Maya pulled out her phone.
“I saw them together.””
Ava whispered, “Where?””
“Outside the hospital.””
Ava's face drained of color.
Maya hadn't expected that reaction.
“What?””
Ava said nothing.
Maya held up the photograph.
“You told everyone you were at the mall that night.””
Robert reached for the phone.
“Let me see that.””
Ava stepped forward.
“No.””
Her voice shook.
Robert stopped.
Maya stared at her stepsister.
“Why are you so scared?””
Ava's phone buzzed again.
This time, she looked.
One message appeared.
*Daniel: They know about your mother. Don't say anything until I get there.*
Ava's hand began to tremble.
And before anyone could ask what it meant, a black SUV turned into the driveway.
It stopped directly behind the Mercedes.
A man in a dark suit stepped out.
He carried a white envelope.
He looked at Ava.
“Miss Ava Brooks?””
Ava nodded slowly.
The man held out the envelope.
“Your mother asked me to give you this.””
Ava stared at the handwriting.
Her mother's handwriting.
Then she saw the name written beneath it.
A name that had been forbidden in their house for eighteen years.
Her father's name.
Ava whispered, “He's dead.””
The stranger shook his head.
“No, Miss Brooks.””
May you like
He lowered his voice.
“Your father is alive.””
