Chapter 18: The Last Person I Suspected
I couldn’t move.
I knew that voice.
I knew the rhythm.
The confidence.
The calmness.
But my mind refused to accept it.
Slowly, the person stepped into the room.
And everything inside me went silent.
“Carol.””
Her name left my mouth like a question.
She smiled sadly.
“Hello, Linda.””
David stepped backward.
“You…”
Carol looked at him.
“I’m sorry.””
He laughed.
A broken sound.
“You’re sorry?””
She lowered her eyes.
“Yes.””
I stared at her.
The woman who brought flowers when Michael was sick.
The woman who helped organize our finances.
The woman who knew every detail of our lives.
“You were there.””
Carol looked at me.
“Yes.””
“At the hospital.””
“Yes.””
My hands shook.
“Why?””
She looked around the room.
Then at Michael’s chair.
“Because Michael knew.””
Thomas stepped forward.
“Knew what?””
Carol looked at him.
“That I was involved.””
Richard closed his eyes.
“You told her?””
Carol looked at him.
“No.””
Richard looked confused.
“Then how?””
Carol smiled faintly.
“Michael was smarter than all of us.””
I felt tears forming.
“My husband knew.””
“Yes.””
“How long?””
“Months.””
The room became heavy.
Carol continued.
“He knew Richard was struggling.””
She looked at Richard.
“He knew David made mistakes.””
She looked at my son.
“And he knew Sarah was being used.””
Sarah looked down.
“Then why didn’t he stop it?””
Carol looked at me.
“Because he wanted to save his family.””
My chest tightened.
That sounded like him.
Even when people hurt him…
He tried to save them.
“But you betrayed him.””
Carol nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Her face changed.
Not anger.
Not greed.
Something worse.
Regret.
“Because I was desperate.””
Everyone said that.
Desperate.
Afraid.
Pressure.
Always an excuse.
But sometimes excuses were just explanations for choices.
“What did you do?”” I asked.
Carol took a breath.
“I helped Mark access information.””
“How much?””
“Enough.””
The word made me sick.
She continued.
“But I didn’t expect Michael to find out.””
Richard laughed bitterly.
“No one expected Michael to find out anything.””
Carol ignored him.
“He confronted me.””
“What did he say?””
She looked at Michael’s chair.
“He said he was disappointed.””
That hurt her more than anger would have.
“He didn’t threaten me.””
She swallowed.
“He didn’t call the police.””
“Why?””
“Because he wanted me to fix it.””
I closed my eyes.
Michael.
Always giving people another chance.
“What happened next?””
Carol looked at me.
“I tried.””
“And?””
“I failed.””
The room was silent.
Then Thomas asked:
“The hospital?””
Carol’s face went pale.
“I didn’t hurt him.””
Nobody answered.
“I swear.””
I wanted to believe her.
But I had learned the cost of believing too quickly.
“Then what happened?””
Carol looked at Richard.
Then David.
Then me.
“Michael found out Mark planned to take everything.””
“What everything?””
“The company. The house. The accounts.””
My heart sank.
“And he planned to stop him.””
“Yes.””
“How?””
Carol whispered:
“He created a final trap.””
Thomas frowned.
“A trap?””
Carol nodded.
“He knew everyone involved would eventually come after the house.””
I looked around.
The bedroom.
The documents.
The trust.
The chaos.
“He planned all of this?””
“No.””
Carol looked at me.
“He planned a way to reveal the truth.””
A silence followed.
Then she reached into her coat pocket.
She pulled out a small envelope.
My heart stopped.
Not another letter.
Not another secret.
She placed it on the table.
“Michael gave this to me the night before he died.””
Everyone froze.
“Why would he give you anything?””
Carol looked at the envelope.
“Because he knew I was the only person who could expose everyone.””
Thomas stepped closer.
“What is inside?””
Carol looked at me.
“Everything.””
My fingers moved toward it.
Then she stopped me.
“There is one thing you should know first.””
I looked up.
“What?””
Her voice trembled.
“Michael didn’t die because of his illness.””
The room went completely silent.
May you like
She whispered:
“Someone helped him get worse.””
