Chapter 7 - THE PRICE OF BETRAYAL

Alejandro read the threat twice before placing it on Elena's desk.
"Someone is trying to frighten her into silence."
Elena nodded.
"The police have been notified. We'll also arrange additional security."
Camila sat beside the window, holding Gabriel's tiny photograph.
"Could Mateo have sent it?"
"Possibly," Alejandro replied. "But we won't assume anything without evidence."
She looked at him.
"That's what I appreciate about you."
He raised an eyebrow.
"What?"
"You don't tell me what I want to hear. You tell me what you know."
Alejandro looked away.
Five years earlier, he and Mateo had built a business together. They had been inseparable until Alejandro discovered that Mateo had secretly diverted money from a project they both owned.
When Alejandro confronted him, Mateo blamed a junior employee and forged documents to support the accusation.
Alejandro lost several major clients before proving his innocence.
The friendship ended.
Camila had been the only person who privately apologized for what Mateo had done.
She hadn't defended him.
She hadn't made excuses.
She had simply told Alejandro that he deserved better.
Now, years later, Alejandro found himself protecting her.
He had once believed the past was behind him.
But Mateo had never stopped keeping score.
That afternoon, Valeria met with investigators and provided the recording.
Her voice could be heard clearly.
"Why does Camila need to sign this now?" she asked.
Mateo answered, "Because once the amendment is approved, the trustees won't be able to block the restructuring."
"And if she refuses?"
"She won't refuse. She trusts me."
Valeria laughed nervously.
"You sound very sure."
"I know my wife."
The recording continued.
Then Bruno's voice appeared.
"What happens if she discovers the documents before everything is finalized?"
Mateo replied, "Keep her away from the paperwork until the transfer is complete."
There was a pause.
Bruno asked, "And if she remembers what she saw?"
The recording ended.
The investigators listened to it repeatedly.
It was troubling, but incomplete. It didn't establish what happened on the staircase, and its context still needed to be verified.
Nevertheless, the conversation raised serious questions.
Mateo denied the recording was authentic.
His attorneys claimed it had been edited to damage his reputation.
But a forensic examination found no evidence of splicing in the portions submitted for analysis.
Meanwhile, Valeria was discovering the cost of cooperating.
Her accounts were frozen as investigators traced payments through the company registered in her name.
Her friends stopped answering her calls.
Her luxury apartment became the subject of news reports.
For the first time, she understood what it meant to be publicly associated with Mateo's choices.
She contacted Camila through Elena.
"I want to apologize," Valeria said during their meeting.
Camila studied her.
"For what?"
"For being part of your husband's life behind your back. For laughing when he ignored your calls. For believing that if I benefited from what he did, it didn't matter how he treated you."
Camila remained silent.
Valeria wiped her eyes.
"I know you don't owe me forgiveness."
"No," Camila replied. "I don't."
Valeria nodded, accepting the answer.
"But I can still tell the truth," she said.
"Yes. You can."
Camila stood slowly.
"I hope you do."
The meeting ended without an embrace or a promise of friendship.
Camila wasn't interested in pretending that betrayal could be erased by an apology.
She was interested in facts.
Two days later, the police found Bruno at a hotel near the airport.
He had been preparing to leave the country using a passport issued under a different name.
During questioning, he initially denied entering the mansion that night.
Then investigators showed him the security footage.
His expression changed.
They showed him the financial transfers.
He asked for a lawyer.
Finally, they presented the photograph of Mateo near the staircase.
Bruno stared at it for a long time.
"Who took that?" he asked.
The investigators didn't answer.
Bruno lowered his head.
"I didn't push her."
Nobody had accused him of pushing anyone.
The room went silent.
He immediately asked to stop the interview.
That single statement changed the direction of the investigation.
When Elena informed Camila, she felt no triumph.
Only dread.
"If he didn't push me," she whispered, "then what happened?"
"We don't know yet."
Camila remembered the sound of footsteps behind her.
The sensation of the railing moving beneath her hand.
And a voice, somewhere above her, saying her name.
She had assumed it was Mateo calling from another room.
Now she wasn't certain.
That evening, she asked the police to arrange another interview when she was medically strong enough.
She wanted to remember.
Because the truth was no longer just about money.
It was about the night someone had stood behind her while she fell.
May you like
And whether that person had tried to save her.
Or watched her disappear.
