Chapter 4: The Woman Who Tried to Take My Daughter

Daniel drove through three red lights before he reached Lily's school.

His phone lay on the passenger seat, connected to the receptionist's call. He had barely heard the final words before the line went dead.

Vanessa was at the school.

With a document claiming she had the right to take Lily.

Daniel's hands tightened around the steering wheel until his knuckles turned white.

“What are you doing?”” he whispered to himself.

“What the hell are you doing, Vanessa?””

He had married her because she had seemed kind. She brought meals to grieving families, volunteered at charity events, and knew exactly what to say when someone was hurting.

When Daniel had struggled through his first Christmas without Renee, Vanessa had sat beside him on the sofa and held his hand.

“I won't ever try to replace her,” she'd promised.

“I just want to help you raise Lily.””

He had believed her.

Now he wondered whether that promise had been another performance.

When he pulled into the school parking lot, a security guard was standing beside the main entrance. Through the glass doors, Daniel spotted Lily sitting in the principal's office.

Vanessa stood opposite her in a tailored navy suit, holding a folder.

She looked composed.

Lily looked terrified.

Daniel shoved open the entrance door.

“Lily!””

His daughter sprang from the chair and ran toward him.

“Daddy!””

She collided with his chest, wrapping both arms around his waist.

Daniel held her tightly.

“I'm here, sweetheart. I'm here.””

Lily buried her face in his shirt.

“She said you gave her permission to take me away.””

Daniel looked over his daughter's head.

Vanessa closed the folder.

“Daniel, you're making a scene.””

He stared at her.

“You came to my daughter's school and tried to remove her without telling me?””

“I was trying to resolve a problem.””

“What problem?””

Vanessa glanced at the principal, Mrs. Bennett, who sat behind her desk with a deeply troubled expression.

“Perhaps we should discuss this privately.””

“No. Explain it here.””

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

She turned to Lily, her voice suddenly gentle.

“Sweetheart, I was only trying to help. You know your father has been very upset lately.””

Lily clutched Daniel's hand.

“Don't talk to me.””

Vanessa's eyes narrowed for a fraction of a second before she faced Daniel again.

“I have a signed authorization allowing me to make educational and residential decisions for Lily. I thought it would be best if she stayed with my sister for a few days while you calmed down.””

Daniel stared at her.

“My sister lives three hours away.””

“Exactly. A little distance might help everyone.””

“Did Lily agree to go?””

“She is twelve. She doesn't get to make every decision.””

Mrs. Bennett cleared her throat.

“Mrs. Carter, you presented a document that appears to authorize you to collect Lily. However, when we contacted Mr. Carter, he denied giving you permission to remove her from school.””

Vanessa's expression hardened.

“Daniel signed that document.””

“Then you won't mind if we verify it,” Daniel replied.

He held out his hand.

“Give me the paper.””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Why?””

“Because I want to see what I supposedly signed.””

She passed him the folder.

Daniel opened it.

The first page contained a photocopy of his signature beneath a paragraph authorizing Vanessa to make certain decisions regarding Lily's care.

His signature looked genuine.

But the date was wrong.

The authorization had supposedly been signed six weeks earlier, on a day Daniel remembered clearly. He had spent that afternoon at a hospital with a close friend whose wife was undergoing emergency surgery.

He had not been home.

More importantly, the document contained language he had never seen before.

It authorized Vanessa to arrange temporary residential placement for Lily without his presence.

Daniel looked up.

“I never signed this.””

Vanessa folded her arms.

“Don't lie just because you're angry.””

“I said I never signed it.””

“You signed dozens of documents when we got married. You probably don't remember.””

“Then why is this dated six weeks ago?””

For the first time, Vanessa looked uncertain.

Mrs. Bennett took the document from Daniel and examined it.

“We'll need to retain a copy and verify its authenticity before permitting any unusual collection arrangements. Until then, Lily will remain under her father's care, consistent with our records.””

Vanessa's composure cracked.

“You cannot keep me from my own stepdaughter!””

Mrs. Bennett remained calm.

“I'm not making a family-law determination. I'm following our safeguarding procedures.””

Daniel slipped an arm around Lily's shoulders.

