Chapter 6: The Attorney Who Knew Too Much
Daniel didn't show Michael the message immediately.
He watched the attorney's face instead.
For years, Michael had been the person Daniel trusted with his family's most private matters. He had handled the house purchase, reviewed the insurance policy, and prepared the trust that was supposed to protect Lily's future.
Yet now, when Daniel mentioned Renee's original trust, Michael had gone pale.
“Who arranged it?”” Daniel asked.
Michael removed his glasses and cleaned them with a handkerchief.
“Daniel, there are things I need to verify before I answer that.””
“That's not an answer.””
“I understand.””
“No, I don't think you do.”” Daniel placed his phone on the desk, displaying the threatening message.
“Someone knows what we found. Someone knows about the Guardian file. And they're telling me to ask you a question.””
Michael stared at the screen.
“Did you respond?””
“No.””
“Good. Don't.””
Daniel leaned forward.
“Tell me who arranged Renee's trust.””
Michael remained silent for several seconds.
Then he closed the office door.
“Your wife's trust was originally prepared by another attorney. I reviewed it later and became involved when Renee asked me to make amendments.””
“Who was the original attorney?””
“Thomas Whitmore.””
Daniel felt a cold pressure build behind his ribs.
“Vanessa's father?””
“Yes.””
“You let the father of the woman I married handle my dead wife's inheritance?””
Michael flinched.
“I didn't know you would marry Vanessa when I first became involved. Thomas was a respected estate attorney at the time. Renee approached him through a professional referral.””
“Did you know he was connected to Richard Hale?””
“Not when I reviewed the trust.””
Daniel pushed his chair back.
“Then why did you never tell me?””
“Because Renee asked me to preserve the confidentiality of certain documents while the financial investigation was ongoing. I knew she had concerns about Richard, but I didn't know the full extent of his relationship with Vanessa.””
“You knew enough to be suspicious.””
“Yes.””
“And you said nothing.””
Michael looked down.
“I should have explained more when you came to me after Renee died. I believed the trust was secure, and I didn't want to add to your grief without sufficient evidence.””
Daniel laughed bitterly.
“So you decided I couldn't handle the truth?””
“No. I made a judgment that I now regret.””
Daniel turned toward the window.
Outside, office workers crossed the parking lot with lunch bags and coffee cups. The ordinary world continued, indifferent to the fact that his family might have been built around a lie.
He thought about Lily sitting alone at the school office.
He thought about Vanessa telling his daughter that she was unwanted.
And he thought about Renee, sick and frightened, trying to protect their child while the people around her smiled and pretended to help.
“Is my daughter safe?”” Daniel asked.
Michael stood.
“We have evidence of threats and possible financial misconduct. But we don't yet know who sent those messages or whether the sender intends to act on them. You should keep Lily with trusted family, inform the police of any new contact, and pursue appropriate legal protections.””
Daniel nodded.
“I'm taking her to Caroline's until this is settled.””
“That's sensible.””
“And Vanessa is not going near her.””
Michael paused.
“We need to handle that through the appropriate legal process. I'll help you understand your options.””
Daniel picked up the Guardian document.
“What does this actually prove?””
“It shows Renee was concerned about Vanessa's interest in Lily's inheritance and had rejected her as an alternate guardian. The email is significant, but we need to authenticate it and establish its full context.””
“And the money?””
“We'll request the financial records necessary to trace the transfers. If the evidence supports suspected fraud, we'll refer it to the relevant authorities.””
Daniel put the documents back into the folder.
“Then let's do it.””
Before leaving, he turned back.
“One more question.””
Michael looked up.
“Did Renee know she was dying when she recorded that message?””
“Yes,” Michael said quietly.
“She knew her time might be limited.””
Daniel swallowed.
“Did she ever ask you to tell me something personally?””
Michael hesitated.
“She asked me to tell you that grief can make a person accept things they would normally question. She wanted you to be careful about anyone who offered easy answers when you were at your most vulnerable.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
That was exactly what Vanessa had done.
She had appeared when he could barely sleep, when Lily cried herself to sleep, when every room in the house reminded him of the woman he had lost.
Vanessa had offered order.
She had offered companionship.
She had offered a fresh beginning.
And while Daniel was grateful for the relief, he had stopped questioning her.
When he reached Caroline's house that evening, Lily was sitting at the kitchen table drawing a picture of her mother.
She had drawn Renee in a blue dress, standing beside a small girl beneath a bright yellow sun.
Caroline was preparing dinner.
“How did it go?”” she asked.
Daniel set the folder on the counter.
“Worse than I expected.””
Caroline turned off the stove.
“What did you find?””
Daniel showed her the email and explained the connection between Thomas Whitmore, Richard Hale, and the original trust.
Caroline's expression grew increasingly troubled.
“So Vanessa may have married you because of Renee's money?””
“We don't know everything yet.””
“But she was discussing your family with Richard two years before the wedding.””
Daniel nodded.
Caroline shook her head.
“I can't believe it.””
Neither could he.
Upstairs, a floorboard creaked.
Lily appeared in the doorway.
“Are you talking about Mommy?””
Daniel quickly gathered the documents.
“A little, sweetheart.””
“Did you find something?””
He looked at Caroline, who gave him a small nod.
Daniel knelt beside his daughter.
“Your mother worked very hard to protect your future. We're trying to understand what she left behind.””
Lily considered this.
“Does that mean Vanessa wanted my money?””
Daniel struggled to answer.
“We have some evidence that raises questions about what she wanted. The adults who are investigating will help us find out what really happened.””
Lily's eyes filled with tears.
“I knew she didn't love me.””
Daniel took her hands.
“What Vanessa did to you was wrong. But her behavior doesn't determine how lovable you are. You are kind, intelligent, and deeply loved. Do you understand?””
