Chapter 9: The Night My Wife Died

Daniel didn't remember leaving Michael's office.

He remembered the administrator repeating Vanessa's name.

He remembered Michael taking the phone and requesting that the hospital preserve the original records.

He remembered Lily asking why everyone had gone quiet.

But everything else became a blur.

By the time he reached Caroline's house, his hands were shaking so badly that he had to sit in the driveway before he could unlock the front door.

Caroline opened it and immediately understood something was wrong.

“What happened?””

Daniel handed her the summary Michael had received.

She read it once.

Then she covered her mouth.

“Daniel…”

“The hospital says Vanessa requested a medication change shortly before Renee's condition deteriorated.””

Caroline lowered the paper.

“Does that mean she caused it?””

“No.”” Daniel forced the word out.

“We don't know that. The record needs to be examined by medical professionals and investigators. A request doesn't prove what happened afterward.””

“But she was there.””

“Yes.””

“And she lied about it.””

Daniel nodded.

Caroline sat beside him.

“What are you going to do?””

“Find out exactly what happened.””

That afternoon, Daniel met with investigators and authorized them to obtain the relevant hospital records through the proper process.

He gave them the recordings, the visitor log, Renee's financial documents, and Lily's account of the argument she remembered.

He did not claim to know what the evidence meant.

He only asked them to establish the facts.

Detective Sarah Collins, who had taken over the investigation into the threats and suspected financial misconduct, listened carefully.

“Mr. Carter, I need you to understand that medical treatment decisions can be complicated. A visitor requesting a change does not automatically mean the request was accepted, and an association with a patient's decline does not establish causation.””

Daniel nodded.

“I understand.””

“We'll seek the medication administration records, the treating physician's notes, and statements from the staff who were present.””

“And if someone deliberately interfered with her care?””

“Then we will investigate that possibility based on the evidence.””

Daniel looked down at the table.

“Renee spent her final months trying to protect our daughter. I need to know whether someone used that time to hurt her.””

Detective Collins softened her voice.

“I understand. But we need to let the evidence lead us.””

Two days later, the hospital released additional records to the investigators.

Daniel was invited to review a summary with Detective Collins and a medical records specialist.

The report showed that Vanessa had visited Renee on the evening of her final admission. During that visit, she had asked a nurse whether Renee's sedative could be increased because the patient was agitated and struggling to rest.

The nurse had documented the request.

The attending physician had later ordered a medication adjustment based on the clinical assessment.

There was no evidence in the initial records that Vanessa had administered medication herself.

Daniel felt a strange mixture of relief and dread.

“So Vanessa didn't change the medication?””

“Not according to the records we've reviewed,” Detective Collins replied.

“The order was made by the treating physician. We're still examining the circumstances surrounding the request, but there is currently no evidence that Vanessa personally administered anything.””

Daniel exhaled slowly.

He had spent two nights imagining the worst.

He was relieved that the records did not support his darkest fear.

But the next page raised another question.

A nurse had documented that Renee became distressed after a private conversation with Vanessa.

The note read:

Patient visibly upset following visitor discussion. Requested that visitor leave. Patient asked staff to contact husband.

Daniel stared at the words.

“She asked them to call me?””

“Yes,” the records specialist said.

“There is an entry indicating that a call was attempted at approximately 9:55 p.m.””

Daniel's chest tightened.

“Why didn't I receive it?””

Detective Collins turned to another page.

“The hospital's archived call log shows the number was dialed, but the call did not connect. A separate note says the patient was told her husband was unavailable.””

Daniel looked up sharply.

“I wasn't unavailable. I was at home.””

“We haven't established why the call failed or who told Renee that you couldn't be reached. We're investigating.””

Daniel pressed his palms against the table.

He had spent years blaming himself for not being there sooner.

Now he was learning that Renee had tried to reach him.

And somehow, the message had never reached him.

“What happened after the call?”” he asked.

The records specialist reviewed the timeline.

“Renee's condition worsened later that night. The medical team responded. You arrived shortly before midnight, according to the admission notes.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

He remembered walking into the room and seeing Renee beneath the white hospital blanket.

He remembered her hand feeling cold.

He remembered telling her he was there.

He had whispered apologies for not arriving sooner, though she was too weak to answer.

He had promised to take care of Lily.

He had promised that no one would ever make his daughter feel alone.

He had not known Renee had been asking for him.

When the meeting ended, Detective Collins accompanied him to the door.

“We're not treating this as proof that Vanessa caused your wife's death,” she said.

“But the discrepancies surrounding the call and the financial evidence warrant further investigation.””

Daniel nodded.

“Thank you.””

“And Mr. Carter?””

He turned.

“Please don't confront Vanessa about the hospital records. If she has relevant information, we need to obtain it through a formal interview.””

“I won't.””

That evening, Vanessa contacted Daniel through her attorney.

She requested a meeting.

Daniel initially refused.

Then he reconsidered.

If Vanessa knew something about Renee's final hours, he wanted her account documented.

The meeting took place in a conference room at Michael's office, with both attorneys present. Detective Collins had also arranged for the relevant statements to be collected separately, so Daniel was not expected to conduct an interrogation himself.

Vanessa entered wearing a gray dress and no jewelry.

She looked exhausted.

For a moment, Daniel remembered the woman who had held his hand after Renee's funeral.

Then he remembered the ashes in the backyard.

Vanessa sat opposite him.

“I know you hate me,” she said.

Daniel's expression remained still.

“This isn't about my feelings.””

She looked down at her hands.

“I went to the hospital that night because Richard told me Renee wanted to speak with me.””

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

“Richard sent you?””

“He said she was ready to give him the records.””

