Chapter 8: My Mother's Last Warning

Nobody spoke.

I stared at Rebecca.

“Read it again.””

She looked down at the document.

“Your mother believed someone had deliberately altered information connected to Nia's birth records.””

I looked toward Vanessa.

She was shaking her head.

“This is insane.””

Rebecca continued reading.

“The statement was sealed with instructions that it could only be released if evidence of financial misconduct or an attempt to interfere with Nia's inheritance came to light.””

I felt my legs weaken.

My mother had anticipated something like this.

She had left instructions.

She had protected Nia even after she was gone.

I sat down.

“Where is the original statement?””

“Your mother's estate attorney has it. I've already requested a certified copy.””

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You can't use something my mother-in-law wrote six years ago as evidence against me.””

Rebecca closed the folder.

“It's not being used to establish guilt. It's a statement that warrants further investigation.””

I looked at my wife.

“What happened when Nia was born?””

She started crying.

“Daniel, please.””

“Answer me.””

She sat down.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She looked at Nia.

Then at Malik.

Finally, she whispered:

“I wasn't supposed to be able to have another child.””

I frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“After Sophie was born, I had complications. The doctors told me another pregnancy would be dangerous.””

I remembered the difficult pregnancy we'd gone through.

The hospital visits.

The weeks when Vanessa was confined to bed.

The emergency delivery.

I remembered holding Nia for the first time and promising my mother I would protect her.

“What does that have to do with the birth records?””

Vanessa looked away.

“Your mother thought I had lied about something.””

Rebecca waited.

Vanessa finally continued.

“When I became pregnant with Nia, the doctors told me there was a complication with the paperwork. Some of the original records had been entered incorrectly.””

“Which records?””

“The donor records.””

I stared at her.

“What donor records?””

Vanessa began sobbing.

“Daniel, I didn't know how to tell you.””

My mind went blank.

“Are you saying Nia wasn't biologically mine?””

She shook her head.

“No. You're her father.””

I didn't understand.

She explained that during the fertility treatment, the clinic had used donor genetic material as part of the procedure. She claimed she had been told that the donor information would remain confidential and that the records were only administrative.

But my mother's statement suggested something much more complicated.

Rebecca interrupted.

“We need the original medical records before making assumptions. This is precisely why the statement matters.””

I looked at Vanessa.

“Did you know about this before we got married?””

She shook her head.

“Not everything.””

“That's not an answer.””

She lowered her eyes.

“I knew there had been a mistake.””

I felt as though the walls were closing in.

“Did you know what the mistake was?””

Vanessa remained silent.

Malik stepped forward.

“Dad, there's something else.””

I turned toward him.

“What?””

He looked uncomfortable.

“I heard Vanessa talking to someone on the phone last month.””

Vanessa immediately snapped.

“Malik, don't.””

He continued.

“She said Nia might have inherited something from the donor's family.””

Rebecca stopped writing.

“What exactly did she say?””

Malik searched his memory.

“She said, 'If the records are correct, that little girl could be worth more than the entire company.''”

I looked at Vanessa.

She covered her face.

“Who were you talking to?””

She didn't answer.

Rebecca took out her phone.

“Daniel, I want to be very clear. We should not assume anything about Nia's biological background until the records are authenticated. But if someone has been using private medical information to influence financial decisions, that creates another serious concern.””

I nodded.

Then I remembered the strange name in my mother's photograph.

The man standing behind her.

I pulled it from my pocket.

“Who is this?””

Vanessa glanced at the picture.

Her eyes widened.

“Where did you get that?””

“Ethan gave it to me.””

She looked away.

Rebecca examined the photograph.

“Do you recognize him?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“Yes.””

“Who is he?””

She swallowed.

“His name is Richard Hale.””

I searched my memory.

The name meant nothing.

“Who is Richard Hale?””

Vanessa took a breath.

“He was connected to the fertility clinic.””

Rebecca looked up sharply.

“Which clinic?””

Vanessa named a private medical center in Cleveland.

Rebecca wrote it down.

Then she asked:

“Did Richard Hale have any financial relationship with your mother-in-law?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don't know.””

I stared at the photograph.

My mother had met this man.

She had met Vanessa.

And she had taken steps to protect Nia.

Why?

My phone vibrated.

An email had arrived from my mother's estate attorney.

The subject line read:

*URGENT: SEALED TESTAMENTARY STATEMENT — NIA CARTER*

I opened it.

The attached document contained my mother's signature and a date from six years earlier.

I began reading.

Daniel, if you're reading this, something has happened that I feared but hoped would never come to pass.

My hands trembled.

I continued.

I discovered evidence that the fertility clinic involved in Nia's conception may have made an unauthorized disclosure concerning the identity of a genetic donor. I also discovered that a member of our family had been asking questions about that donor's estate.

I stopped.

A member of our family.

I looked at Ethan.

He was standing near the hallway.

“Did you know about this?””

He shook his head.

But he looked terrified.

I continued reading.

I established Nia's trust because I learned that the donor's family had made provisions for a child who might one day be identified. I did not want money to become the reason anyone claimed to love my granddaughter.

My eyes moved to the next paragraph.

Most importantly, Daniel, do not allow anyone to use Nia's identity to obtain control of her inheritance. The person who knows the truth is not Vanessa.

I froze.

The next sentence was underlined.

It is Ethan.

I slowly lifted my head.

My brother was staring at me.

“Ethan?””

He didn't move.

Rebecca stood.

“Daniel, don't confront him until we understand what this means.””

But I was already looking at the man I had trusted most in the world.

My brother finally spoke.

“Mom shouldn't have left that letter.””

I felt my heart pounding.

“Why?””

He looked toward Nia.

May you like

Then he said:

“Because she knew I was the one who contacted the donor's family.””