Lily nodded slowly.
“Would Mommy be mad at me for hating Vanessa?””
Daniel shook his head.
“Your mother would want you to be safe. You don't have to decide how you feel about Vanessa right now.””
Lily leaned against him.
“I just want our old house back.””
Daniel kissed her forehead.
“I'm going to do everything I can to make sure you have a home where you feel safe.””
That night, after Lily went to bed, Daniel returned to the kitchen.
His phone rang.
The caller ID displayed Vanessa's name.
He considered letting it go to voicemail.
Then he answered.
“What do you want?””
Vanessa sounded breathless.
“Daniel, we need to talk.””
“About what?””
“About Lily. About the house. About everything that's happened.””
“You had your chance to explain yourself.””
“I made a mistake with the photographs. I know that now.””
Daniel stared at the dark window.
“You destroyed them deliberately.””
“I was angry.””
“You slapped a child.””
“She screamed at me!””
“She was trying to save her mother's pictures!””
Vanessa began crying.
It was a familiar sound. In the past, it had always made Daniel soften his voice.
This time, he remained silent.
Finally, she spoke again.
“Richard told me you found something.””
Daniel's entire body went still.
“Richard?””
Vanessa stopped crying.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Daniel asked quietly, “How do you know I've been looking into Richard?””
“I didn't mean—”
“You just told me he knows what I've found.””
“Daniel, please. You're misunderstanding.””
“Then explain it.””
She inhaled sharply.
“Your attorney has been manipulating you. Renee was sick, and she became paranoid about money. Richard was trying to help her.””
“Then why did you tell him you needed me to trust you before the time came?””
Silence.
Daniel felt his heartbeat in his throat.
“How do you know about that email?”” Vanessa whispered.
He didn't answer.
Her breathing changed.
Then she said something that made the hair rise on Daniel's arms.
“Because Richard told me that document had been destroyed.””
Daniel stared at the phone.
Vanessa had just admitted she knew the document existed.
And if she knew the document existed, she knew exactly what Renee had been trying to hide.
“Vanessa,” he said, “what happened to Renee's money?””
She began to cry again.
“I didn't take it.””
“Your company received the transfers.””
“Richard handled the accounts!””
“Then why did you lie to me about Renee leaving Lily nothing?””
Vanessa's voice dropped.
“Because if you knew the truth, you would never have married me.””
Daniel closed his eyes.
There it was.
The answer he had been dreading.
But before he could speak, Vanessa continued.
“Daniel, listen to me. I didn't know what Richard planned to do when I first met you. I swear. My father said the money was tied up in legal complications, and Richard promised everything could be fixed.””
“Fixed how?””
“By getting control of the trust.””
Daniel gripped the edge of the counter.
“Through Lily?””
Vanessa didn't answer.
“Vanessa, answer me!””
“I was supposed to become her guardian if something happened to you!””
The kitchen fell silent.
Daniel could barely breathe.
“What did you just say?””
Vanessa's voice trembled.
“Richard said the guardianship documents would give me access to the funds. He said it was legal.””
“And you believed him?””
“I didn't understand everything!””
“You married me knowing you wanted control over my daughter's inheritance?””
“I loved you!””
Daniel let out a hollow laugh.
“Then why did you try to take her from school?””
“Because you found the files!””
He froze.
Vanessa realized what she had said.
“Daniel, I—”
“Who sent the messages?””
“I don't know what you're talking about.””
“Who was watching Lily outside her school?””
“I didn't send anyone!””
“Then who did?””
She began speaking rapidly.
“Richard said you would ruin everything if you found out. He said your attorney would turn you against me. He said we had to get Lily somewhere safe until we could resolve the trust.””
“Safe from whom?””
“From you!””
Daniel stared at the phone in disbelief.
Vanessa's voice cracked.
“Daniel, I was trying to protect myself. You don't understand what Richard is capable of.””
“Then tell me.””
She hesitated.
Finally, she whispered, “Richard has something that could destroy my father. Something he used to make us cooperate.””
“What is it?””
“I don't know all the details.””
“Vanessa!””
“I know where he keeps the original records. I can tell you where to find them.””
Daniel felt a surge of anger.
“You expect me to trust you now?””
“No. But you need to understand something. The money wasn't the only reason Richard wanted Lily's guardianship.””
Daniel's grip tightened.
“What else did he want?””
Vanessa took a shaky breath.
“He wanted to find out what Renee had hidden before she died.””
Daniel looked toward the stairs, where his daughter slept.
“What did Renee hide?””
Vanessa's answer came in a whisper.
“The original evidence against Richard.””
The line went dead.
Daniel lowered the phone.
For several seconds, he remained motionless.
Then another message appeared.
This time, it came from a number he recognized.
Richard Hale.
Vanessa has told you enough. Bring the Guardian file to the old Crestwood office tomorrow at noon, or the next secret you discover will be about Lily.
Daniel stared at the message.
The threat was unmistakable.
But beneath it, there was something else.
A photograph.
It showed a locked filing cabinet inside an office building.
On the cabinet was a handwritten label.
*RENEE CARTER — ORIGINAL RECORDS.*
Daniel immediately called the police and forwarded the message.
Then he called Michael.
“We have a location,” he said.
“Richard says Renee's original evidence is inside the old Crestwood office.””
Michael's voice was tense.
“Do not go there alone. We need to coordinate with the authorities.””
Daniel looked at the photograph one more time.
For four years, he had believed his wife's death had left him with unanswered questions and painful memories.
Now he understood that someone had spent those same four years making sure the answers stayed buried.

And if Richard Hale was threatening Lily to keep them hidden, Daniel knew one thing with absolute certainty.
He would not allow another person to hurt his daughter just to protect a lie.
