Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO DISAPPEAR

The first headline appeared the following morning.

"MONTERREY BUSINESSMAN UNDER SCRUTINY AFTER PREGNANT WIFE'S HOSPITALIZATION."

By lunchtime, reporters had gathered outside Mateo's office.

By evening, the story had spread across social media.

People shared the photograph of Camila's staircase. Commentators debated the seventeen unanswered calls. Others questioned why Alejandro Reyes had been the person who rescued her.

Mateo's public relations team issued a statement describing the incident as a tragic accident.

It didn't help.

Someone leaked a second image showing Mateo entering the club with Valeria hours before Camila's fall.

The internet did what the internet always did.

It turned a private disaster into a public spectacle.

But Camila refused to become a helpless woman in someone else's story.

She hired Elena as her personal attorney, requested an independent audit of the family trust, and formally instructed the trustees not to approve any amendments without her direct confirmation.

She also requested a forensic examination of the mansion's security system.

Mateo responded with a legal letter accusing her of acting under Alejandro's influence.

When Elena read it aloud, Camila laughed bitterly.

"He thinks every decision I make must belong to a man."

"That argument is unlikely to help him," Elena replied.

"I don't care whether it helps him. I want it documented."

The next day, Camila held her first press conference.

She wasn't physically strong enough to stand for long, so she sat in a wheelchair beside Elena.

Cameras flashed.

Reporters shouted questions.

"Mrs. Camila, are you accusing your husband of abandoning you?"

"Do you believe Alejandro Reyes is involved?"

"Was the fall an accident?"

Camila waited until the room quieted.

"I'm not here to accuse anyone of a crime," she began. "The authorities are investigating, and I will respect that process."

She paused.

"But I want to correct one thing. I did not call my husband seventeen times because I was being dramatic. I called him because I was injured, frightened, and carrying our child."

The room became silent.

"I called because I believed my husband would help me. When he didn't answer, I called someone I had not spoken to in years. That person came."

She looked directly at the cameras.

"I am grateful that my son and I survived. I am also entitled to protect my child, my inheritance, and my future. Those are not acts of revenge. They are acts of responsibility."

A reporter raised his hand.

"Do you still love Mateo?"

Camila looked down for a moment.

"I loved the man I believed he was. I don't know who he is anymore."

The conference ended.

Outside, Alejandro waited beside her car.

"You were brave."

"No," Camila said. "I was tired of being afraid."

That evening, Mateo called.

She almost ignored it.

Then she answered.

"What do you want?"

His voice sounded strained.

"You've destroyed my reputation."

"I told the truth."

"You made me look like a monster."

"I didn't mention Valeria. I didn't mention the money. I didn't accuse you of causing my fall."

"You let Alejandro stand beside you."

"He helped save our child."

Mateo's breathing grew heavier.

"You don't understand what he's doing. He's trying to take my company."

"Then perhaps you should ask why your company is vulnerable."

"You think you're clever now?"

Camila closed her eyes.

"No. I think I'm finally listening."

He lowered his voice.

"I want to see Gabriel."

"Your son is in medical care. When the doctors approve visitors, we can discuss an appropriate arrangement."

"I'm his father."

"Then start acting like one."

She ended the call.

Her hands trembled afterward, but she didn't regret it.

Two hours later, Elena called with an update.

"The trustees have approved a temporary protective order over the disputed assets. Mateo cannot transfer them while the investigation continues."

Camila leaned back against her pillows.

"Good."

"There is something else. Valeria has provided a recording."

"What kind of recording?"

"A conversation between her and Mateo, made shortly before your fall."

Elena hesitated.

"She says it contains a discussion about the trust documents and Bruno's instructions."

Camila felt the room grow cold.

"Can I hear it?"

"Not until the investigators finish reviewing it. But Elena's colleague believes it could be significant."

That night, Camila looked at the photograph of Gabriel beside her bed.

She had spent months preparing to become a mother.

She had bought tiny clothes, chosen nursery colors, and imagined Mateo holding their son for the first time.

Instead, she was learning how to protect her child from the man who had promised to protect them both.

She touched Gabriel's photograph.

"You will know the truth," she whispered. "All of it."

Outside the hospital, a black vehicle sat across the street.

Someone inside took a photograph of Camila's window.

Then the vehicle pulled away.

The next morning, a note arrived at her room.

It contained no signature.

Only seven words.

"STOP INVESTIGATING, OR YOUR SON WILL SUFFER."
