Chapter 3: The Woman Who Had Been Watching My Children

Rebecca entered the house and placed her folder on the kitchen counter.

The woman behind her introduced herself as Patricia Moore, a licensed child welfare investigator.

Vanessa immediately stepped backward.

“This is harassment.””

Patricia remained calm.

“Mrs. Carter, I'm here because concerns were raised about the children's access to food and their general welfare. I would like to speak with both children privately.””

Vanessa laughed.

“You're seriously investigating me because my husband had a bad evening?””

Patricia opened her notebook.

“I'm investigating because we received information supported by photographs, financial records, and statements from the children.””

Vanessa looked at me.

“You planned this.””

“No,” I said.

“I planned to protect them.””

Rebecca removed several pages from her folder.

“Daniel, before we discuss the financial transfers, I need to establish something. Did you authorize Vanessa to withdraw money from the household account for personal purchases?””

“I authorized reasonable household expenses.””

“Did you authorize her to transfer money into an account under her maiden name?””

“No.””

Vanessa interrupted.

“That money was mine.””

Rebecca looked at her.

“Then why were the transfers labeled as groceries and school expenses?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Rebecca continued.

“The account received $86,400 over fourteen months. We have records showing that at least $31,000 was spent on luxury shopping, restaurant bills, and personal travel.””

I stared at the figures.

Eighty-six thousand dollars.

Meanwhile, my daughter had been eating crackers.

“Where did the rest go?”” I asked.

Rebecca hesitated.

“That's what we're trying to determine.””

Vanessa grabbed the back of a chair.

“You're making it sound like I stole something.””

Rebecca didn't raise her voice.

“I'm saying the transactions require explanation.””

Patricia gently approached Nia.

“Sweetheart, would you like to talk with me somewhere quiet?””

Nia looked at me.

I knelt beside her.

“You can tell her the truth. Nobody is going to punish you for speaking.””

Nia nodded and followed Patricia toward the living room.

Malik went with them.

Vanessa watched the children leave.

Then she turned on me.

“You're destroying this family.””

I looked at her.

“You destroyed something the moment you made a ten-year-old afraid to ask for dinner.””

She shook her head.

“You have no idea how difficult my life has been.””

I almost laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because I had spent years listening to her complain about the sacrifices she made while overlooking the sacrifices everyone else was making for her.

I worked twelve-hour days.

I traveled across three states to keep my construction company profitable.

I had missed birthdays and school performances.

But every time I asked whether the children were happy, Vanessa told me they were doing wonderfully.

I had believed her.

That was my mistake.

Rebecca turned another page.

“There's something else.””

She showed me a copy of the account registration.

The account under Vanessa's maiden name had been opened six years earlier.

Before we were married.

Before we bought our current house.

Before she became the primary caregiver for my children.

“What am I looking at?”” I asked.

“An account that has been receiving transfers from an outside source.””

“Whose source?””

Rebecca pointed to the name printed near the bottom.

I recognized it immediately.

My younger brother.

Ethan Carter.

I stared at the page.

“That can't be right.””

Vanessa quickly stepped forward.

“Don't listen to her.””

Rebecca continued.

“Several payments came from Ethan's private investment company. The latest transfer was $18,000, deposited three weeks ago.””

I felt cold.

Ethan and I had grown up together.

He had been my best friend long before he became my business partner.

He was the person I called when my father died.

He was the person who stood beside me at my wedding.

And now his name was appearing beside my wife's secret bank account.

“Why would Ethan send you money?”” I asked.

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

“Daniel, please. There are things you don't understand.””

“Then explain them.””

She looked toward the living room.

“Not in front of the children.””

“Why?””

“Because I don't want them involved.””

I stared at her.

“They've been involved every time they went to bed hungry.””

She covered her face.

For a moment, I thought she might finally tell the truth.

Instead, she lowered her hands and said something I never expected.

“Ethan was helping me because you were supposed to be gone.””

I stopped breathing for a second.

“Gone where?””

Vanessa looked at the floor.

Rebecca slowly closed her folder.

“Daniel, I think we should hear the rest of this carefully.””

I turned toward my wife.

“What does she mean?””

Vanessa's shoulders began to shake.

“I didn't mean forever.””

“Then what did you mean?””

She looked at me.

“I thought you were going to die.””

The room went silent.

I stared at her.

“What?””

She swallowed.

“Last year, when you had that accident on the highway, the doctors said you might not recover. Ethan told me I needed to protect myself financially.””

My accident.

I remembered the night vividly.

A truck had crossed into my lane during a storm. My vehicle rolled twice before landing against a concrete barrier.

I spent four days in the hospital.

Vanessa visited twice.

She told me she couldn't bear seeing me connected to machines.

At the time, I thought she was overwhelmed.

Now I wondered what she had been doing during those hospital hours.

Rebecca opened her folder again.

“Daniel, there's an additional document we found in the account records.””

She placed a photocopy on the counter.

It was a draft of a beneficiary designation.

My name appeared at the top.

Vanessa's name appeared below it.

But the date was strange.

It was dated three days after my accident.

I looked closer.

The document claimed I had authorized Vanessa to receive control of several business assets in the event of my death or permanent incapacity.

“I never signed this.””

Rebecca nodded.

“We know. The signature appears inconsistent with your verified signature. Our financial investigator has recommended a forensic examination.””

Vanessa began crying.

“Ethan said it was just paperwork.””

I stepped closer.

“Did you know what you were signing?””

“I didn't sign it!””

“Then why did you tell me Ethan was helping you?””

She covered her mouth.

Patricia returned from the living room with Nia and Malik.

Both children looked shaken.

Nia walked straight toward me.

“Daddy?””

I wrapped my arms around her.

“I'm here, baby.””

She whispered something into my shoulder.

“Is Vanessa going to be angry with us?””

I closed my eyes.

“No. You haven't done anything wrong.””

Malik stood beside us.

“Dad, there's one more thing.””

I turned toward him.

He looked at Vanessa, then at Rebecca.

“There's a reason she doesn't want Nia eating the food.””

Vanessa snapped.

“Malik, don't!””

My son reached into his pocket and pulled out a small notebook.

“I found this in her bedroom.””

He handed it to me.

The pages contained dates, household expenses, and several handwritten notes.

Most of them were ordinary financial calculations.

But one entry made my blood run cold.

If Daniel returns to work full-time, continue keeping Nia dependent and quiet. Malik is becoming a problem.

Below that was another line.

The children must not tell him about Ethan.

I read it twice.

Then I looked at my wife.

“Why did you write this?””

Vanessa backed away.

“You don't understand what you're reading.””

I held up the notebook.

“Then help me understand.””

She stared at the page.

Her lips trembled.

Finally, she whispered:

“Because Nia isn't the child Ethan is worried about.””

I looked at my daughter.

Then back at Vanessa.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa glanced toward the front door.

And at that exact moment, someone outside knocked three times.

Rebecca checked her phone.

May you like

Her face went pale.

“Daniel,” she said quietly, “that's Ethan.””
