Chapter 8 - THE NIGHT THE TRUTH FINALLY SPOKE

Three weeks after the fall, Camila was discharged from the hospital.
Gabriel remained under medical supervision, but his condition had improved enough for the doctors to discuss his eventual return home.
Camila visited him every morning.
She learned how to hold his fragile body, how to recognize his cries, and how to sit quietly beside his incubator when fear overwhelmed her.
Alejandro arranged for a nurse to assist her during recovery, but he never made decisions without asking.
One afternoon, Camila returned to the mansion for the first time.
The staircase had been sealed off for the investigation.
The house smelled of cleaning products and fresh paint.
She stood in the foyer, staring at the steps.
"I don't remember everything," she told Elena.
"That's understandable. Don't force yourself."
Camila closed her eyes.
She remembered walking downstairs for water.
She remembered hearing a door close.
She remembered someone saying, "You shouldn't be here."
Then she remembered gripping the railing.
"It was a man's voice," she whispered.
Elena made a note.
"Did you recognize it?"
Camila opened her eyes.
"I thought it was Mateo."
"Why?"
"Because he had been arguing with me earlier that evening."
About the trust documents.
About a signature she refused to provide.
About whether her family had any right to interfere with his business.
Mateo had called her ungrateful.
He had accused her father of treating him like a servant.
Then he had said something she couldn't forget.
"You have no idea how much your family owes me."
At the time, she had thought he meant emotional gratitude.
Now she wondered whether he meant money.
The police arrived later that afternoon with a new development.
A neighbor's exterior camera had captured a vehicle entering the street shortly before Camila's fall.
The vehicle belonged to Mateo's company.
Investigators also recovered a message from Bruno's phone instructing him to retrieve a document from the mansion that night.
The document was believed to be an original trust authorization.
But the message contained an additional line.
"Do not let her see the second page."
Camila looked at Elena.
"What second page?"
The attorney checked the documents already collected.
"There was an attachment missing from the electronic copy."
The police searched the mansion again.
They found the original paperwork inside a locked drawer in Mateo's private study.
The second page contained an authorization for the sale of a property owned by Camila's late father.
The sale would have transferred a substantial portion of her inheritance into a company connected to Mateo.
At the bottom was Camila's signature.
It was forged.
The police contacted Mateo's attorneys.
He agreed to an interview.
During questioning, he claimed he had no knowledge of the forged signature.
He insisted Bruno had handled the paperwork.
Then investigators played the recording of his conversation with Valeria.
Mateo listened without speaking.
When it ended, he leaned back.
"That recording proves nothing about the fall."
"That's correct," the investigator replied. "We're investigating the financial documents and the circumstances of the incident separately."
Mateo's lawyer advised him not to answer further questions.
But the investigation was expanding.
Forensic experts were examining the railing.
Financial investigators were tracing the transfers.
And Bruno had begun cooperating in exchange for consideration of his assistance.
He admitted entering the mansion that night to retrieve the original documents.
He also admitted arguing with Camila near the staircase.
But he insisted she had already fallen before he reached her.
"Then why did you write that we were all finished if she remembered what happened?" an investigator asked.
Bruno looked exhausted.
"Because I knew what Mateo had done."
The investigator waited.
Bruno swallowed.
"Not the fall. The money. The documents. He had been using his wife's identity to move assets. I knew she had started asking questions."
"Did Mateo instruct you to hurt her?"
"No."
"Did he instruct you to frighten her?"
Bruno hesitated.
"He told me to make sure she stopped interfering with the paperwork."
"How?"
Bruno looked down.
"He didn't say."
The admission was serious, but it still didn't establish that anyone had deliberately caused Camila's fall.
When Alejandro told Camila, she felt both relief and anger.
"At least he didn't push me," she whispered.
"We still don't know exactly what happened."
She nodded.
Then she remembered another detail.
The night of the fall, Mateo had been wearing a dark jacket.
A jacket with a torn cuff.
The same kind of black fabric investigators had found caught beneath the railing.
Camila looked at Alejandro.
"What if Mateo was there?"
Alejandro didn't answer immediately.
"Then the evidence needs to establish that."
She took a deep breath.
"I want the truth, even if it destroys whatever remains of my marriage."
Alejandro nodded.
"Then we'll keep looking."
Outside the mansion, reporters waited for Mateo's next statement.

Inside, Camila stood beside the staircase and made a promise to herself.
She would no longer confuse protecting her family with protecting the man who had betrayed it.
