Chapter 5: The Secret My Mother Took to Her Grave

I picked up the photograph.

My mother looked happy.

She was wearing the blue cardigan she used to wear every Sunday. Her silver hair was tied behind her head, and she had one hand resting on Vanessa's shoulder.

I recognized the restaurant.

It was a small Italian place near the hospital where my mother received treatment.

The date printed on the back was almost eleven years old.

Three months before Nia was born.

“Where did you get this?”” I asked.

Ethan sat down.

“Your mother gave it to me.””

“When?””

“About two months before she died.””

I stared at him.

“You've had this for six years?””

He nodded.

“And you never thought to tell me?””

“I was trying to keep the family together.””

I laughed without humor.

“You've been helping my wife hide money, and now you're telling me you were protecting the family?””

Ethan leaned forward.

“Daniel, listen. Your mother was worried about something. She asked me to investigate Vanessa.””

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“That's a lie.””

Ethan continued.

“She discovered that Vanessa had been involved in a legal dispute before you met her. There were questions about a previous marriage, a financial settlement, and a child.””

I felt the room grow colder.

“A child?””

Rebecca pulled a chair closer.

“Ethan, be specific.””

He rubbed his hands together.

“Vanessa had a daughter before she met Daniel.””

Vanessa stood so quickly that her chair fell backward.

“Stop!””

Nobody moved.

Ethan looked at her.

“You can't keep hiding it.””

I turned toward my wife.

“Is that true?””

She stared at the floor.

“Daniel, I was young.””

“Do you have another child?””

She began crying.

“Yes.””

The word came out so quietly I almost didn't hear it.

Malik looked stunned.

Nia moved closer to him.

I sat down slowly.

“What happened to her?””

Vanessa covered her mouth.

“Her name is Sophie.””

“Where is she?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“I haven't seen her in years.””

Rebecca interrupted gently.

“Mrs. Carter, is this the same child mentioned in the financial documents?””

Vanessa looked at her.

“I don't know what you're talking about.””

Rebecca opened a separate folder.

“An account was established for a minor beneficiary under the name Sophie Bennett. The deposits began shortly after Daniel's mother passed away.””

I looked at Ethan.

He nodded.

“Your mother created it.””

“Why?””

“Because she discovered that Sophie was Vanessa's daughter. She wanted to make sure the girl wasn't abandoned.””

I stared at the papers.

My mother had never mentioned this.

Not once.

She had been generous, but she had also been private about her finances.

“Why would my mother give money to Vanessa's daughter?””

Ethan looked uncomfortable.

“Because she believed the child deserved better.””

Vanessa wiped her eyes.

“Your mother hated me.””

“No,” Ethan said.

“She didn't.””

He looked at me.

“She was worried about you. She thought Vanessa was marrying you for financial security, but she didn't have proof until she found the old court records.””

I felt sick.

My mother had been trying to protect me while I believed she was simply being difficult about my marriage.

I remembered our last argument.

She had asked me to slow down the wedding preparations.

She had said, Daniel, love doesn't mean you stop asking questions.

I had accused her of being suspicious and controlling.

We never fully repaired that conversation.

Now I was looking at the consequences.

Vanessa grabbed the photograph.

“Your mother had no right to interfere in my life.””

I took it back.

“She was trying to protect a child.””

“She was trying to ruin our marriage!””

“Why?””

Vanessa didn't answer.

Ethan finally spoke.

“Because Sophie had been living with relatives. Vanessa wanted money to bring her back.””

I turned toward my wife.

“Is that why you were taking money from the household account?””

She nodded.

“I wanted to help my daughter.””

“Then why didn't you tell me?””

“Because you would have said no.””

“Would I?””

Vanessa's silence was answer enough.

I took a breath.

“You could have told me. We could have discussed it. We could have helped her properly.””

She looked at me with desperate eyes.

“You already had two children. You barely had time for them. I knew you wouldn't want another responsibility.””

I glanced toward Malik and Nia.

“Apparently, you thought it was easier to take money and starve the children who already lived here.””

Vanessa began sobbing.

“I didn't starve them!””

Nia stepped forward.

“Then why did you tell me Sophie deserved better food than I did?””

Everyone turned.

Vanessa froze.

I looked at my daughter.

“What did she say, sweetheart?””

Nia held her hands together.

“She said Sophie had been through a lot and needed nice things. She said I was spoiled because Daddy bought me clothes and toys.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Nia, I never said that.””

“Yes, you did.””

Nia's voice was small, but she didn't look away.

“You said I already had a family. Sophie didn't.””

My chest tightened.

Malik put his arm around his sister.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Did you tell our daughter that?””

Vanessa sank into the chair.

“I was trying to make her understand.””

“Understand what?””

“That Sophie needed help.””

I pointed toward Nia.

“And she didn't?””

Vanessa had no answer.

Rebecca turned another page.

“Daniel, there's something else about Sophie.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“The beneficiary account wasn't the only account established by your mother. She also arranged for a private trust to provide housing and educational support for the child.””

I frowned.

“Where is Sophie living now?””

Rebecca glanced at the document.

“According to the latest records, she's living with a woman named Margaret Ellis in Ohio.””

Vanessa suddenly looked up.

“Margaret?””

“You know her?”” I asked.

Vanessa's face changed.

“She wasn't supposed to contact anyone.””

Rebecca studied her.

“Why not?””

Vanessa looked toward Ethan.

He closed his eyes.

Then he said something that made my blood run cold.

“Because Margaret isn't just a relative.””

I waited.

Ethan swallowed.

“She's Sophie's legal adoptive mother.””

Vanessa stood.

“She stole my daughter!””

Rebecca remained calm.

“No. The adoption was finalized through the court. And according to the records, Vanessa voluntarily signed the consent documents.””

I looked at my wife.

“Is that true?””

She couldn't speak.

Then my phone rang.

The caller ID showed an unfamiliar Ohio number.

I answered.

A woman's voice came through.

“Mr. Carter? My name is Margaret Ellis. I'm calling because I've just received a notification that Vanessa has been asking questions about Sophie's trust.””

I looked at Vanessa.

Margaret continued.

“There's something you need to know before you make any decisions about your wife.””

“What is it?””

May you like

Her voice dropped.

“Sophie has been trying to contact your daughter Nia.””
