Chapter 3: The Woman Who Lied About Everything

The following morning, Vanessa entered the kitchen wearing a silk robe and carrying a cup of coffee as if nothing had happened.

Lily sat at the table in her school uniform, staring at a bowl of untouched cereal. Her cheek was no longer bright red, but the faint outline of Vanessa's hand remained.

Daniel stood beside the counter, holding his phone.

When Vanessa saw him, she smiled.

“Good morning, darling.””

He didn't respond.

She set her cup down.

“Are you still upset about yesterday?””

Daniel looked at Lily.

“Sweetheart, do you want me to drive you to school?””

Lily nodded.

Vanessa sighed.

“She's perfectly capable of taking the bus. We shouldn't encourage her to become dependent on us every time she has a tantrum.””

Lily's spoon slipped from her fingers.

Daniel turned toward Vanessa.

“Don't speak about her that way.””

“I was only making a suggestion.””

“Then keep your suggestions to yourself.””

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

“You're humiliating me in front of your daughter.””

Daniel picked up Lily's backpack.

“I'm taking my daughter to school.””

As they walked toward the garage, Lily slipped her hand into his.

“Daddy?””

“Yes, sweetheart?””

“Are you going to make her leave?””

Daniel stopped beside the car.

He crouched so they were eye to eye.

“I haven't made every decision yet. But I promise you something. What happened yesterday will never be treated like it was your fault.””

Lily studied his face.

“Even if she says I started it?””

“Even then.””

She swallowed.

“Mommy used to say that grown-ups should make children feel safe.””

Daniel's eyes burned.

“She was right.””

Lily climbed into the car.

Before closing the door, she turned back.

“Daddy, what did you mean when you said something was hidden in the photograph?””

Daniel hesitated.

He had spent most of the night thinking about Renee's message and Michael's warning. He wanted to tell Lily everything, but she had already endured more than any child should.

“Your mother left me a clue,” he said carefully.

“I'm going to find out what it means.””

Lily looked down at her hands.

“Is it about Mommy?””

“Yes.””

“Then please don't let Vanessa destroy anything else.””

Daniel closed his eyes for a moment.

“I won't.””

After dropping Lily at school, Daniel drove directly to Michael's office.

The attorney had been working since dawn. Documents covered his desk, and two thick folders lay beside an open laptop.

“Sit down,” Michael said.

Daniel remained standing.

“Tell me what you know.””

Michael removed his glasses.

“Renee established a trust for Lily shortly after her diagnosis. It contained investments, proceeds from a life insurance policy, and funds connected to the house.””

Daniel frowned.

“I knew about the insurance policy. I thought the money went toward medical expenses.””

“Some of it did. But most of the proceeds were placed into the trust.””

“How much?””

Michael slid a document across the desk.

Daniel stared at the figure.

Nearly one million dollars.

He read it twice, convinced he had misunderstood.

“That's impossible.””

“It isn't. Renee's father left her a substantial inheritance, and she invested carefully. The insurance payout increased the total.””

“Why didn't I know?””

“You were informed about the trust when it was created. You signed documents acknowledging its existence.””

Daniel felt a wave of shame.

He remembered the paperwork.

Renee had been ill, and the hospital had called repeatedly. He had been working long hours, trying to keep his job while caring for his wife and daughter. Michael had brought documents to their home, explained them, and asked him to sign.

Daniel had read every page, or thought he had.

But he had never imagined that one day someone might try to take the money from his child.

“Who controls it?”” he asked.

“Under the original documents, you were appointed guardian of Lily's interests. You could manage certain expenses for her benefit, but you could not use the money for yourself.””

Daniel nodded slowly.

“And Vanessa?””

“She has no legal authority over the trust.””

“Then why did she tell me Renee left Lily nothing?””

Michael looked at him carefully.

“That's the question we need to answer.””

Daniel pulled out his phone and opened a photograph of the note from the burned picture.

Ask who paid for the house.

Michael studied the handwriting.

“I recognize this.””

“You've seen this before?””

“Not this exact note. But Renee was concerned about something in the months before she died.””

Daniel gripped the edge of the desk.

“What?””

“She came to see me privately. She wanted to make sure Lily's future couldn't be compromised if anything happened to her.””

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because Renee specifically asked me not to disclose the details unless certain conditions were met. She believed there might be pressure on you after her death.””

Daniel felt sick.

“Pressure from whom?””

Michael didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he opened a folder containing property records.

“Look at this.””

The deed listed Daniel and Renee as owners of the house. But beneath their names was a separate agreement establishing that Renee's contribution to the purchase was held for Lily's benefit.

