Chapter 4: The Man Standing at My Door

Three knocks.

That's all it took for every person in the kitchen to go silent.

I looked toward the front entrance.

My younger brother, Ethan, stood outside.

The same brother who had helped me build my company. The same man who had carried my daughter around the hospital when she was born. The same man whose name had just appeared on my wife's secret bank records.

I opened the door.

Ethan stepped inside without waiting for an invitation.

“Daniel. We need to talk.””

I didn't move.

“Funny. That's exactly what I've been trying to do with my wife.””

His eyes shifted toward Vanessa.

For half a second, they exchanged a look.

It was brief.

But it wasn't the look of two people who had just discovered an unexpected financial connection.

It was the look of two people who had been caught.

Ethan cleared his throat.

“Can we talk privately?””

“No.””

“Daniel, this is between adults.””

I pointed toward the living room.

“My children are the reason we're having this conversation.””

Ethan sighed.

“Look, I know things look bad. But you're misunderstanding the situation.””

I held up the notebook Malik had found.

“Then explain this.””

Ethan glanced at the page.

His expression changed.

“Where did you get that?””

“From my wife's bedroom.””

He looked at Vanessa.

She shook her head slightly.

That small movement told me they were communicating without words.

Rebecca stepped forward.

“Mr. Carter, I'm Rebecca Collins, Daniel's attorney. Before you say anything further, I recommend that you understand the financial records and documents we've uncovered.””

Ethan gave her an irritated look.

“I'm not discussing private family matters with you.””

“Then you shouldn't have transferred money into an account connected to those matters.””

His jaw tightened.

I walked toward the dining table and placed the banking records in front of him.

“Eighty-six thousand four hundred dollars. That's how much disappeared from the household account.””

Ethan glanced at the figures.

“Some of that was repayment.””

“For what?””

He didn't answer.

“For what, Ethan?””

He rubbed his forehead.

“Your business was in trouble last year. You were in the hospital. Someone had to make sure the family was protected.””

I stared at him.

“My business wasn't in trouble.””

“You were unconscious.””

“For four days.””

“Four days can change everything.””

I stepped closer.

“Did you transfer money to Vanessa?””

He looked away.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“Because she needed help.””

“With what?””

Ethan hesitated.

Then Vanessa spoke.

“Daniel, stop interrogating him. He's been there for me when you weren't.””

I turned toward her.

“Was he there when Nia went to bed hungry?””

She said nothing.

“Was he there when Malik had to hide bread in his bedroom because he was afraid his sister wouldn't have dinner?””

Ethan looked confused.

“What are you talking about?””

Malik stepped out of the living room.

“You know exactly what he's talking about.””

Ethan frowned.

“Malik, this isn't your business.””

“You sent her money, didn't you?””

“Watch your tone.””

Malik held up his phone.

“Then watch this.””

He played a recording.

Vanessa's voice filled the kitchen.

“Your father has enough money to buy you anything. But that doesn't mean you get to take everything you want. Some people need to learn that they aren't the center of the world.””

Then Ethan's voice followed.

“Keep her away from the paperwork. She's too young to understand what's happening.””

My brother's face drained of color.

“Where did you get that?””

Malik stopped the recording.

“I recorded it when you came over last month.””

Ethan turned toward me.

“Daniel, this is being blown out of proportion.””

I pointed at him.

“Why were you discussing paperwork with my wife?””

He looked at Vanessa.

She began crying.

“Tell him,” Ethan said.

I froze.

“Tell me what?””

Vanessa wiped her cheeks.

“Ethan was helping me prepare for the possibility that you wouldn't recover.””

“Prepare how?””

Ethan interrupted.

“We were protecting your assets.””

“Without my permission?””

“You were incapacitated!””

“I was alive!””

My voice echoed through the house.

Nia appeared at the living room doorway.

I immediately lowered my voice.

Ethan noticed her.

“Daniel, you need to calm down. You're scaring the children.””

I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing.

He had walked into my home, stood beside my wife, and tried to explain away months of deception.

Now he wanted to lecture me about frightening children.

Rebecca opened her folder.

“Mr. Carter, we have reason to believe that documents may have been prepared using Daniel's identity without authorization. You should not destroy or alter any related records.””

Ethan's face hardened.

“You have no idea what you're dealing with.””

Rebecca didn't blink.

“Then perhaps you should explain.””

He looked at me.

“Daniel, you need to understand something. Vanessa didn't start this.””

“Who did?””

Ethan looked toward Nia.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“Your mother did.””

I stared at him.

“My mother has been dead for six years.””

“Exactly.””

He reached inside his coat and removed a folded photograph.

It showed my mother sitting at a restaurant table.

Beside her was a younger Vanessa.

And standing behind them was a man I had never seen before.

Ethan placed the photograph on the counter.

“Your mother knew about Vanessa before you married her.””

My stomach tightened.

“What are you talking about?””

Ethan leaned closer.

“She knew Vanessa had been contacting our family for months. She knew about the money. And she knew there was something unusual about Nia's birth records.””

I turned toward my daughter.

Nia was standing beside Malik, clutching the white-and-blue envelope.

Her eyes were fixed on me.

I looked back at Ethan.

“What does my daughter's birth have to do with any of this?””

He swallowed.

“Daniel, there's a reason your mother established that trust for Nia.””

May you like

Then he looked directly at Vanessa.

“And there's a reason Vanessa was so desperate to keep that child from getting close to the family money.””
