Chapter 10 - THE SEVENTEENTH CALL

The meeting took place in a small conference room at Elena's law office.

Camila arrived with Alejandro, her attorney, and a private security officer.

Mateo entered five minutes later.

He looked older than he had a month earlier.

His expensive suit was wrinkled, his face unshaven, and his eyes red from lack of sleep.

For a moment, he and Camila stared at each other.

Neither spoke.

The woman waiting at the table introduced herself as Sofia Morales, a former employee of Mateo's security company.

She placed a sealed envelope between them.

"I worked in the control room on the night of the incident," she explained. "I wasn't authorized to discuss the security footage, but I made a copy before the original files were deleted."

Mateo's face tightened.

"You stole company property."

Sofia didn't flinch.

"I preserved evidence."

She opened the envelope.

Inside were photographs, a printed timeline, and a storage device.

The first image showed Mateo entering the mansion at 10:36 p.m.

The second showed him walking toward the staircase.

The third showed Bruno entering the study.

Then came the final photograph.

It showed Mateo standing at the top of the stairs, holding the railing while Camila stood several steps below him.

The image was clear enough to identify both faces.

Camila gripped the edge of the table.

"You told me you were at the club."

Mateo said nothing.

Sofia continued.

"The cameras recorded Mr. Mateo entering the house shortly before the fall. He left again at 10:49 p.m. The footage was later deleted from the main system."

Elena leaned forward.

"Do you have the original recordings?"

"Not all of them. But I have the backup files and the system logs showing when the deletions occurred."

Mateo's attorney immediately requested a copy for examination.

Sofia agreed through the appropriate legal process.

Camila looked at her husband.

"Why were you there?"

Mateo rubbed his face.

"I came home to get some documents."

"Which documents?"

"The trust paperwork."

"You knew I hadn't signed it."

He didn't answer.

"You knew someone had forged my signature."

Mateo finally looked at her.

"I didn't forge it."

"Then who did?"

His silence stretched.

Camila felt her heart pounding.

"Mateo, I nearly died. Our son was born months before he was supposed to be. I spent days wondering whether I would ever hold him. I deserve the truth."

Mateo's shoulders sagged.

"Bruno told me you had found the documents. I went home to convince you not to interfere."

"And then?"

"We argued."

"What happened on the stairs?"

He closed his eyes.

"I told you the company would collapse if the transfer didn't go through. You said you would call your father and the trustees. You said you wouldn't let me use your inheritance."

Camila remembered the argument.

She remembered Mateo's angry face.

She remembered his hand moving toward the railing.

"Did you touch me?"

Mateo looked up sharply.

"No."

"Did you touch the railing?"

He hesitated.

"I grabbed it when you stumbled."

Camila's breath caught.

"You saw me fall?"

Mateo's eyes filled with tears.

"I tried to catch you."

"Then why didn't you call an ambulance?"

He stared at the table.

"Because I panicked."

"Why didn't you tell the police you were there?"

He didn't answer.

Camila's voice broke.

"Why did you leave me?"

Mateo covered his face.

For the first time since the investigation began, he looked less like a powerful businessman and more like a frightened man who had run out of lies.

"I thought you were still conscious. I thought you would get up. I was afraid the argument would be discovered, and I knew the documents would expose everything."

Camila shook her head slowly.

"You left because you were afraid of losing money."

"I was afraid of losing everything."

"You lost everything when you decided that your reputation mattered more than my life."

Mateo began crying.

He apologized.

He said he had been selfish, stupid, and afraid.

He said he had never wanted her to fall.

But Camila no longer confused regret with redemption.

"I believe you may not have intended for me to fall," she said. "That doesn't excuse what you did afterward."

Mateo looked at her desperately.

"Can you ever forgive me?"

Camila took a long breath.

"Forgiveness is not the same as allowing you back into my life."

He lowered his head.

The investigators would determine the legal consequences of his actions. The financial courts would decide what could be recovered. The family court would address parental arrangements.

Nothing about the meeting could settle those questions.

But one thing had become undeniable.

Mateo had been at the mansion.

He had argued with Camila over the trust.

He had left without summoning help.

And afterward, he had allowed everyone to believe he had been elsewhere.

As the meeting ended, Camila stood.

Alejandro offered his arm, but she declined it gently.

She wanted to walk out under her own strength.

At the doorway, Mateo called her name.

"Camila."

She turned.

"Will you tell Gabriel that I loved him?"

She looked at him for a long moment.

"One day, I'll tell Gabriel the truth about his father. I'll tell him what you did, and I'll tell him what you could have done differently. When he's old enough, he'll decide what that means to him."

Then she left.

Months later, Gabriel finally came home.

Camila carried him through the front door of a smaller house she had purchased with her own protected funds. The nursery was simple, with pale blue walls, soft blankets, and sunlight spilling across the floor.

There were no marble staircases.

No locked gates.

No rooms filled with expensive furniture meant to impress strangers.

There was only peace.

Alejandro visited occasionally, bringing groceries, medical supplies, and books for the baby. He never asked Camila to repay him. He never demanded a place in her life.

Their friendship grew slowly, without promises or pressure.

Mateo, meanwhile, faced civil proceedings over the disputed transfers and scrutiny over his conduct on the night of the fall. His company was restructured under independent supervision, and the courts addressed the financial claims according to the evidence.

His life did not collapse because Alejandro stole it.

It collapsed because the truth exposed the decisions Mateo had made when he believed nobody would ever hold him accountable.

One evening, Camila sat beside Gabriel's crib and watched him sleep.

Her phone rested on the table.

For a moment, she remembered the night she had lain at the bottom of the staircase, calling the man she loved until her fingers could barely move.

Seventeen calls.

Seventeen unanswered pleas.

She remembered believing that if she could just reach Mateo, everything would be all right.

She had been wrong.

But she had also discovered something she would never forget.

Sometimes, the person you trust most is the person who abandons you.

Sometimes, the person you have been told to fear is the one who saves your life.

And sometimes, losing the future you imagined is the only way to build a future worth living.

Camila kissed Gabriel's forehead.

"You'll never have to beg someone to care about you," she whispered.

Outside, the evening breeze moved through the trees.

Her phone remained silent.

May you like

For the first time in years, that silence didn't frighten her.

It meant she was free.