When Renee died, her share did not automatically become Daniel's unrestricted property.

It passed according to the terms of the trust.

Daniel stared at the page.

“So Vanessa doesn't own any of it.””

“Not through Renee's estate, no. She may have marital rights concerning certain property depending on the circumstances, but she cannot simply claim ownership of assets held for Lily.””

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Vanessa told me the house was entirely mine. She said Renee had signed everything over before she died.””

Michael's expression hardened.

“Did you ever see that document?””

Daniel shook his head.

“No. Vanessa said she had found it in Renee's files.””

Michael leaned forward.

“Daniel, did you sign anything after marrying Vanessa that transferred property, changed beneficiaries, or altered the trust?””

Daniel tried to remember.

There had been paperwork.

Vanessa had brought him a stack of documents shortly after their wedding, explaining that their accountant needed updated information. He had signed several pages while getting ready for work.

She had told him it was routine.

One document had concerned insurance.

Another had concerned the house.

His stomach tightened.

“I might have.””

Michael closed his eyes briefly.

“Then we need those documents immediately.””

Daniel rose.

“I'll get them.””

“Don't confront Vanessa until we know what happened. And don't sign anything else.””

Daniel was halfway to the door when Michael spoke again.

“One more thing.””

He turned.

“The storage unit.””

Michael nodded toward the brass key on the desk.

“If Renee left you a message directing you there, whatever is inside may explain why she created those protections in the first place.””

Daniel took the key.

“I'm going today.””

“Go alone. And call me the moment you find anything.””

The storage facility sat behind a row of auto-repair shops on the outskirts of Austin. The morning sun beat against the corrugated metal roofs, and the air smelled of hot asphalt.

Daniel found unit 214.

The brass key turned with a dry click.

Inside stood three cardboard boxes, a locked filing cabinet, and a small wooden chest.

Dust covered everything.

Daniel stepped inside and lifted the first box.

It contained Lily's baby clothes, Renee's favorite books, and a stack of birthday cards. He recognized the tiny yellow blanket Lily had been wrapped in as a newborn.

He set it aside carefully.

The second box contained financial records, bank statements, and copies of legal documents.

The third contained photographs.

Dozens of them.

Renee holding Lily on the beach. Renee asleep on the sofa with a book resting on her chest. Renee laughing in the garden.

Daniel sank onto a folding chair.

She had saved everything.

Not because she couldn't let go.

Because she had known that someday someone might try to make her disappear.

He opened the filing cabinet.

Inside, he found a sealed envelope with his name written across the front.

For Daniel. Only if the photographs are destroyed.

His hands began to tremble.

He tore the envelope open.

The letter inside was several pages long, written in Renee's familiar handwriting.

My love,

If you're reading this, then something has happened that I feared but hoped would never come to pass. Someone has tried to erase me from Lily's life.

Daniel stopped reading.

He pressed the letter to his mouth, fighting the sob that rose in his throat.

Then he continued.

I need you to understand something. I didn't hide these things because I distrusted you. I hid them because I knew grief could make you vulnerable, and I was afraid someone might use your loneliness to get close to our daughter.

Please look inside the wooden chest.

Daniel lowered the letter.

The chest stood beneath the filing cabinet.

He knelt and opened it.

Inside lay a small digital recorder, several envelopes, and a sealed folder bearing the name of his late wife's former employer.

At the bottom was a photograph of Vanessa.

Daniel froze.

It showed Vanessa standing outside a bank, speaking to a man Daniel recognized immediately.

The man was Richard Hale, Renee's former business partner.

On the back, Renee had written a date.

Three months before she died.

Beneath it were seven words.

Vanessa knows what happened to the money.

Daniel stared at the photograph until the room seemed to tilt around him.

Then his phone rang.

It was Lily's school.

“Mr. Carter?”” the receptionist said.

“I'm calling because your daughter has asked to speak with you urgently.””

Daniel stood.

“Is she hurt?””

“No, sir. But there's a woman here claiming to be her mother.””

His blood ran cold.

“My daughter's mother is dead.””

“I understand, sir. That's why we're concerned.””

Daniel tightened his grip on the phone.

“Who is the woman?””

The receptionist hesitated.

“She says her name is Vanessa Carter. And she has a document proving she has the right to take Lily out of school.””

Daniel looked down at the photograph in his hand.

Then he heard his daughter's voice in the background.

“That's a lie! My mom is dead!””

The call ended abruptly.

Daniel ran toward his car.

May you like

Because whatever Vanessa had been hiding, she had just made her next move.

And this time, she was trying to take Lily with her.