“And you believed him?””

“I wanted to believe him.””

“Why?””

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Because I was scared.””

She explained that Richard had promised her financial security if she helped him recover documents connected to Crestwood Capital. He had told her that Renee was preparing to report the transfers and that everyone involved would face financial ruin.

Vanessa insisted that she had not known the full extent of the misconduct.

Daniel listened without interrupting.

Finally, he asked, “Why did you tell me Renee left Lily nothing?””

Vanessa's face crumpled.

“Because Richard said the trust could be challenged if you believed Renee had hidden assets from you. He said if you signed the right documents, the money could be transferred into an account I managed.””

“You manipulated me into signing documents.””

“I thought it was temporary.””

“You let me believe my wife had left our daughter nothing.””

“I know.””

“And you burned her photographs.””

Vanessa began to cry.

“I was angry.””

“You were angry at a dead woman?””

“I was angry because she was still controlling everything!””

The words came out before Vanessa could stop herself.

Daniel stared at her.

Vanessa wiped her face.

“I spent years trying to make you see me as your wife. Every time you looked at Lily, I saw Renee. Every time you opened that album, I felt like I was living in someone else's shadow.””

“So you destroyed the pictures.””

“Yes.””

“And slapped Lily.””

Vanessa lowered her head.

“Yes.””

Daniel's voice became quieter.

“You frightened a twelve-year-old child because she loved her mother.””

Vanessa said nothing.

For a moment, the room was silent except for the air conditioner.

Then Daniel asked the question he had carried for four years.

“What happened in Renee's hospital room?””

Vanessa stared at the table.

“I asked her for the documents.””

“What did she say?””

“She refused.””

“Then what?””

Vanessa swallowed.

“She told me she knew about the money. She said she had copies of everything and that she would make sure Lily was protected.””

Daniel's jaw tightened.

“Did you threaten her?””

“I told her Richard would destroy us if she went to the authorities.””

“Did you tell her you would take Lily?””

Vanessa began to tremble.

“I said that if she didn't cooperate, Richard would make sure Lily ended up with someone else.””

Daniel closed his eyes briefly.

“And she asked you to leave?””

“Yes.””

“Then she asked the nurse to call me?””

Vanessa looked up sharply.

“How do you know that?””

“Answer the question.””

Vanessa nodded.

“She wanted you there. She said she needed to tell you something.””

Daniel felt a painful pressure in his chest.

“What was it?””

“I don't know. She wouldn't tell me.””

“Did you prevent the nurse from calling me?””

Vanessa shook her head quickly.

“No. I left before the nurse came back. I swear I didn't stop anyone from calling you.””

Daniel studied her face.

He wanted to believe that part.

But wanting something to be true was not the same as knowing it was true.

“Why didn't you tell me you were there?””

“Because I was afraid you'd find out about the documents.””

“And when I arrived, you told me you had been at home.””

Vanessa nodded.

“I lied.””

Daniel leaned back.

For the first time, Vanessa seemed unable to find an excuse.

She had admitted to deception, manipulation, and deliberate cruelty. But the question of Renee's death remained unresolved.

Daniel looked at both attorneys.

“This conversation needs to be documented and provided to the investigators.””

Vanessa nodded without protest.

Then she reached into her handbag and removed a folded piece of paper.

“I have something else.””

Her attorney immediately leaned forward.

“Vanessa, we should discuss that first.””

“No.”” She pushed the paper across the table.

“He needs to see it.””

Daniel didn't touch it.

“What is it?””

“A letter from Richard.””

Her attorney examined the page before allowing the investigators to receive it as evidence.

The letter was dated three days before Renee's final hospitalization.

It contained instructions concerning the transfer of financial records and the proposed guardianship arrangement.

Near the bottom, Richard had written:

Once Renee is unable to interfere, the remaining documents must be recovered before Daniel discovers the second account.

Daniel stared at the words.

“The second account?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Renee had another account. Richard believed it contained the original evidence.””

“Did he find it?””

“I don't know.””

Daniel looked at the letter again.

Then he noticed a handwritten line beneath Richard's signature.

If the first plan fails, contact Caroline.

Daniel's blood ran cold.

“Why is my sister's name here?””

Vanessa's face went pale.

“I don't know.””

But Daniel remembered the threatening message that had arrived after he found the Guardian file.

He remembered the unknown person warning him to ask his attorney who arranged Renee's trust.

And now Richard's letter connected Caroline to a plan that had begun before Renee died.

Daniel rose slowly.

“Is there anything else you haven't told me?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I've told you everything I know.””

Daniel looked at her for a long moment.

Then he turned toward Michael.

“Find out what Richard meant by the second account. And find out why he wrote Caroline's name.””

As Daniel left the conference room, his phone vibrated.

A message from Caroline appeared.

Daniel, we need to talk about Renee. There's something I should have told you years ago.

He stopped in the hallway.

Another message arrived.

I wasn't completely honest about the night she went to the hospital.

Daniel stared at the screen.

For four years, he had believed Caroline was the one person who had never lied to him.

Now, with every new piece of evidence, the truth seemed to move farther away.

He called her immediately.

She answered on the first ring.

“Daniel,” she whispered, “I'm sorry.””

“What aren't you telling me?””

Caroline began to cry.

Then she said the words that made his heart stop.

“I was the last person Renee called before Vanessa went to the hospital.””

Daniel gripped the phone.

“What did Renee tell you?””

Caroline's voice broke.

“She said she was afraid Vanessa wasn't working alone. And she begged me to protect Lily if anything happened to her.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Who else was involved?””

Caroline took a shaky breath.

May you like

Then she whispered a name.

“Your father.””
