Chapter 10: The Daughter Who Was Chosen
The vault went silent.
Ava stared at Denise.
“The wrong twin?””
Denise nodded through her tears.
“I was supposed to give him Lily.””
Lily stepped backward.
“What?””
Denise pressed both hands against her mouth.
“I couldn't do it.””
Ava's voice trembled.
“Then who did you give him?””
Denise looked at her.
“You.””
The words struck harder than the gunshot outside.
Ava shook her head.
“No.””
“I switched your hospital bracelets.””
Lily's face went white.
“Why?””
“Because your grandfather wanted the heir. He believed Lily was the stronger child. He had already decided she would inherit everything.””
Ava whispered, “So you gave him me instead?””
Denise nodded.
“I knew he would raise you differently. I knew he would keep you protected because he believed you were the heir.””
“But you raised Lily?””
“No.””
Denise's voice broke.
“I kept Lily with me too.””
Ava stared at her.
“Then who did Grandfather take?””
Denise closed her eyes.
“Nobody.””
Everyone froze.
“He took the wrong child,” Denise whispered.
“He took a baby he believed was Lily.””
Lily looked at Ava.
“Then who was that?””
Denise couldn't answer.
Ava suddenly understood.
“The girl you gave him…”
Denise nodded.
“She wasn't one of us.””
Thomas looked stunned.
“Then where did she come from?””
Denise wiped her face.
“The hospital had another newborn girl that night. Her mother died during childbirth. There was no surviving family.””
Lily stared at her.
“You gave a stranger's baby to my grandfather?””
“I thought I was saving you.””
“You let him raise an innocent child.””
“I know.””
Ava's stomach twisted.
“What happened to her?””
Denise looked toward the vault door.
“She died.””
Nobody breathed.
“She died when she was sixteen,” Denise continued.
“Your grandfather covered it up. He told everyone she had been sent away.””
Lily's eyes filled with tears.
“So all these years…”
“He thought he had the heir.””
Thomas looked at the trust documents.
“Then the entire inheritance was built on a false identity.””
Ava nodded slowly.
“And that's why he left the test.””
Her father looked at her.
“He knew eventually you'd discover the truth.””
Ava looked down at the letter.
The words suddenly made sense.
*The one who refuses gets everything.*
Her grandfather hadn't been testing her greed.
He had been testing whether she would reject the identity he had built for her.
Ava looked toward the steel door.
“What does the man outside want?””
Daniel's face was grim.
“The original birth records.””
Thomas turned sharply.
“Why?””
“Because he was one of your grandfather's lawyers.””
Ava frowned.
“Who?””
The man outside laughed.
“You've heard my name before.””
Denise closed her eyes.
“Victor.””
The voice answered.
“Hello, Denise.””
Ava's father stepped toward the door.
“Victor Hale.””
Thomas stiffened.
“You know him?””
“He prosecuted me.””
Thomas looked at the documents.
“No. Victor Hale was the attorney who represented your grandfather during the original investigation.””
Ava looked at Daniel.
“And you?””
Daniel sighed.
“My father.””
Ava stared at him.
“You're his son?””
“Yes.””
“You've been working for him?””
“I was.””
“Then why help us?””
Daniel looked at the floor.
“Because I found out what he did.””
The gun outside clicked.
Victor's voice returned.
“Daniel, open the door.””
Daniel didn't move.
“Dad, it's over.””
“No. It isn't.””
“You killed people.””
“I protected this family.””
“You destroyed it.””
Silence.
Then Victor said:
“Daniel, step away from the door.””
Daniel looked at Ava.
“I need you to trust me.””
Before Ava could answer, Daniel grabbed the emergency lever beside the vault.
The lights went out.
Ava heard shouting.
Then a burst of gunfire.
Thomas pulled her down.
“Stay low!””
Something slammed into the steel door.
Another shot.
Then silence.
Ava slowly lifted her head.
Daniel was lying on the floor.
Blood spread across his shoulder.
“Daniel!””
Ava rushed toward him.
He winced.
“I'm okay.””
“You've been shot!””
“It's not deep.””
Thomas checked him.
“He's right. We need to get him out.””
Robert looked toward the door.
“Victor?””
“Gone,” Lily said.
She pointed at the security monitor.
A black SUV was speeding away from the building.
Ava looked at Daniel.
“Why did you do that?””
He smiled weakly.
“Because you deserved one person who told you the truth.””
Ava helped him sit up.
Then she noticed something in his hand.
A small silver key.
“What is that?””
Daniel handed it to her.
“The final lock.””
“There is another room?””
“Yes.””
Thomas looked at the wall.
He pressed his hand against a hidden panel.
It opened.
Behind it was a narrow chamber.
Inside sat a single wooden box.
Ava approached.
There was no lock.
Only an inscription.
*For the daughter I failed to protect.*
Ava opened it.
Inside was a letter.
And a tiny hospital bracelet.
She picked it up.
The name printed on it made her hands shake.
*AVA CARTER.*
She looked at Denise.
“You changed my name.””
Denise nodded.
“Your birth name was Ava Carter.””
Lily stared at the bracelet.
“Then why did you call me Ava too?””
Denise smiled through her tears.
“Because I couldn't bear to lose the name.””
Ava opened the letter.
Her grandfather's handwriting filled the page.
*Ava,*
*If you are reading this, then you know the truth I spent my entire life trying to bury.*
*You were never chosen because you were the strongest. You were chosen because your mother believed you deserved a life untouched by my greed.*
*I spent years trying to find the child I thought was my heir. I never realized the girl I wanted was never the one I had taken.*
*By the time I understood, it was too late.*
Ava's eyes filled with tears.
She continued.
*Your father was innocent. Your mother was frightened. Lily was stolen from both of you. And I turned every mistake into another crime.*
*So I created one final condition.*
*If you chose the Mercedes, the money, the status, and the name Brooks, the trust would go to someone else.*
*If you rejected them, everything would become yours.*
*Not because you were greedy.*
*Because you proved you didn't need it.*
Ava lowered the letter.
Thomas looked at her.
“The trust is yours.””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone stared.
Ava folded the letter.
“I don't want it.””
Her father smiled.
“You just passed the test.””
Ava looked at Lily.
Then Maya.
Then Denise.
“I want the truth instead.””
Thomas nodded.
“Then that's what you'll get.””
Weeks later, the evidence from the vault cleared Ava's father completely.
The trust was dissolved, and Ava used the remaining assets to create a foundation for children separated from their families.
Lily became her closest partner.
Maya stayed too.
Not because of money.
Not because of the Mercedes.
But because, for the first time, none of them needed to pretend.
And on Ava's twenty-fifth birthday, she finally drove the red Toyota Highlander her stepfather had given her.
The same car she had once called second-best.
She stopped at a red light and looked at the reflection in the windshield.
She smiled.
Her phone buzzed.
A message from Lily appeared.
*Happy birthday, twin. Dinner tonight?*
Ava typed back:
*Wouldn't miss it.*
Then another message arrived.
From an unknown number.
Ava's smile disappeared.
There was only one sentence.
*Your grandfather didn't die naturally.*
Ava stared at the screen.
May you like
Then a second message appeared.
*And I know who killed him.*