“Come on, sweetheart. We're going home.””

Vanessa stepped in front of them.

“You're not leaving until we finish this conversation.””

Daniel stopped.

“Move.””

“Daniel, think carefully. You have no idea what you're throwing away.””

He looked at the woman he had married.

“I know exactly what I'm protecting.””

For a moment, Vanessa's face twisted with fury.

Then she stepped aside.

As Daniel guided Lily toward the door, Vanessa called after him.

“You'll regret humiliating me!””

He didn't turn around.

Outside, Lily climbed into the passenger seat of Daniel's car and buckled herself in. She sat silently until he started the engine.

Then she whispered, “Daddy, am I going to have to live with Aunt Caroline?””

“No.””

“But she said you wanted me gone.””

Daniel turned toward her.

“I never said that.””

“She told me you were tired of me talking about Mommy. She said you wanted a fresh start with her, and I was making it impossible.””

Daniel felt something tear inside his chest.

“Oh, sweetheart.””

He reached across the console and took her hand.

“Listen to me. You are not a problem I need to solve. You are my daughter. You belong with me, and you always will.””

Lily's eyes filled with tears.

“Then why does she hate Mommy so much?””

Daniel had no easy answer.

He thought of the burned photographs, the brass key, the photograph of Vanessa outside the bank, and Renee's warning about someone using his grief.

“I don't know everything yet,” he admitted.

“But I'm going to find out.””

Lily stared out the window.

“Mommy wouldn't have wanted us to fight.””

“No,” Daniel said quietly.

“She wouldn't.””

“Then maybe you should just let Vanessa keep the house.””

Daniel pulled the car to the side of the road.

He turned off the engine.

“Why would you say that?””

“Because she gets angry whenever we talk about Mommy. And she says if we keep upsetting her, she'll leave and we'll lose everything.””

Daniel stared at his daughter, horrified.

“Has she been telling you that for a long time?””

Lily nodded.

“Sometimes she says we're lucky she stayed. She says nobody else would want to raise a child who's always crying about a dead mother.””

Daniel closed his eyes.

For months, he had mistaken Lily's silence for adjustment.

He had mistaken Vanessa's complaints for ordinary disagreements between a stepparent and a child.

He had failed to see the fear his daughter had learned to carry.

He pulled Lily into his arms.

“You should never have had to hear those things.””

She began to cry.

“I miss Mommy.””

“I know.””

“I miss the way she smelled. Her lotion. Her hair oil. I can't remember her voice properly anymore.””

Daniel held her until her sobs softened.

“Then we'll remember together.””

When they finally arrived home, Daniel called Michael Harris and explained everything that had happened at the school.

Michael listened without interrupting.

When Daniel finished, the attorney said, “Bring the authorization to my office. Don't let Vanessa take the original, and don't sign anything she gives you.””

“I found something else at the storage unit.””

“What?””

“A photograph of Vanessa with Richard Hale. Renee wrote that Vanessa knew what happened to the money.””

Michael went silent.

“Richard Hale?”” he repeated.

“Yes.””

“Daniel, I need you to tell me exactly where you found that photograph.””

Daniel explained about the wooden chest and the sealed folder.

Michael's voice grew grave.

“Do not open that folder until you bring it here.””

“Why?””

“Because Richard Hale was investigated for financial misconduct several years ago. The case was closed after the evidence disappeared.””

Daniel felt cold.

“Was Renee involved?””

“She provided information to investigators shortly before she became ill.””

Daniel gripped the phone.

“Why didn't you tell me?””

“Because I was bound by confidentiality, and because Renee asked me to protect Lily's interests. I had no reason to believe the matter would become relevant again.””

Daniel looked toward the house.

Vanessa's car was parked in the driveway.

Through the front window, he could see her moving from room to room, pulling curtains closed.

Then his phone buzzed.

An unknown number had sent him a message.

Stop digging into Renee's past if you want Lily to remain safe.

A second message arrived before he could respond.

It contained a photograph of Lily standing outside her school that morning.

Taken from across the street.

Daniel's blood ran cold.

May you like

Whoever had sent the message had been watching his daughter.

And they knew exactly where she was.
