Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Empty Plates
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The only sound was the refrigerator humming in the kitchen.
I looked directly at Vanessa.
“What money?””
She blinked.
“Nothing.””
“You just said I didn't know what happened to the money.””
“I was talking about household expenses.””
I glanced at the seafood spread.
“Household expenses?””
Vanessa pushed her plate away.
“Daniel, you're twisting my words.””
Malik slowly stood.
“Dad, she's lying.””
Vanessa turned toward him.
“Sit down.””
“No.””
It was the first time I'd heard my son refuse her so directly.
Vanessa pointed at him.
“You are sixteen years old. You don't get to disrespect me in my own house.””
Malik's voice shook.
“This isn't your house. Dad pays for everything.””
“Malik!”” I warned gently.
Not because I disagreed with him, but because I didn't want the situation to become another reason for Vanessa to intimidate him.
I stood and moved between them.
“Vanessa, I want you to explain what you meant.””
She folded her arms.
“You've been working constantly. Someone has to manage this family. Someone has to make decisions.””
“Agreed. But why is Nia going hungry?””
“She isn't going hungry.””
Nia looked down.
I turned toward her.
“Sweetheart, you can tell me anything.””
She hesitated.
Then she reached into the pocket of her pink sweatshirt and pulled out a small folded piece of paper.
“I kept this.””
I unfolded it.
It was a list written in a child's handwriting.
Monday: half sandwich.
Tuesday: cereal.
Wednesday: no dinner.
Thursday: crackers.
Friday: leftovers.
At the bottom, she'd written something that made my throat tighten.
Daddy comes home tomorrow. Maybe I can eat with him.
I stared at those words.
Vanessa reached across the table.
“Give me that.””
I moved the paper away.
“Don't touch her.””
“It's a stupid little list!””
Nia flinched.
I crouched beside her.
“Did you write this?””
She nodded.
“Why?””
“Because I wanted to remember which days I was allowed to eat.””
The room seemed to tilt.
I looked at Vanessa.
“You told me the children were eating normally.””
“They were!””
“Then explain this.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“She exaggerates. You know how emotional she is.””
Malik laughed bitterly.
“She's not exaggerating.””
He walked toward the kitchen and returned holding a small plastic container.
He placed it on the table.
Inside were two slices of bread and a piece of cheese.
“This was Nia's dinner last Tuesday,” he said.
Vanessa's face turned red.
“You went through the refrigerator?””
“I made it for her.””
“You had no permission!””
Malik's eyes filled.
“She was crying because she was hungry!””
I felt something inside me break.
I had spent years believing that providing a comfortable home was the same thing as protecting my family.
I had paid the mortgage, the utilities, the school fees, and every household expense.
I had trusted Vanessa with the day-to-day care of the children.
And while I was traveling for work, my daughter had been learning how to survive in her own kitchen.
My phone vibrated.
A message appeared from my attorney, Rebecca Collins.
Daniel, I have reviewed the additional financial records. We need to discuss the transfers immediately. The account activity is more serious than we initially thought.
I turned the screen toward Vanessa.
“Do you recognize this account?””
She glanced at it.
For the first time, she looked genuinely frightened.
“Where did you get that?””
“From the bank records.””
“You had no right to investigate my personal accounts.””
“The account is connected to a household card funded from my business.””
She said nothing.
I opened the banking application and showed her the transactions.
Over the previous fourteen months, thousands of dollars had been transferred into an account I didn't recognize.
Some transfers were labeled household expenses.
Others were marked as school supplies, groceries, and medical expenses.
But the amounts didn't match the bills.
“Where did the money go?”” I asked.
Vanessa grabbed her phone.
“I don't have to explain every transaction to you.””
“It's money from the family account.””
“I'm your wife!””
“And those are my children!””
She slammed her phone onto the table.
“You think you're some perfect father? You're never here! You leave me alone to deal with everything!””
I didn't interrupt.
For a moment, her anger seemed almost convincing.
Then Malik spoke.
“You don't deal with everything.””
Vanessa slowly turned toward him.
“What did you say?””
“You spend most afternoons shopping. When Dad calls, you tell him we're doing homework. But Nia and I are usually alone.””
“That is not true.””
“I have pictures.””
He pulled out his phone.
My son opened a folder and showed me photographs.
There was Nia sitting on the kitchen floor beside an empty refrigerator.
Another showed a grocery bag containing several expired items.
A third showed Vanessa at a restaurant, surrounded by shopping bags, while Nia sat alone at home.
I stared at the dates.
They were taken during the exact weeks Vanessa had told me she was preparing healthy meals for the children.
“Why didn't you tell me?”” I asked Malik.
His eyes dropped.
“Because she said she'd send me away to boarding school if I kept interfering.””
Vanessa shook her head.
“I never said that.””
Malik opened another recording.
Her voice came through the phone.
“If you keep making trouble, I'll make sure your father sends you somewhere else. You think he'll choose you over his marriage?””
My hands curled into fists.
But I forced myself to remain calm.
Vanessa looked at me.
“Daniel, you're really going to believe a teenager's recordings over your wife?””
I looked at the empty plate in front of Nia.
“I believe my daughter.””
A knock sounded at the front door.
Vanessa froze.
I checked the clock.
It was 7:42 p.m.
Nobody was expected.
I walked toward the entrance and opened it.
Rebecca Collins stood on the porch, holding a leather folder.
Behind her was a woman carrying an official identification badge.
Vanessa appeared in the hallway.
Her eyes widened.
“Why is she here?””
Rebecca looked at me.
“Daniel, we need to talk about the money.””
Then she glanced toward Vanessa.
“And I think you should know that we found another account. One registered under your wife's maiden name.””
Vanessa went completely still.
May you like
Because that account had been opened long before our marriage.
And its latest deposit had come from someone inside my family.
