Chapter 9: The Letter My Son Never Wanted Me to Read

I couldn’t touch the envelope.

Not immediately.

Because seeing David’s handwriting brought back a thousand memories.

School permission slips.

Birthday cards.

Notes he left on the refrigerator when he was young.

Mom, I’ll be home late.

Love you.

Don’t worry.

Those words used to mean safety.

Now they felt like a warning.

“David,” I whispered.

He looked terrified.

“I didn’t know that was there.””

“Then why is your handwriting on it?””

His face went pale.

“I don’t know.””

Sarah looked at him.

“You do.””

David turned toward her.

“What did you do?””

She didn’t answer.

Thomas carefully placed the envelope in front of me.

“Michael’s instructions were clear. This should be opened by you.””

I looked at David.

“Do you want me to read this?””

His eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know.””

That was the most honest thing he had said.

I opened it.

Inside was a single page.

At the top was a date.

Eight years ago.

Three days before Michael passed away.

I began reading.

Mom,

I stopped.

My hands went cold.

It wasn’t written to me.

It was written from David.

If you’re reading this, Dad has already made his decision.

I looked up.

David covered his mouth.

“What?””

I continued.

I know what I did was wrong.

My heart sank.

I know I hurt both of you.

The room disappeared around me.

David’s voice was barely audible.

“I wrote that.””

I looked at him.

“When?””

He couldn’t answer.

I kept reading.

Dad found out about the money. He gave me a choice. Tell Mom everything, or fix it myself.

A tear fell onto the paper.

I was afraid.

I closed my eyes.

My son had been afraid.

But he had let that fear destroy everything.

The letter continued.

Sarah told me she could help.

I looked up.

Sarah became very still.

She said she knew someone who could make the problem disappear.

David whispered:

“Mom…”

I continued.

I didn’t know what she was planning.

Sarah suddenly spoke.

“Don’t.””

Everyone turned.

Her voice was different.

Not confident.

Not angry.

Afraid.

Thomas looked at her.

“Let her finish.””

I kept reading.

After I realized what Sarah had done, I wanted to tell Dad.

My heart raced.

But she threatened me.

David lowered his head.

“She threatened me.””

“With what?””

He looked at Sarah.

“She said if I told anyone, she would send everything to the police.””

Sarah shook her head.

“That’s not what happened.””

David laughed bitterly.

“Really?””

I looked between them.

“What did she do?””

David stood.

“She didn’t just know about the money.””

His voice broke.

“She created the situation.””

Silence.

Sarah’s face changed.

“No.””

David looked at her.

“You introduced me to Mark.””

Sarah stepped back.

“You wanted the investment.””

“You told me it was safe.””

“It was supposed to be.””

“No.””

His voice became stronger.

“You knew.””

I looked at Sarah.

“What did you know?””

She stared at me.

Then at David.

Then she whispered:

“I knew Mark had done it before.””

The room froze.

Thomas leaned forward.

“Done what?””

Sarah didn’t answer.

David did.

“He wasn’t an investor.””

My stomach dropped.

“Then what was he?””

David looked at me.

“He was a scammer.””

Nobody spoke.

The woman who had demanded my bedroom.

The woman who had acted like she belonged in my home.

The woman who claimed she was protecting my son.

Had brought him into danger.

Sarah suddenly grabbed her purse.

“I’m leaving.””

Thomas stood.

“No, you’re not.””

She glared.

“You can’t keep me here.””

“No.””

Thomas calmly pointed toward the table.

“But you might want to stay.””

He slid one final document forward.

Sarah looked at it.

Her face changed.

“What is this?””

Thomas answered:

“The reason Michael waited eight years to reveal the truth.””

Sarah picked up the paper.

Her hands began shaking.

“What…”

She looked at me.

Then whispered:

“Your husband knew everything.””

A pause.

“He knew I was going to come back for this house.””

My blood ran cold.

Thomas looked at me.

“And Michael left one final instruction.””

I stared at him.

“What instruction?””

He opened the folder.

“If Sarah ever tried to take control of your home…”

May you like

He paused.

“…she would lose control of something far more important.””
